❛ miss seeing you ❜

With the graduation ceremony coming soon, (a couple days away) mikayla and chris have been spending almost every day together. they'll spend time at each other's houses, or they'll go out without the rest of their friends, treasuring their last couple of moments together and alone. when they're with the rest of their friends, it doesn't feel the same; they still have a good time but it just doesn't.
however, that doesn't mean that the friend group are going to spend any less time together which is why they're all at the sturniolo's home, spread out.
mikayla, maria, matt and chris are all in the kitchen while the others are in the living room having a dance party to kesha's songs. the boys are just happy that they're finishing high school, an overpowering feeling of joy taking over their bodies. but it just won't be the same without them. them going to college will just leave lucille, maria and mikayla. they still have each other but that doesn't mean they're not going to miss listening to mason's corny jokes, nick's loud complaining, matt's consistent attitude, chris' stupid comments and nate's constant worrying.
free periods and lunch in the cafeteria won't be the same whatsoever but that's just something they'll have to get used to. sure it'll take a while, but they all promised each other that the friend group won't ever split up. especially with matt and maria dating and chris and mikayla being closer than ever.
so this is the exact reason why they're all living their lives to the most that they can, even if that means having childish dance parties and baking in the kitchen—exactly what matt, maria, mikayla and chris are doing right now.
"okay so...we clearly missed a step," mikayla mumbles, her voice laced with disappointment. her hands rest on her hips while chris stands behind her, his hands on her shoulders and she looks down at the cake that hasn't risen at all. miks hastily grabs the box, thoroughly rereading the instructions at the back of it.
"yeah, ya think?" matt tuts, his voice full of sarcasm—such a repetitive tone he always seems to use. he rolls his eyes and frustratedly huffs before walking to the kitchen island and taking a seat in the stool.
maria can't help but laugh at his attitude, following where he is. she stands behind him, resting the side of her head on his back and wrapping her arms around his body. "it's okay, you can't help it that you suck at baking," she teases him and he instantly rolls his eyes again.
"damn," mikayla breathes out, turning around and using her hands now resting on the kitchen counter to sit on it. her legs swing in the air as chris shuffles to stand in front of her. he places his hands on her thighs, a grin on his face. "don't look at me like that," miks whispers while a maroon tint spreads across her cheeks.
chris tilts his head, a smirk on his face and a crease between his eyebrows. "why not?" chris questions, his voice quiet.
"we're literally right here. oh my god," matt says from behind, his top lip lifted into a sneer. his face scrunches up in disgust, not at the sight of mikayla and chris, but because he definitely doesn't want to witness them kissing. "like what the fuck?" he throws his hands in the air.
"you're just mad because you haven't been able to spend time with maria," chris shoots back a harsh reply, referring to how maria's parents didn't let her leave the house for a couple weeks due to her coming home late from a party. chris clicks his fingers and points to where the door is.
matt harshly pushes the chair out from the kitchen island, flipping his brother off before leaving the room with maria and mikayla swears that she heard him mutter a 'fuck you' under his breath, making her laugh. but now they're left alone again, a familiar setting she's been getting used to for a while.
mikayla wraps her arms around chris' neck, tugging at his brunette waves. she plays with his hair, twirling it around her fingertips before letting go of it completely. miks watches as chris frowns slightly, probably because he enjoys it when she plays with his hair.
"what'd you wanna do for your graduation?" mikayla finally asks since the questions been nagging her for weeks. she wants to do something special for chris after everything he's done for her recently, especially that aquarium date she hasn't forgotten about. "like, a fancy breakfast or some shit like that."
chris just shrugs, his thumb rubbing mikayla's bare thigh due to the shorts she's wearing. "i don't really care, there's that big grad party after so..." he trails off and mikayla groans at the thought of another party, especially one that she'll feel so out of place in since she isn't even graduating this year.
"fuck that, we can go to, like—a cute breakfast place before the ceremony," mikayla suggests and chris approvingly nods his head at the idea. "then..." she pauses, tilting her head as her eyes flicker from his lips then back to his eyes. "you get your diploma, then boom."
