"Then the actors were hitting their marks and the slow dance was alight with sparks." Kahori views the world as a stage, where her survival is both a game and a performance. With a sharp mind and a keen sense of stealth, she skillfully manipulates her surroundings to her advantage, often at the expense of others. Despite her disregard for others' well-being, she is charming and outgoing, able to blend in and make allies when necessary, though she trusts very few. Graceful and calculated in her movements, Kahori is no stranger in scavenging from the dead, seizing valuables like guns and jewelry without remorse. She is pragmatic, unafraid to make tough decisions, and always keeps her eyes on the prize—her own survival. MEMORABLE RELATIONSHIPS.
✷ KURA TANIGUCHI was Kahori's ballet mentor and the source of her demise. Having retired from ballet before her prime had concluded due to an injury, Kura saw potential in the then 10-year-old Kahori during her audition for the Tokyo Junior Ballet association. From the start, Kura was the epitome of a disciplined and caring mentor, someone who wants to bring out the best in her protégée, but the tide shifted as Kahori grew up and a childhood hobby became her life. Kura pushed Kahori beyond her physical and emotional limits in pursuit of unattainable perfection, breaking her down bit-by-bit over every error in both her performance and herself as a person. Kahori was a puppet on her strings; persuaded by Kura to believe that only through relentless sacrifice and discipline could she achieve greatness. Kura's methods were harsh, bordering on abusive at times, forcing Kahori to endure grueling rehearsals, constant critiques, and emotional pressure to suppress any sign of vulnerability, even imposing the fear of Kahori being replaced by someone far greater than she ever was. As a result, Kahori began to lose touch with her own emotions, distancing herself from any sense of compassion or empathy. Kura's manipulations—whether subtle praise or cutting remarks—reinforced this mindset, making Kahori internalize that the only thing that mattered was perfection, no matter the cost. Studying Kura's behavior made it easy for her to learn how to lie and win the favor of judges, as well as her audience. Kahori's internal mental spiral began to emerge with outward jealousy, and she once caused a career-ending injury to one of her fellow dancers that caught Kura's eye too long out of the fear of being replaced. The impact of Kura's abuse didn't hit Kahori until the borderlands, and it was a difficult pill to swallow.
✷ HIKARI KUNIA was the only person that Kahori could trust in confidence besides Chishiya. When they met at Beach, she was immediately drawn to her by her mellow nature, and Kahori instantly knew that there was more to her that meets the eye. They often joke around with each other, and in better circumstances, they would've gone to nail salons  and shopping malls together.
✷ IPPEI OKI was too good for this world. Even Kahori could sense it. She knew right away that it wasn't possible for him to be the Jack of Hearts because she had seen his look of genuine fear countless times in new players. She reassured him before he died that she would not hold it against him if he intentionally wanted to say the wrong symbol to get it over with.
BACKSTORY.
I was tame, I was gentle, 'til the circus life made me mean. Kahori was born into a semi-wealthy family, a world that promised comfort but delivered little in the way of emotional support. Her parents, busy with their own lives and driven by social expectations, often saw her as a tool to enhance their status rather than a person with dreams and needs. She was their perfect daughter: poised, graceful, and brilliant in the art of ballet. The promise of a future full of glittering stages and awards seemed inevitable. But it was Kura, her mentor, who truly shaped her into what she became. Kura was a celebrated figure in the world of dance, known for her brutal training methods and no-tolerance approach to anything less than perfection. She had a unique ability to spot talent, but she also wielded this gift like a weapon. For Kura, ballet was not about art; it was about dominance, control, and extracting every ounce of potential, often through humiliation and cruelty. Under Kura's strict regime, Kahori was pushed past her physical and mental limits. Kura's criticisms were sharp, relentless, and often personal. "You're not good enough. You will never be good enough," were words that repeated in her mind, driving her to strive for an unattainable ideal of perfection. Kura demanded perfection not only in the studio but in every aspect of Kahori's life. Her body had to be flawless, her movements must be graceful but mechanical, and emotions were a liability. The slightest misstep in her posture, a second too long between pirouettes were a death sentence, except she wouldn't be met with death... more like the risk of being replaced. The constant pressure began to erode Kahori's sense of self-worth. She learned to associate love and approval with perfection, and failure—whether real or perceived—became a source of deep shame. Her body, once a vessel for expression, was slowly reduced to a machine: delicate but rigid, fragile but controlled.

