IRL ! ; valentine's pov
'NEPENTHE' IS ANOTHER word that valentine discovered today, her gaze gluing to the noun that stood out on the page compared to the other words. it means something that can make you forget grief or suffering, and that's exactly what valentine feels like she is to chris.
the gym is filled to the brim with blackmore college students and valentine lennox honestly feels like she's a fish trapped in a sardine can. it's one thing to sit in the bleachers surrounded by people she strongly dislikes, but it's another thing to be sat in a memorial assembly for a death that valentine is fully responsible for.
her headphones comfortably cover her ears as she blasts lana del rey, attempting to drown out the noise of genevieve preparing to deliver a speech and for some reason, the blonde decided to change into an all black outfit—a black knee length dress with white floral accents, some heels and a head accessory that makes her look ridiculous. 'so dramatic', valentine thinks to herself, followed by an eye roll.
but then again, valentine's somewhat grateful for this waste of time because luckily fate pu chris next to her, yet again. he leans back slightly with folded arms and his legs slightly spread looking more perfect than ever. of course valentine has to sneak a couple glances at him because she would be totally st if she didn't.
val's gaze finds its way to chris at the most random times, giving her different opportunities to stare at him. he's beautiful—the way his brunette waves messily cover his forehead, that stubble that val hopes he doesn't shave off anytime soon, the jewelry that perfectly makes his eyes pop. the attraction valentine has towards chris is sickening because whenever their eyes connect, there's a feeling of nausea bubbling in her gut that makes her feel sick.
she wonders if chris feels the same, or at least sharing some partly similar feelings that maybe he's just better at hiding. val gathered that chris was a very loving boyfriend towards mars and she's curious if he'd act like that with her. the possibility may seem crazy but anything can happen, especially with mars mayfield no longer in her way.
a dimpled smile grows on valentine's face as a train of thoughts about a romantic future with chris play in her mind: walks on the beach, cute picnics with food that she made for him, dinner dates and much more.
genevieve taps the microphone multiple times while clearing her throat to shift the attention to her, as always so valentine pauses her music, curious as to what she has to say.
"thank you for that moment of silence," genevieve mutters with a forced smile but everybody can see right through her. she smiles slightly before the corner of her mouth curve downwards. "we all knew mars, not just as mr mayfield's daughter, but as somebody with a smile that lit up the whole room." her voice cracks slightly as if she's about to break down and start crying which humors valentine.
val looks at chris, narrowing her eyes slightly at the expression plastered across her face. she can't really understand how he's feeling at this moment, but she can use her brain and she assumes he's still upset. say what you want and call valentine crazy or whatever, but she expected chris to be over it by now. then again, if val lost chris in any sort of way, she's not sure what she would do.
"mars mayfield was a wonderful person, whether it's the way she carried herself or spoke to people, she was loved by all of us," genevieve continues, lying straight through her teeth and chris just scoffs quietly as a response. "she was beautiful, and many of us were lucky enough to know her," a coy smile appears on genevieve's face but the only thing val is thinking of is how long until this whole thing is over.
all valentine wants to do is go back to her dorm and spend the rest of her day scouring the internet for anything that chris has posted recently. of course she checked her instagram feed as soon as she woke up, but the only thing val was greeted with was a dozen memorial posts for mars.
surprisingly chris didn't post anything (he still hasn't) and valentine wonders if it's because of her. she silently questions if chris feels the same way towards her, just manifesting that the romantic feelings are reciprocated.
"mars didn't deserve what happened to her, and we all know that," 'she definitely did,' valentine thinks to herself, stifling quiet laughter. "but her name will not rest, because mars mayfield is the reason i am the person i am today. i wouldn't be here without her," gen pauses, clearing her throat while her jaw trembles slightly, "i truly hope that whoever committed this awful crime will pay for what they did. thank you," she finally finishes.
all the students—even valentine—repeatedly clap their hands together for genevieve as she smiles while patting beneath her eyes with tissue.
"hey!" raven loudly whispers from behind chris, gathering the entire friend group's attention. val looks back as chris looks up at raven, his back resting on her legs. "you guys all coming to the bonfire i'm hosting at the beach tonight?" she questions, biting back a grin even though valentine wasn't made aware of this plan at all.
it's not like she expects to immediately be a part of their friendship group, but the way she feels like she's intentionally being left out upsets her slightly. it's almost as if sophie is the only one who's making an effort to make val feel somewhat included, even if she doesn't understand their silly references to things that happened in the past. the constant 'remember when', conversations just put a frown on her face. watching chris erupt into loud laughter with everybody makes her feel strongly upset because she wishes she could giggle at stupid jokes with him.
