Episode 2: The Fall of Shiganshina
The next morning, I was not fed breakfast, and the night before I was not served dinner even though the smells came up to my room from the kitchen. Thankfully, my bathroom is attached to my room so I didn't have to ask to go to the bathroom or prepare myself for bed last night.
Today was the day I was going to be shipped out to interior for my dreaded arranged marriage with some young man I didn't even know, but I had another plan in mind. My new plan was to run away and live with Eren and his family for the time being until Erwin comes back from his scouting trip and then I would live with him.
I only got dressed into a simple outfit, not wanting to draw attention to myself, a white puffy sleeve blouse, a black dress with two finger tip length straps, and boots. My decision was to leave all my pieces of jewelry and clothing behind and hopefully secretly come back for them in the future, sneak out for the day, and come back for my suitcase.
Using the spare key to my balcony, I had snuck out, taking all my keys with me so I would have a way back inside to get my suitcase, closing the doors behind me quietly.
For the good portion of the day, I wandered around Shiganshina, taking in my last moments of the city I had grown up in for a good amount of my life.
The city of Shiganshina is always lively, there was something new to do everyday and so many secrets to uncover about the walls and the city.
I enjoyed the day, sitting outside of a small bakery at a table with a small raspberry cake and little garnishes on the top. The birds were chirping, the people were filling the streets, every now and again children would pass by and chase each other through the streets.
From out of nowhere, the fork I had been eating with was knocked from my hand, I was just about to take another bite.
"Hey-!" Looking up at the person who had knocked my fork to the ground, it was my mother.
She had eyes full of rage and I could practically see the smoke coming from her ears and nostrils. She then swiped the China plate, that held my cake, on to the ground, shattering it into tiny pieces.
She then grabbed me by my hair and my arm, dragging me behind her the entire way home, "Hey! Let go of me!" I tried prying her hand off my hair but nothing worked.
"You made us miss the boat! You are going somewhere where NO ONE will find you!" She growled.
Trying to resist her grip only made my pain worse, "Why are you doing this?!" She whipped back, slapping me across the face, full force.
Dropping to my knees from the pain, holding my cheek, trying to stop the stinging burning feeling, "Because you need to be taught a lesson! And to act like a proper lady!"
I was at a loss for words. My own mother didn't appreciate me and wanted to hide me from the world, marry me off to a man I don't know.
She then forcefully picked me up, continuing to drag me away. I surrendered to her, accepting everything. Shiganshina was going to be the last place I saw for the outer territory and then I would be locked inside Wall Sina with my new husband, forever miserable until the day I die.
Once again, my mother threw me back into my room, this time, taking my spare keys from me. I then flopped on my bed, taking everything in all over again, closing my eyes.
Right as my eyes shut, the entire house shook violently and a big crash came from outside while the sky turned a pale yellow, making me jolt upright.
"Over there! I think it came from the sky!"
Someone from outside called out while I rushed to my balcony doors, trying the handles to open the door first realizing they were locked, so I pressed myself against the window, looking towards the outer wall, seeing the smoke first.
My stomach dropped when I saw a giant hand with no skin, gripping the wall then it slowly rose up, its head peaking over the wall. Just like it's hand, there was no skin, just muscles and all of its teeth were exposed. The Titan was bigger than the walls, and they were 50 meters high, this Titan was easily 60 or 70 meters to be able to look over the walls like that.
The front gate then was smashed open, the Titan had kicked the gate open, rocks and debris exploded from the gate and the houses nearby, falling on the houses, crushing them. Thankfully, our house was a good distance away from the debris and the front gate but our house was up towards the front wall just further to the right.
"I have to leave-" Stepping back from the windows slowly, I saw the gaping hole in the gate, the Titans were breaching the city.
"Titans are breaching the city! Retreat within Wall Maria!" A person cried out from outside my window.
Screams of the city folk and multiple sounds of thumping came from nearby, the Titans walking further in the city. I was practically frozen, I couldn't move no matter how much I wanted to. The thing that scared my body was a scream that came from just outside my house, and loud rapid thumping that shook the whole house. My body naturally wanted to cry out but instead I covered my mouth, I should have screamed instead because I heard was bone breaking crunches, a Titan just ate someone.
