Life was short. No matter how hard people want to try and gaslight themselves into believing existence was forever... life was short. Very short.

Though unlike most, Aurora Doe had come to terms with the facts. Her life was going to be short. Shorter than most that is. Her doctors had always taken to scolding or lying to her saying, "You can't think that way. You must stay positive." But that was Aurora being positive.

She wasn't upset by the fact. She embraced it. Death was inevitable for everyone and the blonde happened to have many close encounters. Hell, the Grim Reaper had tried to steal her seconds after she was born. Life is what it is. So having a variety of complications and diseases didn't really bother her anymore. She can't control it so she just rolled with it.

As Aurora licked frosting from her fingers she couldn't help but hear a faint sound of sniffling. Not an uncommon occurrence inside the Seattle Grace Hospital, but when she saw the woman stop in front of the bulletin board she couldn't help become intrigued. Watching from the safety of her bed as the redheaded wreck of a woman pulled out a pair of black underwear and pinned them to the wall.

The twelve year old's mouth went into an O shape as she watched the lady leave the floor. Seeing the laced panties happily stuck to the board.

When you live in a hospital full time you needed to find ways to keep yourself entertained. Another reason Aurora was so joyful inside her home was because there was always something going on. LAVDS were being cut, interns were sleeping with their bosses, (their married bosses), and the occasional bomb.

So when Aurora saw that no one had noticed the panties on the bulletin board she happily sat back in her bed. Chowing down on the rather large piece of cake one of the patients on her floor had sent her. Waiting for shit to hit the fan.

A little while later her newest resident and gaggle of interns walked into her room, "Good morning Doctor Bailey, let me be the first to say you look positively glowing. Motherhood should be taking notes on you."

Her newest resident, Doctor Bailey, may have been short in stature, but her strong attitude made the darker skinned women taller than a skyscraper. The woman walked in with a small smirk, "Mmhum. Thank you Miss. Doe, but you're not getting your television privileges back."

Aurora's fake smile flatted as she discarded her faux childlike smile, "Fine."

The young tween turned her attention towards the interns she was now stuck with, counting four heads. Four rather jumpy interns, babies, in clean scrubs. Only after a quick glance over she was easily able to recognize them. Her lips started to curl into a sudden smirk as she tried not to squeal in excitement. Four out of five of the most dramatic interns Grace Memorial had ever seen were in her room. Reading her charts.

The famous interns. Meredith, Alex, Gegore, Izzie and Christina. Magic as Aurora liked to refer to them as. And oh... oh, how magically entertaining they were.

Bailey pointed to the black haired girl, who Aurora was easily able to recognize as Christina Yang, started to speak, "Aurora Doe, twelve years old. Has Cardiomyopathy, meaning her heart has a harder time pumping blood to the rest of the body, and is currently on the transplant list for a new one."

Doctor Christina Yang. The emotionless surgeon who was planning on specializing in cardiology. A rather rude woman but was very close to Aurora's own surgeon Doctor Burke. Well... Aurora's old surgeon as Burke has been shot and was now hospitalized as well. Though he might have been completely fine as Aurora overheard that the two doctors got caught having a little fun by his parents that morning.

Aurora nodded along with Christina before adding, "Don't forget about all the tumours removed over the years, the asthma and... oh! How could I forget!" the blonde raises her arm slightly to show off her cast. "The recently broken wrist."

"A wrist that wouldn't have been broken if someone stayed in their bed when told to," her doctor had scolded her.

The tween only rolled her eyes, "It wasn't that big of a deal. So I fell down a flight of stairs. It happens. He did it," all eyes followed the patient's finger as she pointed at Doctor O'Malley.

The brunette looked up from his papers and stared at her. Watching as his face went slightly red, "What?"

Doctor George O'Malley. Double O'7 as others called him. The most meek looking of the group, but in Aurora's opinion the most emotional. Of course all five of the interns were rather train wrecks, but from what she had gathered George was the worst and no one ever talked about it. Her personal favourite story was how helplessly in love he once was with his roommate Merideth Grey, and getting angry when she cried during sex. Shit happens but he stomped through the halls for a good few weeks after that.

The girl only shrugged, "The nurses talk. They talk a lot."

"I'm not seeing any surgeries scheduled for another month or so," Aurora watched as the taller man, Alex she believed his name was, flipped through the massive book of files on her. "Why isn't she up in Peds?"

Alex Karev. The asshole pretty boy. Tall and rather good looking but a slut from what the nurses said. Aurora had seen him pinning after nurses once in a while, but the wannabe Plastic Surgeon was so obviously infatuated with the infamous Izzie Stevens it was laughable.

"Great question," Bailey turned her attention back to the smirking child. "Miss. Doe here has found herself seemingly kicked out of the Pediatric Wing of the Hospital."

"They kicked her off of the floor?" The final intern in the room, the legacy Meredith Grey stared at her resident.

Meredith was the one that Aurora actually felt slightly bad for. Which never happened as she believed pity was a waste of time. Not only did the doctor have to deal with the pressure of being as good as her two time winner of the Harper Avery award mother, but as well as being labelled an Adulteress Whore. Which wasn't truly fair as she wasn't aware her boyfriend was even married.

"Turns out parents don't like other kids teaching their own about death. Which in my opinion is rather stupid as we're all sick here," Aurora hummed as she continued to eat her slice of cake.

Doctor Bailey turned to her interns with a small smirk, "Many parents threatened to leave if she stayed up there and our lawyers don't believe it's in her best interest to be sent to another hospital so we had to move her."

The sick girl blew a small raspberry, "Oh come on Bailey, you don't have to lie around me," Aurora chuckled and looked at her new source of entertainment. "I'm the Garden Patient, you've heard about."

