OBSERVANT, PASSIVE, AND THOUGHTFUL are three descriptors of aries. manipulative, sly, and intuitive are another cast of less obvious traits aries harbors. externally, aries is a quiet man who thinks things through before he speaks or takes action. he's a logical thinker and not an emotional one. though he believes emotions are powerful, he thinks someone who can see beyond is the more skilled of the two. though passion is inspiring, passion hardly leads to success. and so, aries made himself the more successful of the two. where stefan is impulsive, aries is calm and clear. concise and put together, aries appears the much more tolerant of the two—and is.

say, if you had to choose between conversing with stefan and aries, you'd probably choose aries. however, it also depends on what your goal is. if it's to get close to the royal family, you'd want to talk to stefan considering he's easier to interest than aries. now, if you'd like to guarantee surviving a confrontation, you'd choose aries. being the more observant and passive one of the two brothers, aries has a much easier time reading people and a much easier time catching people in a lie. where his brother is more prone to blindly accuse others, aries is more likely to accuse someone once he's compiled evidence like the logical person he is.

however, being the stable one in the family is difficult. his brother makes controversial decisions and heinous errors and his sister's got unmatched pride and a temper moments away from boiling over. so to speak, aries is the mediator in his family. he tries to keep his siblings from making rash decisions although he's grown to learn stefan cannot be controlled, only manipulated during short, pivotal moments. so, yes, there is a method to aries. he's a rigid man and does things in a very specific, scheduled manner. you could probably call him a little strict, uptight, or stern, but he isn't about to lash out at someone for disrupting him. and though he is prone to getting mildly annoyed, aries is an understanding, good-natured man.

as for emotions, well, those certainly aren't his strong suit. though he is intuitive and good at sensing things, aries himself doesn't know how to properly convey any emotions besides calm and steady. yes, he feels all sorts of emotions but those are much more dull when compared to the emotions of plenty of others. he's just never been one to cry or lash out in a fit of rage. if anything, he bottles everything up and calls it a day. it's a struggle for him to maintain this calm exterior that he's built up and it's even more difficult to feel calm in a land like elyria. surrounded by snakes and overflowing ambition, aries hasn't got much to do besides mediate and stabilize. it seems that will always be his role until the day he dies.

the witch hunts — aries hasn't got much of an opinion. since he's not being persecuted, he finds it difficult to step into the shoes of these people. however, he is against injustice and he deems this as an example of it. after all, many have committed no crimes, and children and elders are persecuted alike. it's about eliminating magic altogether—leaving the youth behind will only breed it.
sexism — aries doesn't have a strong stance either simply because he doesn't have to worry about it. however, he also sees it as unjust which means he is against it but won't speak of it.
homophobia — aries knows he likes men as well as women and he doesn't see the issue with liking the same gender. love is more than reproducing, after all. if it were then why do people marry for love? if love were about reproducing then why marry at all? it wouldn't matter in this case.

ARIES GREW UP AS THE YOUNGEST of his family for a while. born before him was stefan and reina with miscarriages and stillborns in between. stefan was twelve years older than him and reina was ten years older. due to their age gap, aries wasn't very close to his siblings because by the time he was seven, they were sixteen and fourteen and much closer to each other than they were to him. this was natural to aries, though.

having been a quiet child to begin with, aries never much cared for his brother's obsession with war and military nor did aries care for reina's warcraft. being the peaceful one, his two older siblings never suited him well. in fact, aries preferred their mother and father and would spend much more time around them than around his siblings. having enjoyed reading and caring for the stable animals, aries made friends with palace staff and stable boys. still, aries kept more to himself throughout the years. however, when aries was nine, his sister was assassinated. apparently a man harboring a faceshifting magic had snuck in and poisoned her food. since that moment, things changed among his family and the whole attitude of the palace shifted, too. people were executed, poison tasters were hired, and more and more guards took up stations in the palace to protect the royals.

