You followed Spinel through the snowy path of the woods. She had just left the Ruins, where Blue Diamond lived, and was now DETERMINED to get to Yellow Diamond and convince her to let her go home.
"What's the point of leaving, anyway? Your parents abandoned you at home to go wherever just this morning. Where do you plan to go after you escape the Under-Universe?" You asked her, appearing out of nowhere behind her and floating next to her head.
Spinel stopped. She looked down and began to play with her fingers, growing nervous as her lips quivered. "U-Um, well, I was thinking about going back home! Maybe they just. . . left me on accident. . ." She said the last part slowly, growing sadder and sadder by the second.
You blanked at her and crossed your arms, floating in front of her and crossing your legs as well. "They left you. . . on 'accident'?" You scoffed and turned away from her, huffing. "Give me a break. Those terrible people that you call your 'parents' are nothing but sad idiots who couldn't remember to use protection in bed," You stated, leaning closer to Spinel and placing your hands on your hips.
Spinel frowned and clenched her fists, puffing her cheeks out in a pout as she gave you a small glare. "You don't know that!" She said before walking past— I mean through you.
You rolled your eyes and followed after her, clicking your tongue when you saw tears building up in the corners of her eyes. You stared at her for a bit, and sighed when you noticed that her shoulders were beginning to tremble.
"Hey, listen," You flew in front of her once again and took her face in your hands, making her quickly blink away her tears and look up at you; seeing as how she didn't want you to see her cry. "I know that I'm too straightforward at times, and I apologize for that. But let's face it, you would be dead by now if it weren't for me, so I suggest you suck it up buttercup; because things are gonna get way harder down here. . ." You leaned your face closer to hers, and narrowed your eyes. "Understand?"
Spinel sniffled and nodded, making you nod yourself before releasing her face from your grasp and floating away, placing your hands on your hips. "Good. Now, let's get going. We ain't gonna make it to the castle by just standing here." You said.
*(Y/n)'s words echo throughout your head. Her advice fills you with DETERMINATION!
Spinel smiled, perking up. She looked up at you, her heart-shaped pigtails bouncing with her movements, and nodded as she gave a you a thumbs up before continuing her way down the path; leaving you to roll your eyes at her actions, but still give a small smile nonetheless.
"So," You began, catching up to her. "What're you gonna do once we finally get to Yellow Diamond?" You asked, tilting your head slightly.
Spinel stopped for a moment and tapped her chin in thought. She then snapped her fingers and turned to you, opening her mouth to say something when you cut her.
"If you say that you're just just gonna talk to her, then you're out of your mind. She's killed six kids, Spinel." You crossed your arms and furrowed your brow, looking away from her once again. "And you could be the seventh on the list. . ."
Spinel frowned, fear suddenly beginning to eat at her alive.
So much so, that she didn't seem to notice that she had come across a gate.
You cleared your throat, snapping her out of her little state. She blinked and rubbed her eyes, looking up to the wooden gate before her that blocked her way across the bridge.
Spinel tilted her head to the side and placed her finger against her cheek, examining the bridge curiously while you glanced around; narrowing your eyes at the shadows made by the woods. It was just a. . . a feeling. A feeling of. . .
Being watched—
SNAP!
You and Spinel tensed. You looked down at the path, only to see a stick snapped in half, barely sticking out of the shadows. You felt your eyes dilate and you growled, baring your fangs as you looked around for any signs of danger.
And then the sound of crunching snow was heard.
Spinel's shoulders stiffened while you growled again, rolling your hands into fists and getting into a battle stance.
Spinel sniffled, holding back tears out of fear. Having heard her, you turned around, to. . . comfort her, I guess. You placed a hand on her shoulder and began to whisper words of encouragement and comfort in her ears, and the footsteps grew closer.
And closer, and closer, and closer. . .
.
.
.
.
.
"Human."
You and Spinel froze.
"Don't you know how to greet a new pal?"