The Titan started walking my way, slowly the light coming in through my window disappeared and a Titan peaked through my window, my eyes widened at the sight as I fell to my knees, letting out a blood curling scream. My mother was hanging out of the Titans mouth, twitching, her eyes wide and face covered with blood. My door to my bedroom was kicked open, making my head snap back. My father held his rife out, shooting at the Titan through the glass before grabbing my arm and forcing me to stand before throwing me down behind him. He fired multiple shots at the Titan but did no damage.
The Titan broke a hole in the side of my room, "Célest! Get outta here! Go!" He briefly looked over his shoulder to look at me before the Titan had grabbed him.
Lunging forward, I had gripped his hand, "PAPA! Don't let go! I got you!" Our hands were slipping and the Titan was dragging me with him.
"Céleste! Let go! Let go of me and run!" He screamed, I was either about to fall to my death or be eaten by a Titan. "Run damnit! And leave me!"
I then let go of his hand, "I love you Papa!" Dropping to my knees again.
"Remember who you are! REMEMBER YOUR NAME!" He squirmed and screamed out of pain from the Titans grip before his neck was snapped.
The loud snap of my fathers neck made me want to throw up but I just kneeled there, watching the Titan swallow my mother and tear my fathers limbs off, dropping them in its mouth.
My legs started to pick myself up, before running away, putting as much distance between myself and the Titan while it was still occupied eating my father. I had to get to the gate before it was shut on me, then I would be dead.
I had just passed through a little center place, trying to reach Eren and Mikasa's house but I decided to run the other way when I saw a Titan was a horrifying grin going from ear to ear, blood was dripping from its mouth, making me almost get sick.
The Wall Maria gate was on the other side of the city, but my legs still kept going, even though my mind had given up trying to survive, my body did not. My legs carried me, helping me evade Titans on my way to the Wall Maria gate.
Nearby one of the Wallists reciting stuff from his holy book when I heard a crunching body from above me which made my head turn upwards. Blood then covered my body. Hot, thick, blood covered my face, hair, and parts of my dress, making me scream out of disgust and horror before continuing to run away from the Titan who locked its gaze with mine.
I was a little more than halfway to the gate when the smoke and sparks of fire near the gate appeared. The Garrison must have been firing the cannons to defend the gate for the fleeing people to escape. Turning a corner, I had stepped on to a bridge, the main road was right in front of me, all I had to do was either to jump or run to the entrance of the main road from one of the side roads or alleys.
My legs had decided to run to an entrance, jumping over dead bodies and other obstacles in my way. "I'm almost there! I'm almost there!" Words croaked from my lips as I stared at the path in front of me, the gate was so close.
My mind forgot about my surroundings and where I was. Before I could even move, a hot gust of wind came from behind me, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. My hands shook violently as I turned around to face the Titan behind me, expecting death to take me.
My eyes met a pair of glowing yellow ones circled by pitch black, this was a different breed of Titan. There were patches of visible muscle but parts of its body was covered in a bone like material. Sharp jawline, jagged lines for a mouth, and pale blonde hair.
His hand reached out for me, my body stiffened up as I scrunched my eyes closed. A gentle stroke on my face, made me open my eyes. The Titan had used its thumb for something. Then I turned to a window, looking at my reflection, my face was somewhat cleaned of the blood. The Titan had just wiped the blood off my face, retracting its hand.
"Th-thank you."
It slowly nodded its head, blinking its eyes, acknowledging me and my thankfulness. It understood me.
Turning its head, it was looking for something, it's gaze landed on a small garden that was untouched by the rubble and other debris. It's two fingers gently plucked a rose from the garden, handing it to me. I accepted the rose, the pedals were abnormally big but healthy, a few drops of water were still on the pedals from being watered earlier. It then stood up straight, looking down on me before winking at me.
The Titan surprised me. It's actions were very out of the ordinary, almost as if it was a human. A human that controlled a Titans body. My body seemed to freeze up from embarrassment as I felt my cheeks heat up.
The Titan looked towards the Wall Maria gate before walking off. I stood frozen in place, keeping my distance behind the Titan. It stopping in the middle of the road, I saw the gate, the Garrison and the cannons in the front firing at the smaller Titans, the Titan was going to ram the gate and crack it open like an egg.
