MADELINE WEATHERS had been a recognizable name throughout Shadyside for the past ten years. The redhead was the beloved cheerleader from the wrong side of the tracks. She was nothing less of sweet and witty, there wasn't one person that didn't admire her. Her peer either wanted to be her or wanted her. Her true heart of gold shined brightly over the constant dark that always loomed over Shadyside. The community was shocked that Shadyside hadn't dimmed her light. While there were perfect opportunities for the town to do that, she just didn't let it.

Having a mom that was deemed "the town whore" wasn't the most ideal thing for a teenage girl to swallow, but it was just the hand that life had dealt her. From the moment that Maddy had turned ten, she had planned on escaping her horrid town as soon as she hit eighteen, she wanted Shadyside in her rearview mirror forever. It wouldn't be long until Shadyside enveloped her in its long-awaited dense darkness and the bright light she appreciated about herself would fade forever.

MAXWELL NORTON swore there was a connection between him and Madeline Weathers. He had known it since the time he accidentally shoved her in second grade when he was trying to catch a football. The moment his eyes met her doleful blue eyes, there was something that set his fire ablaze. Dare he say love at first sight? He sure as hell felt that way, but he absolutely knew for a fact that Maddy didn't feel the same. Maddy lived in her own little world and was oblivious to the boy that tried everything to be next to her. Maddy was one good thing in his life even if she didn't know it.

His home life wasn't ideal, coming home to a drunk father and depressed mom wasn't the best feeling or environment. He tried to be out of the house as much as he could and bouncing between his neighbor Deena Johnson's and long-time friend Simon Kalivoda's house, he was able to attain just that. He needed Maddy to make his life worth living, she and her light showed him the way out of the dark. He'd be damned if he ever let that go.

THE TWO TEENS felt a cosmic pull constantly tugging in the back of their minds and the tragedy, the massacre of Shadyside Mall only pulled them closer together. But the difference about this time is that there's an explanation to the pull that has always felt so familiar yet foreign. They realize that their fate is so much more than just some random teens from Shadyside. Their destiny is so much bigger, they're the key to solving the darkness that has always rained over Shadyside. They're gonna make Shadyside so much more than the murder capital of the USA. And if they die in the process, hey, they'll always get another chance to uncover the truth once again.
