Samuel is the oldest child of James 'Jim'
and Diane Hopper, after the death of his younger sister Sara and his parents divorcing and moving back to his fathers hometown in Hawkins, short after Samuel and his father moving back to Hawkins he had witness his father drinking and drug use, and his father sleeping with woman who was a few years younger than him.

After a few years later and settling in Hawkins, Samuel meets a girl called Nancy Wheeler the two got close pretty much quickly you can say the least, shortly after the two had began dating, but then after a few months of dating Samuel had broken up with Nancy. After breaking up with Nancy, Samuel decided to stay with his mother for a few weeks, only to find out she was remarried to someone called Bill and heavily pregnant. This broke Samuel. He shortly followed his father's footsteps in drinking heavily and fighting.