She watched as each of the interns' eyes started to widen as they tried to hide their excitement or confusion. The Garden. A cruel nickname that the medical workers referred to her as, that Aurora actually found rather humorous. A nickname referring to how no matter how many times they tried to save her, another disease or tumour or complication would sprout out like a flower. Always growing new diseases to be studied and cut open.

She was a lush growing garden. They were the landscapers excited to start working.

And with her being a ward of the state, the government was forced to pay for it all. Putting many silver coins in the landscaper's pocket. They couldn't just get rid of that cash cow.

"Oh my god..." Yang excitedly whispered as her friend Grey had elbowed her to shut up.

Bailey sent them each a glare before looking back at the girl, "You know not to call yourself that and the interns are not to refer. To. You. By. That. Either."

The resident's glare alone made the group all quickly nod and agree with her, "Yes, of course."

"No. Never."

"Wouldn't dream of it."

"She's more of a sunflower than a whole damn garden."

Bailey looked at them rather unconvinced, "Muhm. Either way you all better get used to seeing Miss. Doe. A lot. Starting today."

Yang raised her brow, "I'm sorry what?"

If ethics weren't involved, Miranda Bailey would have been laughing her ass off at her interns at that moment. Aurora knew that, so she slightly chuckled as the resident told them the good news.

"As you know when a person has major surgeries they'll need a support team, and since Miss Doe here isn't allowed in the Paediatric ward that responsibility will now fall onto you four," the faces of Magic all fell at the statement.

"I'm sorry, what?" Alex stepped forward, unsure if he heard her correctly.

"You think you're all in the clear for the Duquette incident? Ha!" Bailey looked them over, "Lost a heart, save a heart. You will become Aurora's support system until we find her a new heart."

Aurora smiled, "Once I have a new heart my social workers believe I'll have a better chance finding a foster home," which was nothing but a hopeful lie the teen told herself.

Since she was sooo sick It was hard to find some potential parents to take her in. Not that she could blame them. They said adoption was expensive but when you were a garden of problems it could add up immensely. There was a reason her last name was Doe after all.

Bailey placed a hand on the teen's shoulder, happily telling her interns their newest job, "You are responsible for Aurora and her treatment. Running her labs, making sure she eats and checking up on her. Keep her and yourselves out of trouble."

"Oh, cage match. This'll be fun," the girl snickered as the others looked rather scared to question their resident as Bailey squeezed the rambunctious teen's shoulder, "They'll be back to check up on you. Any caught slacking you have the nurses page me."

"Yes, ma'am," she saluted the resident as they began to leave her room.

"I want you to each visit her once a day. This isn't a punishment. It's more of a test," Miranda explained to them. "That girls got nothing and no one and you all need to brush up on your bedside manner."

"Seems like stuff a nurse should do," Alex huffed as he dramatically closed the teen's large file.

"A nurse can't scrub in on a heart transplant."

The four looked at each other before moving closer to their superior, "And if we do well we can scrub in on a surgery?" Christina asked.

Miranda nodded as they left the room, "When it comes time, we shall see. Until then keep her out of trouble."

"Good thing I love kids. They are just the best. Love them. Just... just love them," Yang lied through her teeth.

Though Bailey could see right through it, "Okay. Okay. It's going to be a while until the heart comes so enough with the kiss-assary," she placed some files down on the nurses desk. "I'm proud of you all. You make me proud. This is a way to show yourselves off. You reflect on me well. Try to keep this cardio patient alive."

They all nodded as she gave out their daily assignments, "Grey, if you think you can keep you clothes on long enough to follow up the labs, I'd appreciate it. Karev, cover in the pit."

Alex looked at her strangely, "T-The pit? Wait, I'm off Gynie squad?"

"Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd is out sick today You can cover the pit where you can..." Bailey paused as she stared at the bulletin board.

From inside her room Aurora had to hold back a laugh as someone finally noticed the underwear someone pinned up, "You can tell me who's damn panties are on the bulletin board?!"

Suddenly the entire floor stopped what they were doing in order to stare at the black laced thong pinned up. Aurora, excited for the oncoming scolding, hobbled out of her bed to get a better view. Noticing Doctor Grey's blush as Yang whispered something to her.

"This is a hospital, people. Serious work happens here. We save lives here!"

Aurora made it to the door and watched as all the medical workers stayed frozen with giggles or shock as Bailey continued to scold everyone, "Oh, is something funny? Whose are these?

"This is bad. This isn't good."

"Well you'd better claim them. She thinks they're mine. Claim them." Aurora could hear Grey and Yang whispering back and forth.

"No."

Bailey stepped closer towards the two women, "Yeah, I know it's one of you. It's always one of mine. Always. So, tell me. Which one of you left your damn drawers on my surgical floor?"

And suddenly, as if the gods wanted Aurora to have an even better day for a change, another doctor, Doctor Torres, came forward to collect the underwear, "Oh no, did I leave my underwear lying around again? I'm so sorry Bailey. It's my bad."

Leaving everyone to watch with slacked jaws as the dark haired woman plucked them off of the bulletin board and walked away.

The only sound that followed was a fit of laughter from Aurora's room as she giggled. The group looked at the sick girl as she crossed her arms, "Let me just say... seeing this shit happen in person is way more fun than hearing it from nurses."

"Doe, get your butt back in bed before I put those restraints on you. So help me I will."

With a laugh Aurora walked back into her room and went back into bed. Spending almost a year in Peds was one thing, but the surgical floor was a completely new experience.

Ohhh, how life was going to be sweet down here.
