Hospitals were boring. There was no denying that. Even with all of the drama leaching through the halls and the traumas going in and out of the surgical floor... there was still plenty of boredom to go around.
So between her school work and medical testings, Aurora Doe had to find an interest. Something to fill her boredom in between the shifts of her favourite interns. She tried a few activities like colouring but she quit that out of spite.
Aurora once spent a good two days working on this massively detailed drawing, but accidentally messed it up when she suddenly coded. The drawing was messed up and her anger never wavered. Practically refusing to draw out of spite.
Another thing she tried was knitting, but her doctors didn't really like the idea of sharp objects around her. As she may or may not have threatened to use a knitting needle on another patient before. Though it couldn't be proven.
But that's when she was introduced to bracelets making. At first she just tried it because her lawyer was in the hospital getting her stomach pumped and wanted to surprise her. Though the weirdest thing happened... when she smiled and put it on, Aurora felt something strange. She wasn't sure what it was but she rather liked it as she never felt that way before.
And she wanted to experience it again, so she started making more. And more. And more.
After that it became somewhat of a custom on the Pediatric Ward. Doctors and nurses wore the colour coded bracelets determining either their rank or rather personality. Then when she ran out of staff to make the friendship bracelets for, she moved onto patients. Making small beaded necklaces, bracelets and rings for the parents and children for fun.
So as Aurora started to prepare her latest gift she couldn't help but notice Doctor Grey coming in with a rather large smile on her face, which made Aurora's brow raise, "Good morning, Aurora!"
The tween watched the woman smiling ear to ear as she placed a basket of muffins on her end table, "Happy Monday."
Aurora looked between her doctor and the muffins, "Morning?"
"Hope you don't mind, I brought you a little something. Hope you like blueberry cream cheese muffins," her voice was airy, cheerful, wrong. "Freshly baked!"
Still not wanting to pass up the chance of eating something other than hospital food she picked one up, "Is this a bribe? You can't bribe me into requesting you for my transplant, Doctor Grey."
"No bribe. Just thought you'd like them," she smiled.
Before Aurora could press her call button, under the assumption the intern stole some morphine, Doctor Yang came, "Doctor Grey didn't make them, she can't even make bread and butter. They're not poisoned," the intern quickly checked her chart. "And she's giving them away to anyone so don't worry. You aren't special."
"Why's she so happy?" She glanced at the other doctor.
"Doctor Grey is currently dating two men at the same time."
Aurora gasped in excitement as Grey's smile dropped, "You can do that and not be ashamed?!"
"Christina! You can't tell her that. She's a patient. A Peds patient."
"So what? We've been stuck with her all week and she's gonna hear it anyway. Might as well hear it from the source," Yang shrugged and continued to write.
Aurora nodded, "She's got a point. I trade bracelets for information on what's going on here. I'm like... I'm like the master of whispers in Seattle Grace."
Doctor Grey couldn't help but let out a small scoff, "I think that's a little bit of an exaggeration, Miss Doe."
The blonde looked between the before humming, "Pick me. Choose me. Love me." She grabbed her bottle of water and took a small sip.
The two interns stared at one another before it seemed as if the doctors realized that Aurora Doe wasn't one who took gossip lightly. So seeing as they had been forced to keep tabs on her until the mythical heart transplant could occur, Grey let out a sigh.
Placing the files on the bed Doctor Grey grabbed a muffin and peeled back the foil, "I'm currently dating two doctors-"
"One's a vet."
"Same difference," she took a bite of her breakfast. Holding out her finger to stop Aurora's question before she could even ask, "And no. It's not cheating as none of us are exclusive."
"Both came to surprise her moments ago," Yang's words made Aurora gasp in excitement.
Though Doctor Grey only playfully rolled her eyes as her blissful mode came back, "It's fun. Dating is fun. You get fun stuff."
With a hum Aurora grabbed a muffin and sank her teeth into it. The fluffy but firm dough satisfyingly squished between her teeth, "Oh my god," A soft moan came from her lips as she wiped the blueberry from her cheek, "This is amazing. You made these, Doctor Yang?"
Doctor Grey started to laugh as Yang's brows lowered, "Oh god can you imagine? No, they were made by Doctor Stevens. She was on a... sabbatical but you'll meet her soon."
Suddenly Doctor Yang stopped writing and glanced at her friend, "Um... Doctor Grey, can I speak with you for a moment?"
Grey gave a small nod as her friend practically dragged her out of the room, "We'll be back to check on you later. Don't leave your room again," she demanded the child before pulling Grey towards the nurses station. "Are you out of your mind?"