You felt someone's breath on your neck, and you went tense. You were invisible; a ghost, yes, but that didn't mean that you were. . . fine with something — someone being so. . . so close to you.
You took a shaky breath and drew your lips into a thin line, trying to calm down as Spinel shook with fear next to you; the two of you sweating nervously.
"Turn around and shake my hand."
You flew up over Spinel's head as she slowly turned around to face the mysterious stranger. He wore a hood over his head, casting a shadow over his face to prevent his features from being seen.
Spinel inhaled sharply and did her best to not show any signs of fear, only to fail miserably as she slowly lifted her hand up to take the strangers.
You flew next to her, hissing at her to run away from him, to NOT trust a complete stranger she met in the middle of a snow-covered, shadowy FOREST!
She ignored you, however, and took his hand anyway.
It was all silent.
That is, until a. . . sound was heard.
A sound that you facepalmed so hard at that you could feel the Earth shake under your intense annoyance and disappointment.
"Heheh. . . the old whoopee cushion in the hand trick. It's ALWAYS funny." The figure chuckled as he pulled his hood off, letting his fluffy brown locks loose.
Your eyes widened when you saw him, honestly. Your face reddened a bit and you looked away from him, crossing your arms and huffing.
The stranger then took a step towards Spinel and looked at her, taking in her features before chuckling again and stepping back; stuffing his hands into his jackets pockets.
"Anyways, you're a human, right? That's hilarious." The stranger shrugged, grinning lazily. He seemed tall enough, just a few inches taller than you. He had brown, curly hair (as mentioned before), and light skin. His eyes were the color of obsidian, though they had a lighty pink tint to them. He wore a pink jacket, with white fluff sewn onto his hood, and a black shirt with a yellow star in the center of it, as well as a pair of blue jeans. To top it all off, he wore a pair of fluffy, red slippers.
You blinked when he began to speak again; snapping you out of your own thoughts.
The stranger — whose name will soon be revealed — pointed to himself with his thumb. "I'm Steven." He winked. "Steven Universe."
The stranger— I mean Steven looked away from Spinel and into the woods, scratching the back of his neck. "I'm actually supposed to be on the watch for humans right now," He told nonchalantly with a shrug as he turned back to face Spinel, who went tense as soon as those words left his mouth.
You frowned and floated closer to Spinel protectively.
Steven chuckled again, noticing the fear flashing through Spinel's eyes for a second. "But. . . y'know. . . I don't really capturing anybody." He shrugged again and gave Spinel a wink, along with a reassuring grin.
Spinel smiled slightly and hugged herself, feeling her nerves ease at Steven's actions.
"Now my friend, Peridot. . ." Steven began, rubbing the back of his hand as he glanced away from Spinel, who grew tense once again out of fear about what Steven was about to tell her.
"She's a human-hunting FANATIC." The brunette stated nonchalantly with another shrug of his shoulders.
Spinel gasped quietly and hugged herself tighter as you sent this 'Steven Universe' a glare. If he was trying to make her feel better, he sure had a funny way of doing it.
Steven then snapped his gaze over to you, and you froze. He seemed to stare at you for a hours as your face went pale(r) and you gulped; growing nervous.
That was until he finally said something that made you realize he was staring through you:
"Hey, actually, I think that's her over there." Steven looked past Spinel's shoulder and then looked back at her, grinning that stupid (but lovable) grin of his.
"I have an idea," Steven pointed towards the gate, making you and Spinel look over to it. "Go past this gate thingy." He said, making both yours and Spinel's eyes widen in shock as she whipped her head back around to face him.
Steven only chuckled ag her reaction. "Yeah, go right through. Peri made the bars too wide to stop anyone." He told with yet another shrug.
Spinel hesitated, but nodded. She slowly turned around, sending a few nervous glances to Steven from over her shoulder, before walking through the gate and across the bridge.
Much to your annoyance.