for a while, aries hated all magic. he was young at the time—only nine—so it made sense to hate something he didn't understand. but as he aged, he learned that magic was only frightening in the hands of those who would misuse it. with magic comes fear no matter where you go, so yes, aries never stopped fearing magic but he's since learned to tolerate it. however, his brother had other, more genocidal opinions, but i'm getting ahead of myself. then, when aries was eleven, his mother died while giving birth to his younger sister. now, he never harbored any ill intent towards his sister but they were never close given their age gap. however, this was also around the time that stefan married his first wife. being nine years younger than both stefan and his wife, he never truly got to know the queen outside of formalities. in fact, he was more interested in his niece and nephew than the queen herself. of course, his brother then met eliya lynesse. when eliya came into power, aries resented her for a brief period of time. he knew for a fact that kylla hadn't done anything wrong but somehow stefan had managed what should've been an impossible feat. but eventually aries grew to like eliya. the two were of the same age and aries grew to feel connected to her and their relationship was similar to that between a brother and sister. of course, she died five years into her reign and stefan married erina raelyn that same day.

now, what is there to say of erina? well, aries never did connect to her and he never understood her once. he neither liked nor disliked erina although he did miss her once she was gone. however, during the time erina and stefan were married, aries also married. at the age of twenty-four, aries married his friend, a minor noble by the name of hylla delcourt. she was twenty-three at the time and very beautiful. she was meant to wed the son of a minor lord but it was painfully obvious to aries that she didn't want to. aries had always believed you should marry someone you love, after all, wouldn't anyone rather be alone than marry someone they don't love? and though aries wasn't interested in hylla in a romantic or sexual sense, he did love her as a friend. so, he proposed to her. he told her it would work out for the both of them. people would stop pushing him to marry and she wouldn't have to marry someone she'd only met once. at first, hylla was hesitant until aries explained that he wasn't interested in her that way. so, she accepted and they married out of convenience.

shortly after their marriage, aries caught hylla with her secret girlfriend and though it was initially shocking, aries really should've seen it coming. of course, aries had no issue with it and he told her she could continue the affair as long as she kept it a secret from others. throughout their two-year marriage, they had a very uncomplicated relationship. however, shortly after their two-year anniversary, hylla contracted a rare illness and died of it shortly after getting it. aries and hylla's girlfriend grieved together, having become friends throughout the years.

then, a year later, erina died in childbirth and stefan remarried. at twenty-seven, aries had no interest in getting to know meira rayne but she was both intelligent and kind so he eventually did become friends with her. of course, she was executed two years later and stefan married his fifth wife. kathryn was quite different from meira. aries never quite understood her either. she was youthful, vivacious, and fun but that never appealed to aries. having recognized a pattern with stefan, aries steered clear of kathryn for a few months. however, aries sensed that stefan likes kathryn in a way he hadn't even loved erina or eliya. perhaps it was because she was still new but aries felt certain that she would be the last. of course, kathryn was quite a bit younger so aries never got to know her well but they spoke from time to time. despite her occasionally air-headed behavior, aries came to learn that she wasn't as dim as he'd originally expected. but then kathryn was executed a year into her reign and months later, stefan married zarya agnaris.

in several ways, zarya was like kathryn but she struggled more to contain her nerves. she was intelligent enough to know that she would likely die the same way most of the king's other wives had died and for that he pitied her. however, they were never close and only shared words when need be. towards the end of her reign, however, zarya seemed paranoid. it was completely warranted though, being married to stefan could do that to anyone. then, on their third year of marriage, zarya was sentenced to die like many of the others and here we are today, the day of the execution and the day of the wedding.

• aries very much prefers his sister to his brother. it's no competition, really.
• aries, by nature, was always closest to his brother's fourth wife due to their similar natures.
• aries only knows he's biromantic due to the fact that he had a young crush on a girl named myriana when he was fourteen and then another crush on a boy named florent when he was sixteen and those who came later, of course.
• he knows several other languages from other kingdoms but is much better at reading them than speaking them.
