IRL ! ; christopher's pov
CHRIS RUSHES TO the sound of the petrified screams, listening to the way the leaves crunch beneath valentine's feet as she follows after him. the night air hangs thick with undeniable tension while their shadows dance under the pale moonlight. he feels his heartbeat rapidly speed up while breaths hastily escape from his lips, strongly not wanting his intuition to be correct.
the two of them run through the bushes until they find where everybody is, standing over some sort of ditch with their backs facing towards them. valentine looks up at chris, a crease between her eyebrows as he anxiously pulls his bottom lip between his teeth. "no..." chris whispers to himself under his breath while the two of them slowly walk towards where people are standing.
"everybody get back!" one of the officers yell, using his hands to usher the witnesses away, but they don't listen and neither does chris, "i said get back!" he shouts even louder than before while his hand reaches for the part of his belt where his gun comfortably sits.
chris thickly swallows his nerves as valentine trails behind him, pushing people out of his way without a care in the world. but shortly after that, chris really wishes he didn't, because as he looks down at the ditch, he realizes that his worst fear has come true.
his heart hastily drops at the sight of mars' lifeless body carelessly laying in the ditch, blood and dirt caked all over her skin; the way her lifeless body lays just shows that whoever did this lacks a heart. he's in shock for the first couple of seconds, his lips parting and a crease between his eyebrows once he eventually realizes that mars is gone, actually gone.
it's as if all of the happy, joyful memories between the two of them run through his mind like some sort of dramatic montage. his jaw trembles while his hands ball into fists, anger, sadness, confusion and every other stages of grief growing in his body. anxiety and fear bubbles in chris' gut as he feels bile practically rise up to his throat.
everything around him is a blur: genevieve's muffled cries as she rests her head on raven's shoulder, police officers trying to usher everybody away with their loud voices or colby tapping chris on the shoulder to gain his attention.
chris feels the familiar feeling of a stinging sensation in his heart while questions flood his mind. sure mars cheated and lied, but he also loved her and no amount of lies can change that immense feeling of bliss whenever she looked at him. he's not a sensitive person, but in this moment of time he wants to drop to the floor and sob.
his lips put sadly out of sadness just as he feels the ghost of someone's touch against his fingers; the touch is soft and comforting. chris looks down at his hand, noticing how valentine's two fingers are curled around his own, her thumb gently rubbing against her skin and this is honestly the comfort that chris needs right now.
"okay, everybody step away!" a detective finally speaks up, his hands in the pockets of his gray suit. "this is now an open investigation," he adds on with a slight shake of his head and a hand on mr mayfield's shoulder. the thought of how mr mayfield feels in this moment honeatly didn't even cross chris' mind and he feels guilty that he didn't acknowledge that.
mars had her bad traits, but she also had her perfect ones even if 'nobody's perfect', though she was in her own way. she's somebody that people looked up to or wanted to be like because of her perfect life. she was rich, a cheerleader, a sorority sister, had a loving family, a caring boyfriend, a bright future, the looks, the body and everything more that people envied. so the fact that she's dead so suddenly with a lack of warning just twists chris' heart even more and he genuinely already misses the way her glowing smile lit up every room.
"dude..." colby breathes out while shaking his head due to the disbelief that this is their reality, his hands tucked into the pockets of his yellow and blue letterman jacket. "this is absolutely insane..." he trails off, his voice falling silent once he notices the bleak expression across chris' face. a few moments page before colby pulls him into a hug, a crease appearing between chris' eyebrows since colby really isn't the affectionate type.
"thanks, bro," chris mutters while colby pulls away, just as nick and matt appear next to him. the sympathetic looks plastered across their faces followed by the way they envelop their practically identical brother into a warm, tight embrace is another reason that he feels as if he's about to break down. "she's gone guys," he mumbles into matt's shoulder, squeezing his eyes closed. "she's gone."

"APPARENTLY THEY'RE HAVING an assembly later on," sophie empathetically mumbles while her chin rests on the palm of her hand. her gaze flickers between everybody with a frown on her face. "like, a memorial kinda thing, you know?" she lowly says, pressing her lips into a thin line.
sophie sits in the library, a seat away from valentine while an open book rests on her lap as always. one thing about valentine is that she'll never not take a chance to learn a new word, even despite the circumstances...the circumstances in this context being valentine surrounded by all of sophie's friends to discuss what happened to mars as if she's not responsible for it.
valentine's eyes glide over the typed out letters, "wynorrific", she whispers to herself as a crease appears between her eyebrows. she eventually learns that it describes something that is both beautiful and horrific at the same time. quite fitting actually.
