LAST SUMMER

GOOFY SMILES twisted onto the lips of the enigma and her trusty pogue. Small giggles slipped past her lips as the boy tightened his grip on her legs as he carried her on his back. A feeling of bliss ran through her veins, the effects of the multiple beers they downed finally kicking in. A calm summer air blew through the vacant beach, creating a nice breeze that washed over the two buzzed teens.

The boy jokingly made the motion of dropping her from his grip, Kennedy released a small shriek at the movement, further wrapping her arms around the boy's neck, slightly fearing that he would actually drop her. The blond just laughed to himself but soon felt his air being constricted by the tight grip of the Outer Banks enigma, "Sunshine, you're kinda choking me,"

The girl scoffed at the words but nonetheless lessened her grip, "Sorry that I was trying to prevent myself from falling, no thanks to you,"

"You really think I'd drop you? I would never live it down," The boy remarked, making the girl on his back roll her eyes, but her amusement rose when he spoke again, "All I would hear is complaints about how much your ass hurts and how you'll never forgive me,"

Kennedy huffed in mock offense, resting her chin on her arm, mumbling into it, "I wouldn't say that,"

The boy chuckled lightly, "Yeah okay Kenn, sure,"

"Shut up JJ," Kennedy quipped, resting her head on top of his. The two fell into a calm silence as JJ began trudging through the water and he walked them around the beach. "What're we doing tonight?"

"What, this isn't entertaining you enough Sunshine?" The blond questioned, soon hiking her further up his back, so he had a better grip on her legs, "I can mix things up and toss you in the water if you want more excitement,"

The girl gasped lightly at the idea, her eyes turned into teasing slits, "Do that Maybank and I'll pull you right in with me,"

"Alright bet," JJ stated, his voice full of mischief.

Before Kennedy could open her mouth to reply, in one swift motion, she was dropped from his grip and into the cool salty water. The blonde gasped at the sudden frigid water that drenched her clothes. An annoyed glare twisted onto her features as she glanced up through the drenched strands of her blonde locks and straight up at an amused JJ. "I can't fucking believe you, Maybank, "

"Need some help Sunshine?"

The girl scoffed lightly, watching him stretch out his hand to help her up, severely annoyed at the smug and amused look resting on his features. Reaching up, she gripped his hand and pulled with all her might. The boy accidentally slipped, losing his balance, and landed face-first into the water. A loud laugh escaped the girl watching the boy snap up to suck in air.

JJ sent her a frustrated glance as he wiped the water droplets off his face. The look made Kennedy suck her lips into her mouth to stifle the laughter. "You look like you got a little wet there Maybank,"

The boy scoffed loudly, "Yeah no shit,"

Kennedy's heart pounded lightly, seeing the wet strands of his hair dripping onto his forehead. She let a soft smile take over her lips, soon leaning forward to push the hair away from his face. The annoyance that once swirled in his eyes, was replaced with a look of slight shyness. Kennedy's heart clenched at the emotion on his face, and before she could fully move her hand away from the boy, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him. Soon enough, there was barely any space between them and she was practically sitting on his lap. A mischievous smile pulled at his lips making Kennedy let out a shaky breath, "What?"

"I have an idea of what we can do," JJ muttered, focusing on tucking a strand of her damp blonde hair behind her ear.

The girl tilted her head in confusion, wrapping her arms around his neck, "What is it?"

JJ raised his eyebrows in a playful manner, "Ever gotten a tattoo Sunshine?"

Kennedy instantly coiled away, her face flushed with detest, "No JJ, I'd rather not have my mother kill me tomorrow,"

"Oh come on," The boy tried, giving her a knowing look, "You always say you wanna rebel against your mom, getting a tattoo without your mom's permission is like one of the biggest acts of rebellion,"

The blonde sent him a conflicting glance, taking in his words, "JJ, how will we even do tha-"

"I know a guy," JJ interrupted, his words only making her more hesitant, "He does them for real cheap too,"

The girl gave him a look of apprehension, "If you know him then, I definitely don't want one,"

The blond pogue laughed lightly, slapping a hand across his chest in mock offense, "What Sunshine? Are you saying the people I know aren't reputable?"

