Chapter 1: The Girl Who Played Games
Emily
"Don't forget I'm picking you up later, Emily!" My moms voice called out as a sparkling white SUV pulled away from a parking lot. My brown eyes wandered all over the surroundings. The patch of woods in the distance, followed by a trail. Some people passing by.
A hunting range not too far from here, and a 7-11 close by. I turned around, facing a dark blue building that was labeled "ARCADE". It was one of my favorite places, I've been here so many times. I walked in and inhaled the familiar smell of bubblegum, snacks, and the faint smell of roses from air fresheners.
There's barely anyone here even though it was a Friday. Not many people went to these old arcades anymore, and just went to malls or shopping districts.
I was they very few of people who went here, however. "Emily! Nice to see you again!" A boys voice calls out. Yaz, my friend and one of the workers here, waved me over. I always could tell his cheerful voice and his many freckles. I nod and smile to him. "I'm just gonna play for a while, okay Yaz?" He gives me a nod back and continues to read his book of kittens.
I wandered around the arcade, passing games I played multiple times. I traveled towards the quieter and unpopular section of the property. I ran my fingers through the machines I passed by and noticed an arcade machine I haven't seen before. "Into The Woods" was labeled in a fancy script. I was lucky enough to be able to read it.
The gaming system wasn't like the others, it was a dark purple, almost black, with painted gems in a ruby red while other games had neon colors and bright screens. It seemed like a rather monotone game instead of the more colorful ones. There was a keyboard of a dull grey color in front of it. I haven't noticed it when I came to the arcade before but why not give it a try?
I perched down onto the bright red stool in front of the game and layed my fingers across the keyboard. It seemed brand new and untouched.. No cheeto dusted fingerprints. No pencil graffiti on the side. No chewed gum on the bottom. I rummaged through my pockets and got a few quarters out. The game seemed so fresh, it must have at least been a dollar to play. I pushed a silver coin into the slot and was about to place in another but the machine spit it out. I was a bit surprised and puzzled. I tried to put it in again but it rolled out again. Was it broken? Should I tell someone? I looked around and looked back at the game. The screen wasn't black anymore. It said "PLAY" in bold white letters against a background with trees.
I press play, as faint music plays. Another screen pops up. 1 file is empty. Nobody has played the game yet besides me. I'm about to type 'Emily' in as my name but as soon as I press the E key, the file is added.
"Huh?" I squinted to the screen to read it.
Name: Vanya - Age: 13 - Items: None
"I guess my name is Vanya then." I say aloud to myself. On the side of the file is a young girl with blonde braids laying against her shoulders. She is wearing a blue dress with a white apron. Her facial expression is soft, her lips slightly upturned. She looks like a pretty sweet girl. I click the file Vanya and wait a few seconds before the game uploads...