"boom?" chris repeats through a chuckle, his eyebrows furrowing. "never heard that one before. but yeah, breakfast is cool," he smiles before placing a soft kiss on mikayla's lips.
"—DISGUSTING," someone yells out from the doorway and they both know who it is without looking. their attention shifts to where the voice came from and nick's standing there, his arms folded with nate, a grimace on his face. they're both slightly out of breath from their multiple rounds of just dance. "of course, i come here to get a water and i have to witness something so—"
"incestual?" nate intentionally cuts him off, not being serious but he'll never give up the opportunity to bring up the fact that chris used to refer to mikayla as his little sister. however, he seems to be taking all of this better than expected, especially since they came out as boyfriend and girlfriend. but all he wants is mikayla to be happy and if that's with chris, then so be it.
nick's head quickly turns to face nate next to him, his face scrunched up as he raises his hand in the air. "well—uh...i wasn't gonna say that..." he awkwardly chuckles before strolling towards the fridge. nick narrows his eyes at chris before his gaze falls to the failed attempt at baking a cake next to mikayla's thigh. nick laughs, so loud and chris rolls his eyes. "sorry, that's just the worst fucking cake i've ever seen. even trevor can do better than that."
suddenly, the sound of little footsteps on the ground find their way to where nick's standing. it's as if the mention of trevor's name summoned him here as he sits at nick's feet, wagging his tail.
"hey trev," nick greets his dog, crouching slightly to pet the furry animal before he straightens his posture. trevor jumps slightly, resting his front two paws on nick's leg while he wags his tail even quicker. "are you guys gonna keep doing whatever this is," his free hand gestures between chris and mikayla, "or play just dance with us."
"just dance, duh," mikayla quickly responds, a childish grin on her face since nothing can beat just dance in her opinion. she gives chris a quick peck on the cheek before hopping off the counter—with his help—and taking his hand in her own so they can walk into the living room together.
Mikayla and chris sit in his favorite spot on top of the beige shipping container, a beautiful view of the sky. they watch the sky melt as the sun prepares to tuck itself away for the rest of the day. with graduation leering over chris' shoulder, he suggested that they should revisit this spot again.
mikayla sits cross legged, a joint loosely hanging between her lips as she attempts to draw chris. she's never been much of a show off when it comes to her skills, but she's pretty good at art even if she doesn't mention it everyday. she tilts her head, narrowing her eyes with a pencil between in her hand.
chris' legs hang off the container and he pulls his backwards cap back slightly, trying not to mess up his brunette waves. he's attempting to stay still so that mikayla can draw him, but of course, he isn't.
"fuck chris, stay still," mikayla quietly complains, followed by a groan. she places the pencil to rest on her ear before taking the joint between her fingertips. she takes a quick drag, inhaling and passing it to chris. they've been at this spot for a while and mikayla's pretty much given up with drawing him, just wanting chris to have something to remember her by.
chris gratefully takes the j, placing it between his lips. "my bad, miks," he hums, a grin tugging at the corner of his lips. "you'll have time to draw me before i go to college."
college. of course mikayla's glad that chris is making something of himself, proud of how far he's come ever since they were kids. however, she'd be lying if she said she won't miss him at all. miks definitely will, she'll miss him immensely and a long distance relationship is not what she had planned for this year. but she's happy for chris and the opportunity he's gained with receiving a lacrosse scholarship.
"don't look so sad," chris mumbles, teasing miks and stopping her train of continuing thoughts. he tilts his head, placing the j in the ashtray. "you'll be able to visit me, you know that?"
"yeah..." mikayla trails off, the frown on her face slowly disappearing. she places the paper and pencil next to her, now shuffling towards chris. "i'm just gonna miss seeing you in school," she rests her head on his comfortable shoulder.
moments later, mikayla slowly lifts her head up, locking eyes with chris; she'll never lose the butterflies that flutter in her stomach whenever they make eye contact and how easily chris manages to maintain it. she leans towards him, placing her lips on his own. mikayla's really going to miss him, not knowing what to do with herself. however, she'll just have to try and manage everything including her overbearing feelings towards him.
it'll take time, but mikayla will learn how to eventually, no matter how hard it may be.