"What?" Grey was able to pull her arm away from her best friend.
"Telling her about Izzie? Are you out of your mind? There is no way they'd let anyone, especially a kid with a condition like that, near her."
"I don't see what the problem is," Meredith Grey grabbed her breakfast and coffee she received from her two lovers.
Christina Yang actually gawked, "What the problem is? Mer. Do you not remember the last time Izzie was around a patient with Cardiomyopathy?"
Grey watched as her friend proceeded to mime herself cutting an invisible string, "LVAD. Snip, snip," Yang then gestured to the room the tween was in. "Our punishment for helping."
Grey only playfully rolled her eyes and took a sip of her drink Derek Shepherd had given her. All while her friend continued to grumble as she pulled out Grey's coffee cake.
"Izzie's back, that's good," their fellow intern Karev joined them. "Ooh, coffee cake."
"I'm dating," Meredith said as Cristina grabbed Alex by the arm. "Touch that piece, lose a hand."

As Alex Karev tried his best to head to lunch after a very strange day with a patient, he was suddenly stopped by his boss. With a sigh he looked down at the shorter woman, basically sulking, "I'm just trying to get some lunch."
"Uh-huh. You know the rules. It's your turn," she pointed to the Doe's room.
The man child let out an exaggerated sigh, "Oh come on, Bailey. Yang and Grey are better at it than me. I'm not a Peds nurse."
"No, but you helped cover up a stolen heart escaped," the woman crossed her arms with a small shrug. "You all have babysitting duty... if you are a fan of working here, that is."
The man's brows lowered as he continued to try and find a way out of it, "I don't think she'd enjoy a male intern just hanging out in her room, Doctor Bailey."
As the two begun a rather tense stare down, the resident gave a hum before calling out to the room near them, "Miss Doe?"
They could both hear a huff from inside, "Oh, come on! I haven't left my bed all day. What could I have possibly done now?!"
"Nothing, just wondering if you wanted to join Doctor Karev out in the cafeteria for lunch for a change today," she asked with a smirk. Not breaking eye contact with her intern as they could both hear the tween gasp in excitement.
A chance out of her room? Aurora was already packing up her craft supplies before she could even finish the sentence. Excited to leave her bedroom for once (with permission that is), "Obviously!" She laughed back.
Bailey continued to smirk at her intern as she started to walk away, "Better grab that wheelchair, Karev. She shouldn't be walking around."
The next thing the teen knew she was told to get in the wheelchair and had to listen to her doctor grumbling the entire way to the cafeteria, getting her food (making Karev pay for it) and all the way towards a table where Doctor Yang sat alone.
"Where's your other half?" Karev sat down.
The woman chuckled, too involved in the situation before her to notice Karev's friend, "Meredith's date just arrived and god he is overdoing it. I mean who the hell eats hospital food on purpose?"
Aurora's doctor glanced over towards the table a few feet ahead of theirs. Seeing Meredith Grey happily eating lunch with a pretty blonde looking boy.
The tween looked him up and down and couldn't help but notice he still had this look in his eye. Almost as if he was... well rested. Something people inside Seattle Grace usually didn't possess. Especially in the surgical staff.
"So that's the vet?" Aurora couldn't help but chuckle, pointing to the man in the distance.
Suddenly the woman a seat away finally looked over at her fellow seat mates, noticing the child, "Do I even wanna know?"
"Doctor Bailey said we need to take turns watching her," Alex started to eat.
"Yeah? And you couldn't just stay in her room?" Yang looked at him. "That's what I did yesterday. Just give her something and she'll keep quiet."
The patient nodded as she continued to eat, "Doctor Yang gave me a fifty and told me not to talk so she could study."
The words alone made the man gawk, "You had cash? You had cash this entire time?"
Both girls mockingly chuckled at Karev as Aurora pulled out her small ducktape wallet she constructed and pulled out five crisp ten dollar bills, "I love it when Doctor Yang babysits me."
"You made me pay for your lunch."
"And I thank you for that," she happily sipped her diet soda before glancing back at her giggling doctor getting charmed by a vet. Her lips started to curl as she looked back at her glorified babysitters, "You wanna try and win some of it back?"
The pair glanced at each other before back to her, "Go on?"
Aurora used her head to gesture to Doctor Grey, "Doctor Doe-Eyes over there is getting charmed by the vet, but from what I've heard the head of neuro is trying to get to her. How long till he comes and whisks her away?"
