Kaede is the beginning of his family–the origin, the eldest son. He's been made acutely aware of the responsibilities and expectations that his parents instilled in his head from a very young age, he knows what he needs to do, what he needs to achieve, and he's going to do it–and nobody will stop him. His world is very black and white–no color, no greys, no hues, no saturation, his schedule–his regime–is simple. Provide, protect. Kaede's incredibly strict on himself, as most young adults are in the military, failure is not to be taken lightly, failure is not a learning curve, it means to die. He learned this the hard way through losing comrades and friends while he served, because of mistakes–because of failure, he has lost friends. Even when it comes to his studies, he doesn't fail, his education climb is only linear, and he plans to keep it that way.

Kaede holds himself in a high position and only provides his best, which makes his expectations for others unreasonable. He's a strict leader in group projects, taking the reigns for control, and has no problem telling people what to do and how to do it. After all, he can't fail. Still, to be successful, he must find a balance. Sometimes he can come off as overbearing–like a pushy parent or a domineering older brother, but his balance is his charming and persuasive nature. He has his tendency to lose himself in the bossy, dogmatic persona he forged, and so he'll have miniature moments of clarity where he realizes he has to settle down or bring down the stakes for the sake of his comrades' sanity. His face will soften, eyes become distant as if he's wondering–contemplating his next works, you'd expect him to yell or bark orders at you, but on the contrary. He'll settle on a simple, "Good job, I'm sorry." Kaede knows his limits. And more importantly, he knows when to apologize.

Despite his scary looks, Kaede is quite a sweetheart. He has an unwavering love and loyalty to his family, especially his father and younger sister. Ask him to choose between his family and his life and each time he'll choose his family. Tradition and sincerity mean a lot to Kaede, he'll never be caught in a lie (maybe a white lie, but still, he's young, so he's bound to slip now and then). He's that kind of man to have a grumpy–looking expression on his face 24/7, occasionally snapping at people to irk him, only to turn around, all sunshine and smiles to greet his younger sister whenever she pops up. It's sweet. Tender. Like his gentleness is only reserved for the people he loves. And he never fails to show it–affection isn't rare for Kaede, he prefers to be vulnerable and affectionate with people he cares about. It's just that he generally doesn't like judgment. It's hard to pick and choose what sentiment he can openly share without feeling self–conscious.

childhood. ━━ Kaede was a blessed baby–a miracle child. His parents struggled to have a child and after many years of trying, Kaede came along. Kaede's mother was a traditionalist, always reminding Kaede of his duties to protect his family and take over their family business when he was old enough. He was never impressed or intrigued by the family business–working in a luxurious office and rotting away in a chair was never appealing to him. Of course, he didn't say otherwise and only nodded along whenever she'd mention it. Admittedly, he enjoyed his father's presence a lot more than his overbearing mother's. He'd spent more than enough time with him–he was just a calmer, laid–back spirit. It's not that he disliked his mother's company, it just felt overwhelming during times. Even during dinner time, he was expected to have a straight spine and to have his chin tilted at a certain angle that was pleasing to his mother's eyes. He loved her, yes, but he couldn't remember the last time she gave him a two-arm hug. School was lonely for Kaede. Learning came easy to him, but socializing, making friends, talking to kids his age–it was so new to him as an awkward child. Kaede met Akemi after she moved out into the city and she really helped him come out of his shell. He wasn't so awkward or hesitant to have fun anymore despite feeling guilty about disobeying his mother. Games of tag and hide and seek never felt more alive to him back then.
coming of age. ━━ Kaede's younger sister was born when he was ten years old and he initially anticipated his mother to raise her similarly to how he was raised. He was wrong. Seeing his mother become so tender and loving with Naomi was a hard sight to watch, and while he understood it wasn't Naomi's fault, he still had a hard time bonding with her. To distract himself, Kaede picked up boxing with Akemi. Over time, Kaede would stop talking to his mother as much and would instead spend most of his time with his father. Life seemed to pass by quickly because before he knew it, Akemi and Kaede had begun to drift away socially. He didn't mean to necessarily abandon her, life was just so busy with a new little sister. He felt that maybe it was for the best that he and Akemi wouldn't be friends anymore anyway, they would be going to different Schools very soon. It was bound to happen. Not long after the two's friendship had split, Kaede met Kozue–a cute classmate who grew close with Kaede fairly quickly. The two started to date when Kaede was around fifteen years old and stayed together nearly the entirety of High School–the feeling he had with Kozue was confusing. Sure, she was cute and funny and the perfect girlfriend, but something was missing and he didn't know what. Kaede forgot all about Akemi with Kozue–maybe that was the problem.
adulthood. ━━ When Kaede was to graduate that year he turned eighteen, his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Devastated, Kaede refused to go to University and begged to stay by his side. At the time, the military had caught his eye–if he joined, they would offer him the proper healthcare and benefits to help his father since the only treatment they could afford wasn't helping. After subsequently breaking Kozue's heart by breaking up with her, he hastily joined the military when he was nineteen and left when he was twenty-one and injured. On duty, he had injured his hand and due to his nerves being damaged, he had to lose the entirety of his hand. When he came home, he felt like an utter disappointment–handless, jobless, marriage–less, he couldn't save his father. With what little dignity he had left, Kaede went to University for Psychiatry, and maybe it was out of pity, or maybe it was a tiny drop of affection that Kaede's mother offered him, but she decided to help him out by paying for a temporary hand replacement until he graduated University. His father was deteriorating rapidly at this point. During this time, he became relatively close with his younger sister since she was now feeling her mother's cold shoulder every now and then. She turned to Kaede for comfort and despite being unfamiliar with affection from the feminine parts of his family, he did his best as an older brother. Kaede was scouted not long into his studies at University and he excitedly joined the Student Piloting Program in hopes of finally getting his father the help he needed. Discovering that Akemi was there, it wasn't hard for him to approach her–it was a comfort seeing a familiar face.