"oh come on raven, mars just died," aurora huffs with an eye roll, probably sick of how raven will never turn down the opportunity to party. "sorry chris," she sucks air through her teeth and pats the triplet on his back, but chris just shrugs his shoulders as a response.
raven runs her hands through her silky, ginger waves, brushing it to the side. "kay, but taking shots is how i mourn," she responds as her mouth curves into a smile and everybody softly chuckles at her reply.
"i'm...kinda in..." clementine trails off, followed by a coy smile. she high-fives raven as the redhead glances at everybody else, anticipating on whether they plan on coming too.
valentine genuinely isn't one for public settings, especially ones that involve drugs or drinking. she can't stand those type of environments, but if chris is going...she'll definitely be there without a doubt.
while everybody else share their own conversations, raven's hands find their way to chris' hair as he rests his head on her lap, tugging at his brunette waves and twirling them around her red acrylics. she looks around at everybody else, waiting for their responses but valentine feels jealousy bubbling in her gut. raven's head drops as she looks down, a smile on her face that he returns before she glances back at the group.
"yeah—fuck it, let's go," chris eventually mumbles through a sigh, leaning up and resting his arm on her thighs; now valentine knows what she's doing tonight.
; genevieve's pov
GENEVIEVE STRONGLY PASSED on going to the bonfire tonight for one reason only and that's because she has her suspicions on what happened to mars, or more-so, 'who' happened. of course gen would never pass the opportunity to spend time with her friends on a beach with free drinks and music, but mars is more important than a couple shots of tequila.
she huffs, standing outside of sophie's shared dorm room with a plan. to genevieve's surprise, valentine actually joined her friends on raven's beach bonfire event, giving her free access to look around.
call her crazy but genevieve has her suspicions and this is the only way she'll manage to get closure on what happened to her best friend. mars was a loving, kind soul. sure she made some mistakes a couple times, but she didn't deserve a brutal death followed with her body rotting in a ditch.
thankfully sophie left her door unlocked for genevieve after she told her extremely generous friend that she needed to borrow some notes for english, so now here she is, standing in their dorm room.
genevieve's not really sure where to start looking for any evidence that proves valentine had something to do with it, so she quickly rushes to the bedside drawers. her hand pulls it open and genevieve kneels down, rummaging through the stacks of papers and random items because it's not a coincidence that something bad happened as soon as val transferred to blackmore.
the blonde carelessly throws everything out of the drawer, littering the carpeted ground with all sorts of trash before moving to the shelf below it. but to no avail, she finds absolutely nothing linking valentine to the crime. she should be glad though, glad that she's not going to the same college as a murderer.
moments pass by and genevieve frustratedly runs her hands through her blonde hair, slightly ruining her bangs out of pure stress. genevieve brings her knees up to her chest as she pouts her lips slightly, just wanting to find out the truth.
she picks up her phone from beside her, immediately opening the app with all of her contacts. genevieve finds it slightly stupid, but for some reason she finds herself calling mars at the most random times when she needs comfort. hearing her close friend's voice, even if it's a voicemail from her phone, is enough to warm her heart slightly so that's what she does.
however, as she holds her phone to her ear, genevieve's face crinkles with confusion at the vivid vibrating sound filling her ears from near her. she pauses in her movements, convinced that she's just hallucinating but the noise doesn't stop. in fact, it gets louder as gen lowers her head towards where the sound is coming from—beneath valentine's bed.
her heart drops, but it doesn't stop the escalating curiosity flowing through her body. genevieve lays on her stomach, ignoring the fact that this is definitely unsanitary and ruining her third outfit of the day. she stretches her hand, feeling all sorts of dust particles caking her skin on the palm of her hand.
genevieve is completely hopeless until her hand comes into contact with something that feels like a box, and she chuckles dryly before pulling it out from beneath the bed. it sits on the carpeted floor as genevieve crosses her legs, taking deep breaths while her mind rambles on with different possibilities of what's hiding in the box in front of her.
"fuck.." genevieve breathes out, her eyebrows knitting together as she lifts the lid off of the box and it's not at all what she expected. "what the hell?" she questions under her breath, picking up a printed polaroid picture of chris that she knows belongs in his wallet.
she shudders while placing the polaroid next to her phone, but the next thing genevieve discovers makes her jaw practically drop to the ground, because there mars' phone is, the screen cracked and bloody. "oh my god," genevieve whispers to herself, taking pictures of this solid evidence with her phone.
but just as she closes the box, the sound of the door creaking open fills her ears.