You growled under your breath and muttered inaudible things as you floated past Steven, who followed after Spinel.
Though, you couldn't help but feel as though a pair of eyes were watching you as you flew past the teenager in a pink jacket. But, you just shrugged it off. You got that feeling most of the time anyway, even before Spinel fell.
Anyways, the two (three, counting you) now stood in front of a small, wooden stand, which was placed next to a lamp that. . . was oddly shaped a whole lot like Spinel.
You didn't know whether to laugh or feel disturbed by that fact.
CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH!
Once again, there was the sound of snow crunching; indicating that someone was walked over. Spinel soon began to panic, and you floated down next to her to calm her down, when Steven suddenly placed his hand on her shoulder and pushed her towards the lamp.
"Quick, behind that conveniently-shaped lamp." He said, pointing toward the said object.
Spinel nodded and quickly ran behind it and hid, with you soon joining her. As you and Spinel sat behind it, you crossed your arms and frowned in thought. This guy. . . you weren't sure whether you could trust him or not. He seemed alright, yes, but this was the Under-Universe: home to some of the most terrifying gems to have ever existed. Who knows what game he could be playing.
You hummed and peaked over the lamp to look at him, when something unexpected happened:
You both locked eyes.
At first you thought that he was just staring through you, like last time, but after a while, you soon realized that he actually was looking at you. For example, whenever you would move your head to the side, his eyes would follow your movement; which shocked you at first.
And that's all the two of you did: stare at eachother.
Until a certain, green gem suddenly ran in, making you quickly join Spinel; even though the green gem couldn't really see you, you still felt am urge to hide with the young girl trembling next to you.
Unknowing to you, as you were trying to comfort Spinel from your hiding place, Steven had frowned for a split second. He didn't know why, but whenever he saw you disappear behind the lamp with Spinel, he blinked and his heart dropped a little.
Steven was quick to snap out of it and return to his normal attitude, however, whenever Peri (Peridot) ran up to him.
" 'Sup, Peri?" Steven asked the gem, who huffed at his words as she placed her hands on her hips.
"YOU KNOW WHAT 'SUP' STEVEN!" She yelled out, pointing an accusing finger at him, being as dramatic as usual as Steven chuckled.
"IT'S BEEN EIGHT DAYS AND YOU STILL HAVEN'T. . ." Peridot paused for dramatic effect.
"RECALIBRATED. YOUR. TRAPS!" Peridot stomped her foot and gestured an arm towards the small stand. "YOU JUST HANG AROUND OUTSIDE YOUR STATION!" Peridot crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at the gem-hybrid that stood before her. "WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING?!?" She questioned, now placing her hands onto her hips as she tilted her head to the side and frowned.
Steven chuckled once more and jabbed his thumb towards the lamp, where Spinel (and you) was hiding. "Staring at this lamp. It's really cool. Do you wanna look?" Steven cocked a brow playfully at the green gem, who frowned and soon began to stomp her foot like a child who was throwing a tantrum whenever they didn't get that toy that they wanted from the store.
"NO! I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT!! WHAT IF A HUMAN COMES THROUGH HERE?!?" Peridot basically screamed, making you cringe and cover your ears.
"I WANT TO BE READY!!! I WILL BE THE ONE! I MUST BE THE ONE! I WILL CAPTURE A HUMAN!" Peridot then stopped stomping her foot and did a heroic pose; her green cape somehow flowing behind her dramatically, even though the wind wasn't even blowing that hard.
"THEN, I, THE GREAT PERIDOT, WILL GET ALL THE THINGS I UTTERLY DESERVE!" Peridot placed a hand over her chest and looked up towards the rocky-ceiling with stars in her eyes as she lifted her other fist into the air dramatically for added effect; it almost looked as if the background behind her had become sparkly.