A knowing look rested on her features, "I think we both know the answer to that question,"

"That's fair," JJ shrugged, but he continued, this time with more enthusiasm, "But this guy is good I swear, trust me on this, he gave my old man all his tats,"

"Why are you pushing this hard?" Kennedy questioned.

The boy gave her a flirty smile, "I just think you'd look hot with a tattoo,"

The blonde sent him an annoyed look, "I'm gonna have to get more drunk for this,"

A small cheer came from JJ, as he watched her stand up from the water, clothes clingy tightly to her body, but he mostly paid attention to the small amused smile pulling at her lips, "That's my girl,"

Kennedy shook her head at the absurdity of the night ahead, eyes never leaving his, "Don't think I'm the only one getting one tonight, you're getting one too bucko,"

The blonde pogue gave her a knowing look, as he stood up from the water himself, "I wouldn't expect anything less, Sunshine,"

NOW

THE MEMORY faded away into the midnight air, a soft sigh slipped past the blonde's lips, her eyes trained on her wrist. The foundation had been scraped away subconsciously, leaving irritated red skin in its wake. A black ink wave swirled across her skin, part of it showing through the scratched streaks of foundation. A pit formed in her stomach the longer her eyes stayed glued to the tattoo, she swallowed, the memory of that night leaving her more overwhelmed. A few tears brimmed in her eyes, slowly trailing down her cheeks, the feelings coming to the surface being too hard to handle.

A burning stare was seared into the side of her head, subconsciously she tensed up at the eyes, sniffling as she wiped away the tears. Turning to the figure, she let out a humorless laugh, "What do you want Maybank? I'm not in the mood for any ridicule right now,"

The blond pogue scoffed in disbelief at her tone, "Jesus Thornton, I was just wondering if you were okay,"

The girl snapped her head to the boy, eyes turning to slits, "Why? Want to get more info on shit you can hold against me?"

"No Jesus," JJ clipped as he found his way to Kennedy's side, soon dropping down next to her. He ignored her skeptical glare, rolling his eyes, "That little scene didn't look too good, I was just wondering what the fuck happened, and if you were good,"

Kennedy gave him a condescending stare, "Why? You worried Maybank? Never expected that from you,"

"Forget I even asked then," JJ scoffed as he jumped up to his feet, he attempted to walk away from her, but he couldn't help himself, "I hope you don't think that little stunt made me jealous, Sunshine,"

The blonde kook sent him a look of astonishment, "Please, not everything's about you Maybank,"

"Oh really?" The pogue questioned, eyes swirling with smugness, "Then why did you kiss that douche?"

Kennedy laughed humorlessly, making her way to her feet to get a clearer look at JJ, "Why did I kiss my boyfriend?"

"Why did you look at me while you did it?" JJ questioned, slowly moving closer to the blonde, eyes filling with a challenging emotion. "That's what I should've asked,"

Lie for your own sake.

"You're seeing things Maybank," Kennedy sighed in a false act of disbelief. She knew he could see right through her, he always could. Kennedy Thornton's lying skills were practically non-existent when it came to JJ Maybank. She hoped he would at least humor her, acting like what she said was true.

"Oh, so you kiss with your eyes wide open?"

"Yeah, what about it?" Kennedy sassed, crossing her arms while she tried her best to act as if she was telling the truth.

JJ's face showed nothing but skepticism as he stared at the small blonde in front of him, "You never did that with me,"

The blonde mentally cursed to herself, but played it off with a small glare resting on her features, "Yeah well, I do it now,"

The Maybank boy laughed at the absurdity of her words, "Just admit you wanted to make me jealous Sunshine,"

"I don't know what you're talking about," Kennedy seethed, rolling her eyes at the words as she shoved past him, she'd rather be at the party than here.

