Chapter II

Steven watched with wide eyes filled with horror as his friends' gems fell to the ground. The mysterious gem chuckled at his expression, catching his attention and making him look up at her as her chuckling turned into full blown laughter.

"What's the matter, Stevie~" The gem asked, leaning forwards, holding her scythe behind her back as she tilted her head to the side 'innocently'.

Steven took a step back as the gem chuckled again. "Miss your friends already, eh?" The gem asked as she stood up and placed her weapon over her shoulders, a taunting smirk on her face.

She then grinned darkly. "Well, don't worry, dove," The gem took her scythe off of her shoulders and twirled it around her wrist.

"You're right behind 'em!" She cried out as she opened her wings and flew over to Steven; crashing into him and causing him to cry out.

Steven grunted and summoned his shield. "That's enough!" He yelled out, only for his determined expression to turn into one of shock once he saw his shield flicker before completely disappearing.

"W-What—" He was cut off when he suddenly felt something slice through him. He gasped, feeling a slight pain shoot through his chest, before looking down. Pink lines traced throughout his body, before leaving without a trace. Steven laughed and placed his hands on his hips confidently.

"Ha ha ha! That was nothing!" He said, beads of sweat falling from his face.

His confidence began to fade once he saw the gem smirk once again.

"Oh, really?" The gem stuck the long handle of the scythe in the ground, the flickering bolts of electricity coming from the scythes blade illuminating her face.

It was then Steven realized how oddly captivating her eyes were.

"Well, then I guess you won't mind if I do it again!" She called out before running towards Steven. She flared her wings at him, making shadows cover his face as she began to slice through his body over and over again. One after another, it never seemed to stop until Steven finally stepped forward and grabbed her hands; stopping her from swinging the scythe in the process.

The two were now face to face, with their faces being only inches apart. The gem had a taunting smirk on her face, and a mocking look flashing through her eyes while Steven glared at her and gritted his teeth; growing tired with each passing second of their small fight to get the scythe out of the others grasp.

Steven clenched his teeth and took a forced step forward, causing the gem to step back. His brows furrowed, and the gems lifted up in amusement.

"Cut it out!" He ordered, his hold on the scythes handle tightening.

The gem rose a brow and gave Steven a confused look, before letting her face return to its usual taunting smirk.

"You don't poof, do you?" The gem hummed. She then sighed, almost as if she was expecting it, which. . . "I figured as much." . . . It appeared she was.

The gem then grinned and leaned her face closer to Steven's; causing the human-gem hybrids eyes to widen as he leaned back, a hint of light pink on his cheeks, but he still frowned and narrowed his eyes at her. "Just you wait!" She began as she tilted her head to the side, an insane look in her eyes. "Your human half won't stand a chance against my injector. Especially after what I just did to your gem~" She mocked in a sing-songy voice.

Steven grunted and pulled on the scythe, causing the gem to stumble forwards closer to him; their chests were almost touching, but neither of them seemed to notice. "What are you talking about?" Steven questioned, growing more and more confused by the second.

The gem smirked and leaned over to him, placing her chin on his shoulder as she whispered into his ear,

"You weren't always a powerful hero, were you?"

Steven's eyes widened; not just at what she had said, but at how close she was to him now. He quickly blinked and shook his head, snapping out of it before pushing the gem off of him and pulling the scythe out of her grasp. She laughed crazily, making Steven stare at her as if she were insane.

The boy shut his eyes tightly, doing his best to drown out the crazy gems laughter, before lifting up the scythe, swinging it, and slicing the gem in half.

And when he heard a 'poof', and the sound of something hitting the ground, he opened his eyes once again, and let out a tired sigh as he fell to his knees.

The boy then suddenly shot up, his back straightening when he felt some sudden sensation in his body. The pink lines that were once going throughout his body, were now gone, leaving the boy tired and confused.

Steven sighed and placed the scythe to the side; he would find out what to do with it later. But, for now. . .

"Better bubble you before anything else happens. . ." Steven muttered, looking down at the gem— gems?

Wait, was she a FUSION?? Steven thought to himself as he stared down at the two gems in front of him. One of them was in the shape of a heart, with a large crack in the center of it. It was a dark shade of pink, and there seemed to be small bolts of light electricity leaving the gems crack.

Turning to the other gem, Steven saw that it was a dark shade of (F/c). It was in the shape of what seemed to be a. . . butterfly. . .? Steven picked the gem up and turned it over, seeing if it had a crack as well, only to find out that it was in perfectly good condition. The teenage boy hummed and tapped his chin in thought. Could the cracked gem be the reason that she was bad? Maybe the cracked gem was corrupted or something? Steven frowned and turned to the heart-shaped gem before picking it up. He stuck his finger in his mouth, before placing it against the gems crack in an attempt to heal it.

. . . It didn't work. . .

Steven's eyes widened. "W-What. . .?!" He whispered. He frowned and placed the (F/c) gem down on his lap, and picked the heart-shaped one up and attempted to bubble it. It worked, for a few seconds, until the pink bubble around the gem suddenly popped, and the heart-shaped gem fell on Steven's lap with the (F/c) one.

Steven's frown deepened and his brows furrowed. He tapped the heart-shaped gem, before taking it off of his lap and placing it on the ground in front of him. He stared at it for a bit, before placing both of his hands on it; attempting to bubble it again.

And, again, it didn't work.

"Where's my bubble?" Steven asked aloud, narrowing his eyes. He then picked the heart-shaped gem up and held it in between his hands. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, trying to concentrate.

"Come on. . ." He muttered, trying to summon his bubble. He sat there like that, sweat beginning to form on his forehead, when a bubble began to form. Steven grunted and shut his eyes tighter. If he could just keep this up for a bit longer. . .

.

.

.

POP! Steven dropped the gem and fell forward, keeping himself from falling on his face by quickly catching himself with his hands. Sweat fell from his face as he panted, tired. He then lifted his shirt up and looked at his gem to see if anything was wrong with it, only to see the pink gemstone flickering; looking as if it were slowly losing its power.

Steven panted and fell onto his back, staring up at the dark sky while he held the butterfly-shaped gem close to his heart, a troubled expression on his face.

". . . What's going on?"
