The group piled out of Aaron's car, laughing and jostling each other as they approached the cozy Chinese restaurant tucked into a corner of a busy shopping plaza.
The air smelled like soy sauce, garlic, and sizzling meat, and Elena's stomach growled in anticipation.
"This place better be good," Alex said, squinting up at the sign above the door. "I skipped lunch for this."
"You skipped lunch because you forgot to eat," Amelia corrected, nudging him with her elbow.
"It's a solid excuse," Mason chimed in, grinning as he held the door open for the group.
The restaurant was warm and bustling with energy, red lanterns hanging from the ceiling and the faint clatter of dishes in the background.
The six of them slid into a large booth near the window, Aaron immediately grabbing a menu and flipping through it.
"I'm starving," Aaron announced dramatically. "El, don't let me order half the menu."
"You're on your own," Elena said with a smirk, glancing at her own menu. "I'm getting orange chicken. Maybe some dumplings too."
"Of course," Charolette teased, sitting next to her. "You're predictable."
"Predictably great taste," Mason said, leaning back in his seat. "You've been ordering the same thing since forever."
Elena gave him a playful glare. "And it's always a good choice. Don't knock it."
After a few minutes of bantering and indecisiveness (mostly from Alex, who couldn't decide between lo mein and fried rice), the group finally placed their orders.
When the food arrived, the table turned chaotic—chopsticks clashing, dumplings disappearing faster than anyone could keep track of, and Mason trying to steal some of Elena's orange chicken only to get swatted away.
"You have your own food, mase !" Elena exclaimed, laughing.
"But yours tastes better!" he argued, grinning as he successfully snagged a piece.
"You're impossible," Elena muttered, but the smile on her face said she didn't really mind.
Once they finished eating, Aaron stretched dramatically. "Okay, I vote we walk this off. To the mall?"
"Yes!" Amelia said, clapping her hands together. "I need to find a new jacket."
"And by 'new jacket,' you mean spending an hour in every store trying on everything," Alex teased.
"That's the whole point of shopping," Amelia retorted, grabbing her coat as the group headed out.
The car ride to the mall was just as lively as dinner had been. Alex and Amelia claimed the front passenger and middle seat, respectively, leaving the back row to Mason, Elena, and Charolette.
"Who's in charge of the aux?" Alex asked as soon as they buckled in.
"Not you!" Aaron said immediately, which made everyone laugh.
"I vote Mason," Elena said, handing him her phone. "You can't mess this up, right?"
"I make no promises," Mason replied, scrolling through her playlist.
Soon, the opening notes of a pop song filled the car, and the group burst into a singalong.
Elena caught Mason's smirk out of the corner of her eye when Alex hit a particularly bad note, and she couldn't help but laugh.
"I regret this already," Aaron muttered, but the smile tugging at his lips betrayed him.
As they approached the mall, the conversation shifted to Aaron and Mason debating which Star Wars movie was the best.
"It's definitely The Empire Strikes Back," Aaron insisted, glancing at Mason in the rearview mirror.
"Classic choice, but wrong," Mason said. "It's Revenge of the Sith."
"Obviously," Elena agreed, nudging Mason's shoulder. "And attack of the clones duh!"
"You guys have no taste," Aaron muttered.
"Bold words coming from someone who just ate three egg rolls by himself," Charolette quipped, earning a round of laughter.
They walked in a group for a while, but soon, Mason and Elena found themselves lingering behind as the others veered into a clothing store.
Elena grinned up at him. "What's the deal? You usually can't resist running to the nearest tech store."
Mason shrugged, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. "I guess I'm just enjoying the walk. Plus, it's nice having some time to just talk."
Elena raised an eyebrow, feeling a warmth spread in her chest. "Oh? Just talk, huh?"
"Yeah, you know, without a hundred people around," Mason said, giving her a sidelong glance. "Plus, you're not exactly the easiest person to get a word in with when Alex is around."
Elena laughed softly. "True. Alex can be a bit much."
They strolled along in comfortable silence for a few moments, passing by a store selling novelty socks.
Elena paused, eyeing a pair of socks with cute cats wearing glasses.
"Ooh, these are perfect for you," she said, holding them up to Mason's face.
He looked at them and chuckled. "I'm not sure if that's an insult or a compliment."
"Definitely a compliment," Elena teased. "But they'd look cute on you."
"Alright, I'll take your word for it," Mason said, smirking. "But if I wear those, you owe me a pizza."
She grinned, raising her eyebrows playfully. "I thought we agreed no more pizza talk."
Mason chuckled, shaking his head. "You really know how to ruin a good joke."
They both laughed, and as they kept walking, Elena felt the weight of the day shift. With Mason at her side, everything felt lighter—just a simple moment of connection.
As they rounded a corner, Mason stopped and pointed toward the fountain in the center of the mall. "You know, we should make a wish."
Elena tilted her head, curious. "A wish?"
"Yeah," Mason said with a grin. "You get one, and I get one."
"Alright, you first." Elena stepped up to the fountain, tossing a coin into the water and closing her eyes for a moment.
Mason did the same, glancing over at her as he tossed his coin. "So, what's your wish?"
Elena met his gaze, her heart giving a little flutter. "If I told you, it wouldn't come true," she said with a wink.
He smiled, and for a moment, the whole world felt like it paused. "I think you already know mine."
Elena didn't know what to say, but she smiled anyway, feeling the warmth of his words in her chest. It was a moment that didn't need to be explained.