"Thorton wait a minute,"

Before she could get away, a hand caught her wrist. Kennedy glared, attempting to pull her hand away from JJ's grip and into her chest. A feeling of confinement restricted in her chest, getting reminded of what happened with Rafe earlier tonight. The pogue's grip wasn't nearly as tight as Rafe's, but it still made an uncomfortable feeling flow through her veins. JJ's eyes drifted down the wrist he had, the tattoo was clear as day against the paleness of Kennedy's skin.

The dark blue eyes swirled with an emotion Kennedy couldn't quite put her finger on, but it was something that made a familiar feeling bloom in her chest. Once the boy snapped his eyes up to meet hers, he saw the look of shock mixed with fear swirling in her eyes. JJ immediately dropped his arm and a sense of awkwardness washed over the two. With each passing second, the need to run away from this situation was getting stronger and stronger.

"I'm surprised you didn't get the tattoo removed,"

Kennedy blinked in surprise at the question, she paused to look at the ink drawing that he referenced and shrugged lightly, "I'd actually have to tell my mother about the tattoo to let that happen,"

"Does anyone know about the tattoo?"

Kennedy snorted, sending the boy an incredulous glance, "God no, I always cover it up with makeup, the pogues know about yours?"

The boy shrugged but nodded nonetheless, "Yeah, it's kinda hard not for them to know about it, but they just think I got it when I was blackout drunk,"

"That often for you Maybank?" Kennedy questioned, her features filling with curiousness. It wasn't often for her and JJ to get this far in a conversation without wanting to rip each other's throats out. Deep down in the pits of her mind, she wanted to know if he was okay.

"Often enough to make it believable," The words left guilt to bloom in the stomach of Outer Banks enigma, she shut her mouth, not knowing what to say. The boy coughed lightly, attempting to break through the awkwardness, "So uh, does Cameron know about the tattoo?"

Kennedy shook her head, eyes drifting down to her hands, "Of course not, he doesn't need to know anything about last summer,"

"What if it happens to come up in a conversation?"

The blonde kook's gaze snapped to the boy, who sent her a sudden mischievous look, her next words dripping with hatred, "Tell him Maybank, and your life will come to an untimely end,"

"Why do you care so much? You're just using him,"

Kennedy rolled her eyes in anger, the fury slowly burning through her veins, "You don't and won't ever understand why I do the things I do,"

JJ gave her a challenging gaze, eyes filled with arrogance, "You know, Kennedy believe it or not I know more about yourself than you probably do,"

"JJ just because we had a summer fling doesn't mean you know everything about me," Kennedy hissed, her face filled with nothing but frustration.

"That's debatable Sunshine,"

Kennedy sighed, pushing past the boy, knowing she would get nowhere by arguing with him right now, "Whatever JJ, I'm not dealing with this right now, just leave me alone,"

"You're going to forgive him aren't you?"

The words made Kennedy pause, when she turned she gave him a wary glance, "You don't get it JJ,"

"I get that you like to put yourself in these toxic situations," JJ examined, turning to get a better look at her.

"JJ look, I don't like to okay, but it's my life and I don't need input from someone who barely knows me anymore," The words dripped with exhaustion, her eyes swirling with hopelessness, just wishing he would leave her alone about it. "Let's just go back to being awful to each other okay? I'm not in the mood for this stupid fucking heart-to-heart,"

"Fine by me sunshine, good luck with your toxic relationship, don't come running to me when shit hits the fan,"

Kennedy scoffed at the smug tone his words held, turning to face him before she walked off, she gave him a condescending smile, "Trust me Maybank, I wouldn't dream of it,"

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

EYES FOLLOWED the Enigma, trailing her figure, hoping to find some of her resolve cracked, hoping to see an opening of weakness seeping out. But the blonde kept her head held high as she strutted by, her blonde curls bouncing in the midnight breeze. Her hands remained glued to her side, being conscious of the tattoo that would no doubt show off if she shifted her arm. Kennedy scanned around hoping to find one of her best friends. In one fail swoop, her eyes found Riley and Sarah sitting around a fire with a bunch of kooks.