Within seconds Yang had pulled out a few crumpled bills and placed them on the table, "Fifty bucks says Shepherd comes and sits with them."
Karev let out a small scoff, "Seriously? You're partaking in this with her?"
The woman shrugged, "Miss. Doe is practically a plant we have to watch so she doesn't end up wilting away in her room. We might as well have some fun and make some money out of it."
The tween raised her cup, "See? This is why Doctor Yang is my favourite at the moment. She treats me like everyone should."
"A menace to society?"
"Yes, Yang. Sure."
So seeing as Karev was rather broke and bored he gave into the temptations and pulled out a matching amount of cash, "Fifty that Shepherd doesn't do anything. Like a gentleman."
"Gentleman my ass," the girl mumbled before putting her money on the table. "Fifty that Shepherd finds an excuse to steal her away. Like a winner does."
The three started to watch the date intensely from the sidelines as another body joined their table. Doctor Geogre O'Malley sat down in a daze. As if he had just heard some earth shattering news, something the tween was all too familiar with, "Callie just called my house home," okay, she's never had that happen before. "Where does she get that?"
The man was quickly shushed but he continued on talking, "It is not her home!" He cried out before noticing the massive pile of cash on the table. "What are you doing?"
"Meredith and Finn," Karev pointed to them.
George started at the pot and counted it out before turning to the patient, not even bothering to ask why she was there, "Aurora, you're in this too?"
"I want new beads. The ones the hospital provides don't have enough pizzazz."
George nodded and pulled out some bills from his pocket, "Oh, can I be in the..." he quickly counted his money. "With five?"
The trio shook their heads, "That's not a bet that's milk money, dude-" Alex's taunting was quickly cut off as Meredith started to laugh.
Christina let out a scoff, "Oh and she's laughing! Because he made a joke, which probably wasn't funny. Hahaha! Oh you funny vet!"
George only frowned, "I left the rest of my cash at home. Which I can call it because I live there, I'm not a visitor."
As he continued to sulk, Alex placed his drink down and turned his attention to the other man, "Hey, you're a loser. You like comic books, right?"
George O'Malley's brows lowered, "No," he made sure neither girl was paying attention before mouthing yes.
"I got this kid, this patient. She thinks she's a superhero. What's up with that?" He asked.
"Superhero? Superheroes look like anyone, like you or me," he explained.
"Is your patient an orphan?" Aurora asked. "Usually superheroes are orphans. Only instead of powers I got heart disease and asthma," she muttered in the last part.
Alex actually nodded, "Yeah. Yeah, she's got a foster family but is convinced she doesn't have the ability to feel pain."
"Sounds like a tumour to me," Aurora whispered as the two continued to speak.
"Maybe they're not someone that people necessarily notice as extraordinary. Maybe in their daily life they get walked on. But then... there's a moment, they get hit by a cosmic ray or bitten by a radioactive spider and then suddenly, something that has been inside them all this time, lying dormant, comes raging out-"
Alex groaned, annoyed, "Dude, forget I asked-"
"Oh here we go!" Yang quickly gripped the boy's shoulders between her. "Here we go. Okay!"
The four went completely still as Doctor Derek Shepherd walked into the cafeteria. Going complete past Meredith and Finn's table, making his way over to the stall and grabbing a coffee, "Come on, come one, come on."
Derek then proceeded to walk away and not even giving the woman he was fighting for a second glance. Making Alex laugh in triumph, "Takes it like a man, and walks away."
Aurora let out an angered groan as her doctor started to gather up his winnings. Or at least that's what he was doing before Geogre stopped him, "He's coming back."
Christina chuckled, "Oh yes he is! Now just sit down... sit down and be awkward, Shepherd. Be awkward."
Both girls shut the men up as they watched Derek chat with them for a moment before Meredith stood up. Causing Yang to gasp, "No. No! Mer sit your ass back down!"
Doctor Grey did not in fact sit her ass back down and started to walk away with the other man. Making the tween cackle in delight, "Stole her away. What did I say?"
Both her doctors grumbled under their breaths as they no so happily handed over Aurora's winnings. Not that her taunting made it any easier.
"You know Doe... I don't think I like you that much," Yang grumbled.
Though she only shrugged in delight, "Doesn't matter. You're all stuck with me till I get a heart or die," she proudly handed Karev back a twenty. "Now be a doll and grab me, Doctor Yang and O'Malley some pudding. And... keep the change. Get yourself something nice."
Life was still going short but definitely sweet. Sweet like victory.