Like a sprinter, the Titan prepared itself for its sprint, its foot digging into the ground which made my stomach drop and cling on to something for dear life which was a small tree nearby and I tucked the rose in the skirt of my dress. All the force that was pushed out from the Titan, shook the houses, turning them into rubble, vibrating everything at an extreme rate while charging for the closing gate, cracking it open like an egg, sending debris flying and forming a dust cloud. Pieces of debris cut my exposed skin and pierced through my clothes.
I took a moment to try and brush myself off, remove the rose from my skirt and cough from the dust when my eyes landed on the gate. My stomach dropped at the sight, the wall, the gate, it was broken through. The wall really could be destroyed after all.
"The wall- the wall," I stuttered, letting go of the nearby tree, staring at the other side of Wall Maria. "It really did crack open like an egg."
At a nearby stable, horses were neighing, frightened, standing on their back legs trying to escape their enclosures. From behind me I could hear more Titans get closer, they were headed for the main gate to flood inside Wall Maria.
My head slightly turned around at the sight of the Titans approaching which startled me, forcing me to run for the horse enclosures.
I picked out a brown horse with flowing black hair, he seemed like a strong and fast runner and that was my plan, to run as far as I could.
My horse was startled from the Armored Titan and the great force he pushed out from running. I gently placed my hand on his head, stroking him to calm him and gain his trust before mounting him.
The horse hopped the enclosure fence while I used his mane as the reigns to control him and try to stay on him without slipping off. We were on a mad dash for the open gate, while the Titans were still approaching us from behind.
The "Armored Titan" was standing just outside the hole, waiting for something, maybe me. It's feet were visible through the hole it left in Wall Maria. Going through, there was still rubble falling from the ceiling and the sides which only made me tug on my horse's mane tighter to make him go faster.
My horse sprinted in between the Titans legs, as I turned to look back, I met its gaze again as we passed by, his head following me on horseback while the abnormal rose was still in my hand.
The boats filled with some refugees from Shiganshina already had departed, leaving behind a large number of people, men, women, and children. They were all crying and yelling at some of the Garrison members for not letting them on the boats. Some of the men even tried jumping off the ledge to save themselves and hop on the boat.
"MOVE OUT OF THE WAY! COMING THROUGH!" Yelling to the sea of people, they cleared a path for me, some almost, got ran over by me if they didn't move in time.
My horse was just a bit faster than the boats, the second boat had just launched from the docks, while the first boat was ways ahead, "Let's try to get ahead of that boat shall we?" My head cocked to the side to look at my horse in the eye, the way he looked at me, I knew he understood me because he started going faster, pushing himself.
My hair blew in the wind behind me and the ride was smooth, even in the middle of chaos, I never felt so alive and free.
While riding through small villages and passing by houses, they looked at me as if they were confused, but I remembered that they didn't know about Shiganshina and Wall Maria, "THE TITANS HAVE BROKEN THROUGH SHIGANSHINA AND WALL MARIA! RETREAT TO THE TROST DISTRICT!" My warning did nothing, I yelled that every time I passed through a village or by a house, people needed to know but they never listened.
When I had arrived at the gate, the sun was setting and the cannons were pointed downward, the gate was being guarded and the Garrison had their rifles out, "What is your business here?!" One of the multiple Garrison members yelled at me while I stopped my horse a few feet away from the gate.
"Please let me through! Shiganshina and Wall Maria has fallen to the Titans! Please let me pass!" My horse hopped around while I begged for safety to pass through.
"Bullshit! If Shiganshina and Wall Maria were breached, the Garrison would be the first to know about it!" All the guards on duty then cocked and pointed their guns at me, except the one man who was talking to me.
"Please I'm begging you! There's two ships full of refugees and that's not even half of Shiganshina's population!"
"Then how did you escape?! Why aren't you on one of the ships?! Speak carefully, girl, or we will open fire on you!" The man emphasized.
"I am Commander Erwin Smith's adopted sister! Now let me pass!"
All the guards flinched, somewhat lowering their weapons with wide eyes. They all looked at each other in shock.
