Chapter V

"Well, isn't this entertaining?" You asked yourself with a chuckle as you watched the human try to pull his laundry out of Pearl's hands. You then yawned and turned over, laying down on your back as you watched the dark clouds in the sky pass over you boredly.

"Man, Earth is pretty boring. . ." You muttered, sitting up and stretching your arms before jumping off of the roof you had been hiding on and flying up into the air.

"What to do, what to do. . ." You clicked your tongue and did a flip in the sky as you thought of a way to get rid of your boredom while you waited for that human— Steven to come.

"I could always go check on him. . ." You shook your head at the thought and sighed. "Nah. Him or one of his 'friends' will probably spot me. I can't get poofed again, it takes too long for me to regenerate." You said as you gave a strong flap of your wings; causing you to go flying off quickly, leaving nothing but a large gust of wind to knock back clouds behind you.

"Let's see. . ." You looked down at the Earth, spotting a couple of humans every now and then, but you ignored all of them.

Well. . . almost all of them.

As you flew over a forest, something caught your eye: a decently sized basket, with a bundle in it, floating down a stream. You hummed and tapped your chin in thought. "Isn't that what humans call. . . a baby. . .?" You muttered questionably.

You then shrugged and looked back forwards. All it was was a small human, so it wasn't really all that fascinating to you. You were about to fly away, whenever something sounded in your ears:

The baby's crying.

You stopped midair and slowly looked over your shoulder, down to the child. The basket that the baby was resting in was now stuck in between two, large rocks. The child cried and cried as you watched with wide eyes as two, green serpents began to slither near it.

You huffed and frowned.

I don't care. . . You thought to yourself as you turned away and crossed your arms, unaware of the fact that your gem was beginning to glow slightly.

"I don't care." You whispered under your breath firmly, glancing back over to the baby.

It was then, at that very moment, that time seemed to stop.

The baby, they was staring at you with one look that you were all-too familiar with as the snakes slithered closer to it:

Please, don't leave me. . .

And with that, you snapped.

Expanding your wings, you dived down quickly and snatched the baby out of the basket; just when one of the snakes had jumped at it to take a bite. You huffed and panted as you landed on the thick branch of a tree; your eyes wide with beads of sweat falling from your face.

"What did I just do?" You whispered, shocked at your own actions.

And then, something tugged your hair, and you looked down at the small baby in your arms.

They were smiling at you. A smile that you had never, not once in your life, had seen before. A gummy smile, with no teeth, and a snotty nose mixed in with fat tears.

This child was happy that you were here.

You stayed silent for awhile. Just staring at the child as they continued to babble in some language unknown to you while also playing with your hair and laughing.

Laughing.

Giggling.

Smiling.

.

.

.

"No one has ever done that for me in a long time. . ." You whispered, tears falling from your face as you crouched down and hugged the child close; burying your face in their belly as they continued to babble, not knowing how happy they had made you at that very moment.

"Maybe. . ." You mumbled, lifting your face up from the baby's belly and sitting down, allowing your feet to dangle from the tree.

"I'll keep you." You whispered, a small smile appearing on your face.

And the child laughed.
