Chapter IX

"Come on, Lunar, what's wrong?" You asked your crying baby boy as you rocked him back and forth in your arms in a(n) desperate attempt to get him to go to sleep.

"WAAAH!" Was his response.

You sighed and looked down. Gems don't get tired, yes, but. . . raising a child was honestly the most challenging thing yet. Even though your gem type was specifically used for caring for young, it was still pretty hard. Not only that, you didn't really have a 'young' gemling to care for since 6,000 years ago. . . if you get what I mean. . .

Blowing a strand of hair out of your face, you looked out of the mouth of the cave you were staying in. The once pale, blue sky was now a dark blue. Instead of clouds, stars now coated the skies. And now, of course, the moon had fully replaced the sun. The moons shining rays slipped past the cracks of leaves above in the trees, causing strange shadows to form at the caves entrance. Near you, you could hear the running water of the stream outside near the large weeping willow that had grown atop the very cave you stood in.

Earth really is beautiful. . . sometimes. But, knowing of the fact that she abandoned you and Spinel for this planet for 6,000 years. . . you didn't really plan on sparing it any time soon. . .

.

.

.

That's what you thought, at least.

But then, you met Steven. And then you saved Lunar, and took him in. And after that, you found this very cave, and you were now questioning whether you should go through with your little 'revenge' plan.

At first, it sounded good. Take care of the Crystal Gems, kill Pink's son, and ha-HA! You win!

Now that you thought about it though. . . was it all really worth it.

I mean, Steven hadn't really done anything 'wrong' to you. In fact, he tried talking it out with you before you even started the fight. It was his mother that abandoned you and Spinal, so why were you even taking all of your anger out on him?

That, you didn't even have the answer to.

Bitterness, maybe? Anger? Sadness? I mean, it could be all three rolled into one with a side of revenge.

Yeah, that seemed about right.

You sighed and looked down at Lunar, who was still crying, and then you frowned.

Where would we even go? You thought to yourself, hugging the crying baby closer to your chest as your shoulders went stiff.

Lunar wasn't a gem; he was a human. If you took him out into space with you after the Earth's destruction, then he would. . . he would. . .

You shook your head at the thought and blinked when you noticed that your son's cries seemed to have gotten louder. Groaning, you began check off everything you had done so far to try to get Lunar to stop crying:

Feed him? Check.

Burp him? Check.

Change him? Oh yeah. That's a definite check.

Bathe him? Check.

And. . . that's pretty much all that it usually took to make a baby go to sleep. What else could there be? Was he still hungry? Did he need another change (God, you hoped he didn't)? Or maybe-

.

.

.

"Maybe. . ." You looked down at the crying baby and walked out of the cave before opening your wings and flying over to the weeping willow tree.

Once you were close enough, you landed, just in front of the stream that sat in front of the large tree. After quickly hopping across a few rocks in the water to not get wet and to ensure that your son wouldn't catch a cold from its freezing temperatures, you landed on the soft, light green grass that surrounded the willow tree and walked under it.

"Ababa?" And just like that, Lunar stopped crying. The sight of fireflies and the large tree that was towering before him must have really caught his attention.

"Like it?" You asked with a giggle. Lunar gave you a gummy smile and laughed adorably as he began to reach his small hands out to try to grab the glowing bugs flying around the two of you. He kept failing, yes, but he didn't seem to care.

At seeing your son happy and calm, you took this as an opportunity to get him to go to sleep. And what better way to get a human and/or gemlings to succumb to sweet, blissful slumber?

You sing, of course.

Look to the stars, my darling baby boy. . .

Life is strange and vast,

Filled with wonders and joys. . .

Lunar immediately fell silent at the sound of your sweet, gentle and caring voice. The small babe listened to you carefully as he looked up at you; smiling down at him with a look of happiness in your eyes, and the light of the pale moon illuminating your gentle and beautiful features.

Lunar rested the side of his head against your shoulder and continued to listen.

Face each new sun with eyes clear and true,

Unafraid of the unknown,

Because I'll face it all with you. . .

Lunar yawned as you readjusted his fluffy blanket around him and kissed his forehead, the same, gentle smile on your face as you continued.

Look to the stars and gaze up at the moon,

Even as these days pass,

I'm always thinking of you. . .

You hadn't noticed, but the cool, night breeze had begun to blow. Stirring the leaves around you and causing the grass below your feet to sway gently with the breeze, the winds had caught your silky locks of (F/c) hair and began to blow through it all as you began to gently rock Lunar back and forth.

Face each new day and keep your hope alive,

I promise I will be their soon,

It won't be long 'til I'm with you. . .

Slowly, you opened the eyes you didn't even know you had closed, and you were greeted with the sight of Lunar snoring softly in your arms; sound asleep.

You sighed and smiled softly before placing a gentle kiss upon Lunar's head.

"I love you, my son." You whispered as you turned your gaze towards the starry sky.

.

.

.

.

"And I love this planet, too. . ." You whispered, frowing as you turned your gaze over to your injector. The giant machine was easy to spot, of course, due to the bright, pink light of the poison illuminating from it.

It was then, however, that you realized something else.

"I. . ." An image of a certain person flashed through your mind, and you hugged Lunar closer.

"I think I might love him, as well. . ." You whispered as your face began to grow warm.

You got no response to your small confession. Instead, all that you were met with was the whispering winds and the rippling droplets of water that had fallen from a random leaf and into the stream before you.

And that's all you were met with:

Silence.

.

.

.

But then. . . something in the back of your mind began to whisper to you - to tell you that-

"It's a beautiful night. . . and I think someone would like to fly with you."

And then, as always, you opened your wings and took off into the night sky. It was nice, at first, with just the calming breeze of the night running through your hair and tickling your skin. Brushing your hands through the fluffy clouds that had decided to pass by through the night, and flying with the occasional flock of birds every now and then.

It was all good and fun, but then. . .

Then. . .

.

.

.

Then you crashed into someone, and they didn't seem too familiar until you saw something; something specific:

The rose quartz gem that sat in the very center of their stomach.
