rhys is energetic, free spirited, and he's a huge drinker. he's always walking around with a bottle of something, whether it's up against his lips or tucked into his coat, you'll probably always find some form of alcohol on his person. despite this, you'll never find him overly drunk unless he's at a party or messing around with his friend. he always somehow managed to stay sober enough to properly function and do his duties, no matter how often you'll see him drinking. it's remarkable, actually.
the darker side to his drinking is the burning conscious that he drinks to ignore. he drinks whenever he finds himself sober enough to think too much. why? well, he finds his thoughts to be morbid and macabre and rather scary. they're also sad and dark and intrusive, and to top it all off, the fear of accepting his own identity is the largest reason he's often so drunk and disorderly.
to build on his mental disarray and trouble accepting himself, another common coping mechanism is to sleep with as many women as he can. he'll never be ths ladies man his bff is, nor will he ever be as good of a flirt, but he somehow finds a way to... well, get that bread. it's part of his identity crisis and wanting to ignore it in any way physically possible. he tries really, really hard to ignore himself through both drinking and disorderly conduct, and obviously it works well enough.
rhys is always a funny guy to be around, whether he's drunkenly complaining about random things, drunk crying (it may sound cruel but he's usually quite funny), or just simply being sarcastic and funny on purpose. he's quite entertaining, which must be why manzi takes an interest in him. not even just his best friend, but everybody else. it's always so amusing to others to watch. maybe it's also disheartening to watch him drink and make a fool of himself nearly every day of his life, but nobody will disagree that it's very, very amusing.
rhys and his buddy are always running around causing havoc and trouble, a bit of a duo with the 'partners in crime' image. rhys always finds it exhilarating to run around having fun with his best friend in the whole world, his main man! it's fun, it's freedom. he knows he has a job to do, but honestly, he's only there because of his daddy's money and influence so why not have some fun with manzi? he never really cared about being a guard, honestly.
rhys wanted to be a poet, once upon a time. he still has a dream to publish his own book someday, despite the ironically sobering truth thst he never will. he writes anyways, and he does it quite frequently. maybe the alcohol just gives him so many ideas, or maybe he just has a lot of emotions.
he actually does, he's a pretty sensitive young guy. once again, this could definitely be the alcohol, but even sober he's sensitive and takes everything to heart.
don't misinterpret his laid back attitude, he's still a valkan and he's still very dangerous. he has a wit as sharp as a sword and a sword as sharp as his wit. he may waste his days trying to run from himself but there's a lot he can learn and see when hes doing so. the only person he's loyal to is manzi, which can cause problems for his guardship, his morality, his family, and even manzi himself.
overall, you could call rhys a sensitive, alcoholic, promiscuous, sarcastic, moody poet. you could call him a guard, a valkan, and asshole, a flirt, anything really! he doesn't care, and he won't care. so long as you don't call him a homosexual.

a little scar above his eyebrow. it's very hard to see unless you get really close, but he fell down the stairs once as a child and, well... yeah. it's not the most glorious scar.

rhys was born into a rich valkan family, whose name is almost universally known. they're a family of high-ranking guards and noblemen, and they've been known for this and their undercover mafia-type circle for centuries. the name ammolt is almost as old as valka itself, even.
rhys's mother died under very suspicious circumstances, but nobody was in the place to question it. rhys doesn't remember it - he was only three at the time - but he gets vivid flashbacks of having a picnic with her the day before she died out in the garden.
rhys was always a troublemaker, which must have been why his father was always so much more strict on him than anybody else. fix your clothes, wake up on time, do your homework, no friends, no pets, nothing! it was frustrating. he almost ran away, but by the time he was old enough to formulate himself a plan, he was already being shipped off to guard training. he was about fourteen when he was dropped off at the training centre, which was actually where he met his best friend, manzi. he's the only person rhys trusts, and he's been the bonnie to his clyde ever since. they quickly became best friends and trouble makers, and especially drinking and partying buddies. it was around fifteen, towards the end of their training, when rhys began to notice certain... things that he couldn't ignore. he wrote his feelings down in poems, how he felt about the general and such, but found that to not be quite enough. his partying got worse, his fighitng got sloppier, and his drinking got heavier. it became nearly a daily occurance, and has stayed fairly consistent for the last few years. he tends to brush it off whenever anyone mentions any form of concern for his actions.
his daddy's money and power was what got rhys a job in the castle, mostly because his father wouldn't accept a failure in the family. it was also what got him a round trip to eldur, where his father hoped that rhys would see the other kingdom's guards and nobles and straighten out his behaviour.
