Chapter Forty-Seven
(Easy How?)
Ares POV
"Thought you left." I mutter, tossing a ball in my hand up, and down and repeat.
"I did." Lola mumbles. "You're lucky I went easy."
"Easy how?" I hiss. "You freaking just left, hurt Korri-"
"I meant not killing you. No one would have found your body if I did."
"I'm fine with that." I look at her. "You realize, I would just come back, right?"
"Stupid Divine." She sighs. "I left 'cause... I didn't want to lose my sister again."
"And just think," I snap. "Korri told me the exact same thing a week ago."
"She did?"
"She did."
"Oh." Lola frowns. "I screwed up."
"Yeah. Ya did."
She glares at me. "Shut it."
My mouth snaps shut.
"I got trained while I was MIA." she sighs. "Damn those weeks hurt."
"What do you think it was like for Korri?"
"CAN'T I DO SOMETHING FOR MYSELF FOR ONCE?!"
"I can't help that I had no one to help," I mumble. "And now that I do, I'm.... overdoing it, I guess."
"Somnum." Lola says, and I pass out.
☪
I force myself to get out of bed, ignoring the painful protesting from my leg, and the thick wave of nausea.
"Why did you come back?" I say, leaning on the doorframe for support and glare at Lola.
"I felt Korri go down." She sits on Korri's bed, running her hand over Korri's shoulder. "Don't ask how I knew... I just did." She looks at me. "What did you do?"
"She passed out, I wasn't here when it happened. She just wouldn't wake up." I sigh. "I've been trying to find a cure."
Someone walks up from behind me. "You're not supposed-"
I roll my eyes. "I don't give a damn, Apollo. I'm fine."
"Blood is literally seeping through your jeans."
I wince. I was hoping he wouldn't notice.
Lola frowns skeptically."How did you just-"
"I'm a god, deal with it."
"Wanna gimme a recap?" Lola shivers. "Of everything that happened when I was gone."
And we give her one:
Korri got sick a little after Lola left, with some "future disease", etc.
Lola groans. "For the sake of Ares..."
I give Lola a dirty look. "I'm right here."
"Oh, whoops."
"Yeah."
Our attention shifts to shivering Korri who's mumbling incoherently.
"Korri?"
"No no no no..." she mumbles.
"Well, this means she's waking up." Apollo says. "And I can ditch."
"Great!" I say, embarrassed by my high pitch.
"That's better than 'great', Ares." Lola rolls her eyes.
"For once, I think I agree with you." I laugh, but I stop short.
"Oh," a pale, hazel eyed girl breathes. "It's nice to see you too."
"Korri?"
Tears run down her face, and she bolts.
Apollo and Lola stare. "Wha...?"
"I had nothing to do with this." I say, and run after her.
I wonder how long adrenaline lasts...