FORMER RELATIONSHIPS.
Various flings even before the borderlands, and none of them meant a thing. She's been in relationships before, but she'd be lying if she said that they were genuinely for of love and more for comfort in order to make herself feel wanted and appreciated. She does use her charm as a way to manipulate Hatter in order to aid in Chishiya's plan to steal the playing cards, though, but their relationship was not heavily dwelled on and it served more as a distraction and a way for her to get the inside scoop on the location of the safe that held the cards.

WHO FELL FIRST.
It's really hard to say, but surprisingly it was Chishiya. It wasn't an immediate attraction, nor did he even view his admiration for Kahori as attraction, but he got used to her being around really quickly.
HEADCANONS.
✷ They met in the tag game in episode two of season one. Chishiya saw Kahori looting off of one of the deceased from the top floor of the motel. He thought that she was annoying when she entered the arena acting so frantic and confused, bur he knew immediately then that it was an act.
✷ He approached her afterwards outside of the motel, and that's when their allyship supposedly started.
✷ They have a mutual understanding of the fact that they will backstab each other for their own survival if it really comes down to it.
✷ If there is one bed in a place that they decide to take refuge in, they don't even worry about one of them sleeping on the floor. They sleep together with a pillow in-between them.
✷ Chishiya sometimes stares at Kahori from afar for a very long time. He doesn't know what it is about her that makes him do that, but he doesn't really question it all that much. He just takes it as she's someone worth staring at.
✷ Kahori does his eyeliner sometimes, especially if he complains about not wanting to do it himself.
✷ They do kiss near the end of season two when they bunker down for the night after a long conversation about their lives before the borderlands. Kahori initiates it. It's a pretty long and drawn scene and it is implied that they slept together before the scene switches.
✷ Chishiya loves her beauty marks. He thinks that they're the most beautiful thing about her.
✷ They talk a lot of shit. Best believe they are the biggest haters in the damn room.
✷ Kahori splits up with him in season two after the King of Spades' grenade prevents them from entering the car with Kunia, Usagi, Arisu, and Ann. Chishiya grabbed Kahori's hand each time they had to run to ensure that she stayed behind him.
✷ Even though they are the same height, Kahori appears taller than him when she wears elevated shoes.
✷ They have such a bittersweet ending. They both do not remember each other when they wake up from their coma, but it is implied that they at least become friends in the living world when the show ends.
✷ They both have trouble with empathy and forming meaningful relationships with other people. That's partially how they bonded in the first place.

✷ Outside of the borderlands, Chishiya would've definitely attended every show she had... even if he thinks that ballets are the "most boring thing in the world."

✷ Kahori is a way more affectionate lover than Chishiya is. Very rarely would he initiate anything romantic, but Kahori honestly does not mind that. It's usually her that's the first to grab his hand or kiss him.
✷ Chishiya does love resting his head on her lap while she combs her fingers through his hair though.
✷ Kahori genuinely did not believe that he was a pediatric cardiologist when he first told her. She was literally like, "well, if we're lying now: I was a farmer with fifteen cows before this!"
✷ Chishiya is SUCH a dry texter and it genuinely makes Kahori mad. She could send him a paragraph of text and he would respond with "I'm not reading all that, but I'm happy for you, or sorry that happened."
✷ Since Chishiya knows a thing or two about medical stuff, he's always the first to tell her that she should take care of herself. He usually leaves water on her night stand because her routine is a lot more physically demanding than his.
✷ One thing he will not play about is getting her feminine products or whatever she needs when she's on her period. He is not willing to test her during that time, and honest to god, he doesn't know why anyone would do that to their girlfriends.
✷ Kahori likes to ask him things out of genuine curiosity, and always takes the facts that he says as truths. "I don't need Google. My boyfriend knows everything."

HEADCANONS.
✷ Kahori still struggles with striving for perfection. It's unfortunately a mindset that's drilled into her. She believes that she is nothing without a good performance whether it's on stage or in the death games.
✷ Her will to live was high from the beginning. Her worst fear was fading into obscurity and dying in a time where no one knows her name. That's a big reason why she survived half of what she endured in the borderlands.