While horseback, I gave them a heartfelt salute, just like how Erwin taught me, "I hate for you to lose your positions but I respect your service, now please let me through." The guards lowered their rifles, the one who was talking with me also saluted me, placing his fist over the left side of his chest and his arm behind his back.
"Yes, ma'am! Right away ma'am!" He yelled, then the guards with the rifles cleared a path for me, letting me pass through, not long after my arrival, the two boats from Shiganshina arrived at Trost.
There were people surrounding the gate and a swarm of Survey Corps and Garrison troops nearby, none of which were Erwin Smith, my heart sank and my mind thought the worse had happened to him. Everyone was staring at the incoming ships of refugees from Shiganshina.
"What happened?"
"What's going on?"
A few people around me were whispering, trying to keep their voices down and not to upset the refugees on the boats.
"Shiganshina was attacked," I spoke out, quiet enough for people around me to hear. Their heads turned as they gasped for air. "A Colossal and Armored Titan breached the walls, this isn't even half of Shiganshina's population."
"But-but how do you know?!"
"Because I was there, I escaped with my life." The people around me noticed the state of my clothing and horror wiped their faces, one person near me even started throwing up. Dried blood splattered my dress and caked my hair and parts of my skin.
The Survey Corps and Garrison troops helped unload the boats and lead people to the temporary refugee sanctuary they had set up. While pushing through the crowd with my horse at my side, I wanted to see if I could recognize anyone I knew and if they survived.
My head turned at a familiar voice, "Head this way to the sanctuary!"
I kept pushing through the crowd, following the voice, "Excuse me." Once I came to an opening with my horse, my heart dropped out of relief and happiness when I saw Erwin near some of his other comrades.
My throat became hot as some tears started falling down my cheeks. I thought he was dead and I'd never see him again, "Erwin!" I croaked out, loud enough to break through the loud chatter.
He turned around, his face in complete shock as we ran to each other, meeting in the middle he picked me up off my feet in his arms. My face was buried in his neck, getting his skin all wet.
My whole body was shaking like a leaf while in the safety of his arms with the giant rose still in my hand, "I thought you were dead. You never came back. The Titans-"
"I know, I know, my Angel. I was on my way back to Shiganshina when I heard the news of breach on Wall Maria." He cooed, stroking my hair.
"My-my parents. My parents-"
Erwin broke away from my, setting me down, "I figured they'd be dead," Then he noticed the state of me, covered in dry blood. "What happened to you Angel? Are you hurt?!" I brushed hair out of my face to check my head before bending down and checking the rest of my body for cuts and broken bones.
"No, I'm ok, this isn't my blood." My voice was hushed, remembering everything that had happened back in Shiganshina.
From behind Erwin, I saw his comrades staring and whispering to each other, "I promise I'll take care of you-"
"Wait, won't they throw you out of the Scouts for taking care of me?" Using the back of my hand, I wiped my nose.
"You're too young to be taking care of yourself and besides, I'm their Commander so they have to listen to me, don't worry Angel, you're going to be ok." He then kissed my forehead. My horse came up behind me, rubbing his snout on my arm.
Erwin took my free hand and led over to his comrades to introduce me. The girl named Hange was freaking out over me. She wore goggles and kept some of her brunette hair up behind her, she also was very talkative and bubbly. Erwin said that Hange does scientific experiments with the Titans they capture.
Then there was a shorter man with a deadly gaze and raven hair, his name was Captain Levi. Captain Levi didn't say much except that I was a brat which hurt my feelings a little bit but Hange reassured me that he didn't mean it, it's his way of talking to people and I shouldn't take it harshly.
Then there was Miche, Oruo, and Petra. Miche and Oruo scared me a bit so I stayed closed to Erwin but Petra bent down to my level and complemented me on my rose that somehow no one noticed.
Hange was intrigued about my abnormal rose and asked me how I came by finding it, I didn't say much about it other than it was given to me.
Petra elbowed Captain Levi, then raised her brows at him. Levi rolled his eyes and took off his green cape, wrapping it around me, "Welcome to the Survey Corps, brat."
A wide smile painted my face, then I abruptly gave them the salute which impressed them, "Thank you Captain Levi, I won't let you guys down."