"RESPECT. . . RECOGNITION. . ." Peridot began to jump in her place excitedly. "I WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO JOIN THE ROYAL GUARD!" Peridot then clasped her hands together and sighed dreamily. "GEMS WILL ASK, TO, BE MY, FRIEND?" Peridot grinned and pointed towards Steven, smirking. "I WILL BATHE IN A SHOWER OF KISSES EVERY MORNING." She stated, her eyes sparkling as she grinned and began to daydream about her 'future'.
Steven, though, was quick to ruin her 'moment'.
"Hmm. . ." Steven tapped his chin, looking as if he were in thought, before grinning and nodding towards the lamp. "Maybe this lamp will help you." He said nonchalantly as Spinel went stiff, her eyes widening.
Your frown deepened and you crossed your arms, peaking over the lamp a small bit to send Steven a glare. He didn't seem to notice, though.
But then again, why would he?
Peridot huffed and began to stomp her foot again. "STEVEN!! YOU ARE NOT HELPING!! YOU CLOD!!" Peridot shouted, sending Steven a small glare.
The green gem then crossed her arms and leaned forwards a bit, narrowing her eyes at Steven. "ALL YOU DO IS SIT AROUND AND PLAY THAT UKULELE OF YOURS!! YOU GET LAZIER AND LAZIER EVERY DAY!!!" Peridot claimed, pouting.
Steven chuckled and lifted his hands up beside his head in a defensive way. "Hey, take it easy. . .
.
.
.
I've gotten a s-tone of things done today."
After his little joke, Steven stuffed his hands back into his pockets and turned to the readers; still grinning as he sent them all a wink, and the sound of what seemed to be drumbs went off in the background.
Peridot groaned loudly. "STEVEN!!"
Steven smirked slightly and tilted his head to the side slightly. "Come on. You're smiling~" He teased.
Peridot frowned and turned away from him. "I AM AND I HATE IT!"
A sigh then left Peridot's lips as she placed her hands on her hips and shook her head, furrowing her brows. "Why does someone as great as me. . ." She turned to Steven. "Have to do so much to get some recognition. . ."
Steven gave a cheeky grin. "Wow, sounds like you've been working opal-ly hard lately," He said as he once again turned to the audience and winked.
(Author: Can we get an f in the chat for the fourth wall guys?)
Peridot groaned again and rolled her eyes. "UGH!!!" The green gem sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. "I will attend to my traps. . . As for your work?" Peridot smirked and looked back over to Steven.
"Well, try not to be a morion and mess it up, at least!!!"
(Author: I legit actually searched up gem names and stuff for these puns, pls appreciate)
Peridot laughed loudly at her joke before turning around and walking away; but not officially leaving until she came back and gave one final 'ha' at Steven while smirking triumphantly.
Once Peridot was gone, Steven looked over to the lamp and smiled. "Okay, you can come out now." He said in a chill voice.
Spinel looked over to you, and you shook your head and started to mouth 'book it' to her over and over again until she stood up and. . .
.
.
.
.
.
. . . And did the opposite of what you were telling her to do.
Shivering a bit, Spinel shook her head before walking up to Steven, who turned to face her when he heard her feet crunching against the snow.
"You oughta get going. She might come back. And if she does. . ." Steven winked. "You'll have to sit through of more of my hilarious jokes."
You chuckled and rolled your eyes as you crossed your arms and looked away. "Yeah, keep telling yourself that," You said, unaware of the fact that he had heard you and sent you the stink eye before returning his attention back to Spinel.
Spinel nodded at Steven's words and turned around, walking away from him as he stared at her.
And then he turned his attention to you.
Having felt a pair of eyes on the back of your head, you made a 'huh?' sound and turned, only for your eyes to widen once you and Steven once again locked eyes.
.
.
.
You smirked and giggled.
"Like what ya see, dove?" You asked, making Steven's eyes widen.
The brunette turned away from you and huffed, a tint of red on his cheeks.
You chuckled and turned around once more, listening to Spinel talk about whatever.
Yet, once again, Steven watched you the whole time.
