VIOLA MEYER is named after Viola smith, the fastest female drummer in the entire world. She's done wasting her years away at community college in her small hometown and is determined to get into Nocturne University in New York. Her world is suddenly not-so bleak when she opens the acceptance letter for Nocturne with the promise of a scholarship. Viola is constantly chasing greatness, but it won't come so easily. University is unkind to her, constantly tossing complicated relationships, the stress of maintaining her GPA and mending broken family ties at her. During her time at Nocturne, Viola must confront both the present and the past to secure her future.

VIKTOR NOVAK likes consistency. Entering his third year at Nocturne, he's maintained his position as core drummer in the University's official Jazz studio band for all three years — the first and only student to become a core drummer during his first year. He's emotionally unavailable and he's okay with that. His world is suddenly thrown off its axis when a new member arrives and challenges his spot in Studio band. And for some reason, Viktor just can't get her out of his head. The line between hate and love becomes blurry in his eyes.

But Jazz is a constant competition, there's no room for love or warmth if you want to be the greatest.
