my heart is like a tangerine
ripe and sweet and akin
to a nut that is hard from the outside
but so very soft from within

my heart is fragile, only protected
by walls of ice cold caution, insecurities and pain
my stupid heart is paper-thin
and past experiences have left many a stain.

its core is soft and orange
but it's hidden from the eye,
if you desire to see it
you have to bid its outer layers goodbye
