THE SHORT HAIR EATS

Elena's room was a mess, with clothes scattered across her bed, open suitcases on the floor, and stacks of neatly folded shirts waiting to be packed.

She sat on the floor, rifling through a pile of jeans while her mom stood by the closet, handing her items and suggesting what she might need for her trip.

"You'll need at least two jackets," her mom said, placing a thick black coat on the bed. "It's going to be cold where you're filming."

"Got it," Elena replied, tossing the jeans into her suitcase.

She glanced at Aaron, who was sprawled out on her bed, grinning down at his phone.

"What's got you smiling like that?" Elena asked, raising an eyebrow.

Aaron didn't look up. "Nothing."

Elena smirked, her tone teasing. "Texting Charolette, huh?"

Aaron's head shot up, his face instantly turning red. "No! I'm not—"

Their mom turned to face him, curiosity lighting up her expression. "What's this about Charolette?" she asked, folding her arms with a knowing smile.

Aaron groaned, flopping onto his back dramatically. "Nothing! It's nothing."

"Doesn't look like nothing," Elena teased, grabbing a hoodie from the bed and tossing it at him. "Your face is turning the same color as your phone case."

Aaron muttered something under his breath, but their mom pressed further. "Aaron, are you and Charolette... talking?"

Aaron sighed, finally sitting up. "Okay, fine. Yes, we're talking. Happy?"

Their mom's smile widened as she sat down on the edge of the bed. "I knew it. She's a sweet girl."

"She is," Aaron admitted, his voice softer now.

Elena grinned, looking between the two of them. "Well, that's adorable. Now I get to tell everyone you're the hopeless romantic of the family."

Aaron shot her a look. "Oh, please. If anyone's the hopeless romantic, it's you."

Elena raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Aaron smirked, leaning back on his elbows. "You and Mason."

Elena's cheeks flushed instantly. "What about me and Mason?"

Aaron shrugged, his tone casual but laced with amusement. "You've got this whole 'will-they-won't-they' thing going on. It's like a rom-com waiting to happen."

"Don't start," Elena warned, trying to focus on folding a sweater.

Their mom's interest piqued at the mention of Mason. "Mason, huh? What's going on there?"

Elena sighed, sitting back on her heels. "Nothing's going on. Aaron's just being annoying."

Aaron grinned. "I'm not wrong, though."

Their mom placed a gentle hand on Elena's shoulder, her expression softening. "You know, it's okay to like someone, Lena. Mason's a good guy. Your dad and I really like him."

Elena fiddled with the zipper of her suitcase, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's not that simple."

"Why not?" her mom asked, sitting down beside her on the floor.

Elena hesitated, her thoughts swirling. "Because... what if it messes things up? What if he doesn't feel the same way? What if—"

Her mom cut her off gently. "Elena, you can't live your life based on 'what ifs.' Sometimes, you just have to take a chance. And from what I've seen, Mason seems to care about you a lot."

Elena looked at her mom, her heart swelling at the warmth in her voice. "You think so?"

Her mom smiled, brushing a strand of hair behind Elena's ear. "I know so. Just trust yourself, okay?"

Aaron, who had been silently watching the exchange, decided to chime in. "I mean, she's not wrong. The guy practically lights up whenever he sees you."

"Okay, that's enough," Elena said, throwing a pillow at Aaron.

He caught it, laughing. "I'm just saying."

Their mom stood up, placing a hand on Elena's shoulder. "I'll let you finish packing. Just don't overthink it, Lena. You've got this."

Elena nodded, watching as her mom left the room. Aaron stayed behind, still lounging on her bed.

"So," he said, smirking, "you gonna text him?"

Elena rolled her eyes. "Just text Char "

Aaron grinned, holding up his phone. "Already am."