Riley's eyes glanced up from the fire and met hers, with a snap of his fingers a few teens begrudgingly shuffled down to make room for the enigma. With a thankful smile sent to the random teens, she found herself sitting next to Riley. The boy immediately wrapped a comforting arm around Kennedy, "We told Rafe to go home, I knew you probably wouldn't want to deal with him,"

"You thought right," Kennedy remarked, resting her head against Riley's shoulder, eyes watching the flames dance in front of her. "I'm getting tired of this night, when can we leave?"

Riley sent her quick glance before looking toward Sarah and Topper, "Before you came back, we were getting ready to leave but we were waiting for you,"

"Thank god," Kennedy sighed gratefully, a genuine smile finally twitching on her lips, already yearning to be in her bed, her sanctuary. As she got up from the log, she sent Riley a small glance, "Hey are you sleeping over?"

"I wish I could but probably not," Riley huffed, jumping up to his feet, eyes filled with annoyance, "I haven't been home in a few days, I figured I might as well face the wrath of my father sooner or later,"

Kennedy gave him a look of concern, resting a soft hand on his shoulder, "Are you sure you wanna go home? You can totally stay at my house as long as you like,"

"I gotta go home sometime Kenny,"

"I guess,"

"Hey, you guys ready?" The question drifted from Sarah Cameron's mouth, causing the two teens next to turn their attention to her.

"Yeah, let's get outta here," Riley answered, wrapping an arm around safely around Kennedy. The blonde smiled at the action, finding comfort in her best friend's touch.

As the group of kooks began to make their way away from the fire, it was the first time Kennedy could breathe, finally after everything that happened tonight she was able to get away from people's eyes. Kennedy heard the familiar voice of JJ Maybank speak in the distance, but she ignored it, letting Riley lead her away from the chaos that was this night. But of course, Kennedy couldn't get away that easily.

"Hey, hey Kennedy,"

With a bored gaze, she turned to look at the dreaded boy who called her name. Her face twisted into annoyance watching a scheming emotion swirl in his eyes. She could smell the alcohol oozing from his figure, "What do you want?"

The kooks behind her shared a few concerned glances, worried that JJ and Kennedy would get into another brawl. But JJ just sent the blonde in front of him a calculating grin, "Can I interest you in a tasty Milwaukee beverage?"

Kennedy glanced down at the murky, lukewarm liquid in the cup and grimaced, "No thanks,"

"Come on, is it not fancy enough for you?" JJ scoffed, eyeing the group in its entirety.

"No we were just leaving," Kennedy clipped, blue eyes filled with annoyance at the blond pogue.

Her words were barely heard as her brother soon squeezed between Kennedy and Riley to get JJ's attention, "Hey, hey, you know what? I'll take it. Thank you man, I appreciate it,"

"Ah that's nice of you to suggest that Topper, but I didn't ask you," JJ stated, his eyes holding a patronizing glance that made Kennedy's stomach drop. Instead of the boy stopping, he just kept going, "Now if you said pretty please, maybe, but you didn't,"

Topper scoffed at the words, "Oh, pretty please?"

JJ ignored the words, immediately turning his attention to Kennedy, gesturing the drink towards her, "Yeah so Kennedy, you can have it,"

Kennedy opened her mouth to speak and tell JJ to lay off, but Topper was already taking the bait, slapping the drink away from his sister, "She doesn't want it, you pogue,"

In an instant all hell broke loose, Topper was shoved roughly by JJ, and the blond pogue had a look of anger flushing his face. The small action caused a panic to wash into the air. Eyes soon fell on the small scene that erupted, Kennedy already hated it.

