{Part II} ~✦~ Chapter XXI

Steven had been feeling a lot of different things over the course of the past ten months since the whole injector incident.

For one, he was tired. Then again, who wouldn't be? When a gem from space comes to Earth to kill you (again), it can basically drain everything out of you. And then there would be the fact that the gems had gotten rejuvenated, and that he had to climb a giant machine to stop the Earth from dying more than it already had at that point.

So, yeah. He felt pretty tired.

However, he also felt a little angry. That gem, the one who had come to kill him, was a product of what his mother had done in the past, and that upset him because that specific gem—the one who had nearly killed him and all organic life on Earth. . .

. . . That gem was the very gem he had fallen for.

Which leads us to the third thing Steven had been feeling over the past months: heartbreak.

The gem—whose name was actually (Y/n)—had seemingly vanished out of nowhere; just when Steven was planning on confessing to her.

To say that he just 'cried' the night after her disappearance was an understatement.

But Steven still managed to smile for his family. He was still upset, yes, but not as bad as the first month of (Y/n)'s disappearance.

He had Lunar to keep him sane after all.

Steven was unsure about being a. . . a 'dad' at first, honestly. After all, he had never really taken care of a baby before, so was he really fit for the job?

The answer to that question appeared to be yes.

After a few weeks, Steven had grown very attached to the baby. The gems, Greg, and Connie would almost always see him playing with the small babe. And if not, then he would be sleeping on the couch with Lunar napping on his belly.

(Connie took pictures, of course. After all, what are friends for?)

Aside from all of that, though, Steven was still heartbroken; no matter what he did. He tried hanging out with his friends, going to the arcade, and even visited Spinel and The Diamonds on Homeworld. But still, one thought continued to haunt him the whole time:

"She's somewhere out there; waiting for you."

Steven had woken up in the middle of the night, gasping and drenched in sweat, the first time he had heard those words. It confused him at first. What did it mean? He had asked Garnet, to see if she could make any sense of it, but all she did was readjust her visors and tell him that he had to figure it out for himself; that it was time for him to deal with his own problems instead of others.

That only confused Steven more, however.

"Any idea what's happening to me, Lion?" Steven asked his animal companion for about the fourth time.

Lion only yawned in response and rested his head on his front paws before dozing back off into his peaceful slumber. Steven sighed at this and turned to look back up at the stars. Some were small, some were large, and others just shined brighter than the rest.

"Abababa!" Steven blinked and turned his head to the side; only to break out into a fit of laughter at the sight.

Lunar—wearing a pale blue onesie that had a yellow star at the center of it, similar to Steven's shirt—was currently trying to climb to the top of Lion's mane to sleep in it; like he always did most of the time.

Key word: trying.

As of right now, the young babe was sitting on a very annoyed looking Lion's snout, gurgling as he reached for one of Lion's ears and giggled.

"Wion!" Lunar shouted as the animal huffed, making Lunar fall back off of his snout out of surprise and hit the floor.

.

.

.

"WAAAAAAAAHH!!" Steven's eyes widened and he quickly stood up and picked the crying baby up into his arms.

"Shhh, Lunar! Shhhhh! Hey, hey, hey, calm down. Papa's here. . ." Steven cooed gently into Lunar's ear as he placed a small kiss on the baby's nose (while also sending a small dirty look to Lion, who only went back to sleep).

When Lunar didn't stop crying, Steven sighed and looked back up towards the night sky. He didn't know how, but (Y/n) somehow managed to take care of Lunar by herself and not go insane. To Steven, that was impressive.

"Steven!" Blinking, Steven whirled around and soon came face-to-face with Pearl; who had a look of worry on her face. "Is everything okay? I heard Lunar cry and—" The pale gem was cut off by Steven; who chuckled and shook his head. "No, Pearl, everything's fine. Lunar was just trying to climb into Lions mane and ended up falling, he's fine though." Steven gave his one of many mother figures a comforting smile and Pearl sighed with relief as she walked over to join Steven and the crying baby in his arms.

"Well, that's good to know," Pearl said, standing before the gem-hybrid and looking down at Lunar. Pearl frowned and the baby's tears, and held her arms out to Steven. "Would you like me to take care of him tonight? You need to get some sleep, too, Steven." Pearl said.

Steven hummed and looked down at Lunar, and then sighed. As much as he wanted to help with the small baby as well, he had grown pretty tired over the past months (as said before). Nodding, he looked up and Pearl and smiled as he handed Lunar over to her.

"Thanks Pearl," Steven said with a yawn, making Pearl giggle. "It's fine, now go to bed. Remember, Spinel's visiting tomorrow." Pearl told.

Steven nodded and ran his fingers through Lion's mane. "Yeah, I know." He looked up and sent Pearl one last smile.

"Good night, Pearl."

Pearl smiled as well and readjusted her hold on Lunar before sending Steven a small wave. "Good night, Steven."

And with that, Steven walked down the stairs, into his room, and jumped onto his bed; falling asleep instantly and letting the world fade out around him.