"um, hello!" genevieve obnoxiously snaps at valentine as she stands at the short side of the table, blinking repeatedly. val's eyes dart away from her book and instead to the blonde girl staring at her. "shut your book val, we're talking about some serious shit," she looks around at the rest of her friends seated at the table.
valentine sits next to aurora hartley—who is in between her and sophie—as opposite them is colby douglas, his arm thrown around honey gilmore's shoulder. he lowers his head to whisper something in her ear, followed by the two of them erupting into quiet giggles but valentine genuinely smiles at the gesture she's witnessing, wishing that she could act like that with chris.
and speak of the devil, chris enters the library with nick and matt on his sides, the three of them seeming to share casual convo. for somebody who just lost his (ex)girlfriend, chris seems pretty normal and valentine narrows her eyes at him as he reaches the table.
raven pierce raises from her seated position next to honey, a sympathetic expression plastered across her face. valentine examines her every move, watching as she pulls chris into an embrace for a couple moments, whereas she only shares quick hugs with his brothers.
valentine tilts her head slightly as her gaze follows everybody surrounding her, wondering if their intentions with chris are anything other than being his friend. whether they want to own him, have him as their own, or anything else; the thought slightly fuels anger into her.
genevieve gives the triplets a tight lipped smile, gesturing her hand towards the three other empty seats she reserved for them. valentine lets out a quiet sigh of relief as chris sits next to her, their knees brushing momentarily against each other's. val doesn't move away, but for some reason, chris doesn't either. she feels butterflies flutter around inside of her stomach as she pushes her lips into a thin line to hide the smile growing.
"okay guys," genevieve announces, snapping valentine out of the perfect day dream she was having about chris, just to be met with gen's irritating voice. "i called this little 'group meeting'," she uses her fingers for air quotes, "because somebody killed our girl mars," she looks at all of the girls seated at the table except for valentine.
raven nods her head, clicking her fingers in agreement rather than clapping, making valentine's face crinkle with confusion. she never really understood why people did that, always assuming that it's just a rich people thing.
"and we're gonna find out who did it," genevieve continues, glaring at everybody and holding her gaze on valentine for way longer than the others. val truthfully wonders how genevieve already has her suspicions about valentine being involved, but she just awkwardly smiles to hide the frustration bubbling inside of her.
colby dryly chuckles while rolling his eyes. "okay well, 'your girl'," he pauses to mock genevieve's finger quotations, "was hooking up with jason, so maybe the first thing you should look into is that," a smug smile grows on his face as genevieve's expression falters for a second and valentine stifles quiet laughter.
"last time i checked, it wasn't illegal to have sex, colby!" she exclaims, way too loud for a library to add on, while she defensively holds her hands in the air. the librarian places her fingers over her lips with a loud 'shh!' but genevieve just lifts her upper lip into a sneer as a response. "though chris, you didn't deserve that. mars just made a mistake, she's only human," she forces a grin.
"a mistake that she made multiple times?" nick adds on, tapping his finger against his chin as if he's thinking. it's really sweet that nick is quick to defend his brother, his blood, even under the circumstances of discussing a murder of one of their friends.
matt quietly chuckles as he folds his arms, his tattoos fully on display due to the vest he's wearing. that's another thing valentine uses to distinguish the difference between the triplets—the lack of ink on chris' soft skin. "okay, so you called us here to do the detective'a job?" matt quips with a grin tugging on his lips, watching as genevieve blankly stares to form a response.
"matt..." sophie whispers, shooting the triplet the 'please just let her do this,' look, making valentine chuckle quietly. "go on gen," she claps with a tone of enthusiasm, watching as genevieve nods her head.
colby loudly sighs, throwing his head back in annoyance. "please don't tell me i'm stuck in the middle of some weird, slasher movie," he groans with furrowed eyebrows, the rest of the group mumbling words of agreement. "and also, shouldn't archer and clem be here for this, not hooking up in the janitor's closet?" he tilts his head with pursed lips.
valentine grimaces slightly, slowly realizing that these are the last type of people who she would hang out with. maybe sophie or aurora, but other than that she would rather die and let her body rot in a ditch. she pushes her lips together, 'too soon', valentine thinks to herself.
"yeah, anybody else feel like we're in scream now?" genevieve asks, looking around at everybody and valentine shivers at the thought of living in some sort of horror movie. "also, ew!" realization about the possibility of archer and clem having some sort of intimate relationship. she picks up her phone from the table, switching it on and looking at the tim, "listen, we gotta get to the assembly."
valentine's heart slightly drops and she tugs at the thin material of the tights she's wearing. her gaze falls to her knee, noticing how chris still hasn't moved it away so she stupidly chooses to look up at him, his blue eyes already glued to her. she looks away, attempting to brush away the fact that her cheeks heat up any time they share an interaction.
but valentine knows that this is only the beginning and she has so much more to do until chris will finally be hers.