Kennedy watched as JJ got pulled back by John B, who was trying to calm him down. The blonde pogue had nothing but hatred resting on his features as he looked towards Topper, "You're so funny, man,"

The blonde kook stood fearfully next to Riley, not knowing what she could do. Her heart began pounding heavily, knowing that it would only escalate further.

"Dirty pogues,"

Those simple words caused the supposed calm and collected John B to jump into action by shoving Topper. Riley grabbed Kennedy's arm pulling her closer to his side, not wanting her to accidentally be caught in the middle of this soon-to-be fight. As Riley predicted, Topper sent a punch straight to John B's jaw, causing the pogue to topple over, a chorus of oh's passed through the forming crowd. Sarah's yells of detest rose over them, wanting them to stop.

A feeling of dread filled Kennedy's stomach, watching Topper kick the pogue into the water, "Hey John B, don't make me drown you like your old man, alright?"

A look of pure anger crossed John B's face as the Thornton boy began walking away. John B jumped up, soon toppling into Topper, ready to give him a taste of his own medicine. The groups of teens cheered them on, while the pogues demanded them to stop completely, something about "being incognito", Kennedy didn't even have time to understand what the hell that meant.

For a moment it looked like John B was gonna win, as Topper kept receiving hit after hit. But as John B charged at him, the Thornton boy flipped him over and dunked his face straight into the water. Panic flooded Kennedy's senses, her arm gripped Riley's tightly, watching her brother practically drown the boy.

"Topper, what the hell are you doing? Fucking stop," Kennedy demanded, her face flushed with anger and fear, worried that her brother would actually kill John B.

Time moved so quickly, that Kennedy could barely keep up with the next actions from the people around her. From Sarah yelling at Topper, JJ was immediately behind Topper. All the air left Kennedy's body watching the glint of a handgun shine in the moonlight. A soft gasp escaped her lips, she was frozen in place.

"Yeah you know what that is," JJ hissed, the clicking of the safety made everyone freeze. The action made Kennedy slap a hand over her mouth in pure shock, blue eyes widened in fear. Who the fuck gave JJ a gun? "Your move Broski,"

People started to scatter when they saw the gun, and instantaneously everyone dashed away, except for the pogues and three kooks who were stuck watching in horror at the scene in front of them. Kennedy could barely breathe, with every breath, her lungs became more constricting. Terror pumped through her veins, afraid of the actions that could transpire. Luckily she wasn't the only one panicked as everyone in the small group around her screamed at the blond pogue to put the gun down, but it all seemed to be ignored by the Maybank Boy.

Normally the blonde enigma would've let everyone else handle this, but the anxiety bubbling in her throat made it impossible for her to do that, "JJ put the fucking gun down,"

The deafening words that slipped from the enigma's mouth caused the boy to glance at her with an arrogant gaze, "Did you say something Sunshine?"

"Put it fucking down,"

The repeated words only made the boy scoff, but before JJ could say something to her, Topper interrupted, hands raised in the air, "We're good, we're good,"

JJ's once-tight grip on the back of Topper's button-up was let go, and the boy stormed past the group. A breath of relief escaped Kennedy, knowing that nothing else was gonna happen. Riley kept a harsh grip on Kennedy, eyes following JJ's movement, knowing he wasn't done yet.

"Okay, everyone listen up! Get the hell off our side of the island!"

The two gunshots were enough to give Kennedy a jumpstart, her heart pounded in her chest at the bangs that the gun let off. She didn't have enough time to think of her next movements before she was dragged along with a horrified Riley's hurried movements. With each pump of her heart, her feet moved a pace faster. She had no idea how it escalated this quickly, but all she knew was that she never wanted to see a gun in the hands of JJ Maybank ever again.

That was bad news and she didn't like it one bit.
