Chapter 5: The Frog With Slit Eyes

Vanya

The flowers scream, clearly scared. The whole room changes somehow probably from magic. I fall on the floor, and try to get up. I let out a huff, the room slowly shaping into its new form as it settles. The next thing I know, there was a room with a little water pond in it. I kneel down and notice little tadpoles swimming peacefully. A little frog jumps out of the water and greets me with a delighted noise. I pick up the frog and hold it close to my chest. Its features are of a forest green color with white spots on its back. It's tiny slit and long eyes stare back at me. The black cat I've been seeing is sitting on the floor.

"The roses equal the witch's life. When the witch dies, the roses die." The cat said casually. I start walking and find a door that appears out of thin air. I suppose anything can happen in this house.

My hand wraps around the cold door handle and I open it. The first step I take is almost the last step I take, because I almost fall into an endless pit. There's a small rope that leads from the entrance, and at the end, there's a button. That button has to do something...right?

I kneel down and place my hand against the rope. If I were to step on that, I would be dead, and I can't even see the end of the empty pit. I rack my brain for ideas when all of a sudden I hear a loud, "Ribbit." My eyes dart to the frog and I pat its head. I whisper to it to hop to the button and I gently place it on the scratchy rope.

The kind frog jumps across, and my heart thuds against my chest and I finally smile when he presses the button with his tiny frog body. A loud crash emits my ears, and a path appears before me. I walk across and pick up the frog, stroking its quaint slimy head. The door opens, and I stroll happily inside.

There's a door with a peephole and I peer inside. There lies a slithering snake, its scales looking sharp, beady eyes staring at me. I back away from the peephole and read a sign out loud. "BENDY, FEED THE SNAKE!"

I open the door slightly, and the snake perks his head and charges at me. I slam the door shut, not risking my dear life to some animal.

On the door is a little slot and I roam inside the room, looking for Bendy, or just food.

"Ribbit."

The frog. I look down at the sweet amphibian. I open the slot and softly push it in, but it doesn't budge. It's a frog whose lost. Looking for its home. I shove it inside and I peek through the peephole. The snakes are busy eating it up. I wince and open the door, running as fast I can to the next door.

I look back to the frog's destiny, seeing blood dripping from the snake's mouth. I haul myself through the door and there are boxes upon boxes in front of me. My heart is still pounding inside my chest from the snake incident and getting past the boxes, taking a strand of rope on my way. I need to get out of this place soon.

A bright blue door stands in front of me and I open it, no key needed. There are a few shelves of books, and an invisible being surrounded by books on the floor. I sit next to him, and I can make out are freckles across his clear face. "Hello! Do you have rope? I need rope to tie these books." He said sweetly and I nod. I give him the strand of rope I had collected in the box room and hand it over.

"Thanks!" He cheers and I stand up seeing a desk with the same diary on it. I read it. "But one girl always visited me. She always cheered me up, and we would play together or have tea in my rose gardens." The paragraph ended. I flip through the pages some more, but that's all it reads.

I wander around and notice a glass table. There are two slots for two different items. In one slot, is a pure white book with golden text reading The Book Of Life. There's a note on the other slot reading The Book Of Death. I hurried over to the boy who I had given rope to, but he wasn't there. There was rope hanging from the ceiling, and a noose over the invisible boy's neck. Under him rest a pile of books stacked on top of each other.

I dig through the books on the floor, looking past fairy tales and stories about tigers and cats. I toss away books, and scan the bookshelf, name by name. On the bottom, is a black book. The book of death! I snatch it and place it in its assigned slot. I hear a click sound and the glass table shakes, the two books vanishing from my sight.
