I want to get lost into your ocean eyes and never come back.
MONDAY MORNING brought with it the usual chaos in the school hallways. Students moved noisily, chatting among themselves and complaining about returning to class. Powder, however, walked with her usual light step and cocky smile, the familiar note from her secret admirer clenched between her fingers. She had taken it from her locker like every morning, and even though she would never admit it out loud, those letters made her strangely happy.
She knew that whoever the sender was, they took the time to write such kind, almost poetic words to her. She wasn't used to that kind of attention, and as much as she found it mysterious, she liked it. Reading those notes had become a small routine that made her day a little brighter.
When she entered the classroom with her usual energy, Powder's gaze immediately landed on the familiar figure of Stella, sitting at her desk by the window. Stella was impeccable as always—her blonde hair perfectly styled, the collar of her blouse neatly pressed, her face buried in a book. Powder couldn't help but smile. Stella always seemed out of place in the school's chaos, as if she belonged to a calmer, more refined world.
Powder approached her with her usual enthusiasm, ready to greet her. «Hey, St—» she began, but her voice died in her throat the moment her eyes caught sight of something she never wanted to see.
On the right side of Stella's neck, just above the collar of her shirt, was a dark mark. A bruise, round and clearly visible, and Powder recognized it immediately for what it was.
A hickey.
A hickey.
A hickey!?
Powder froze on the spot, her smile slipping away, replaced by an expression of pure shock. She stiffened, staring at that mark as if it were a personal insult.
Who the hell...?
Her hands clenched into fists involuntarily, and she felt heat rise inside her—an unexpected, fierce wave of emotions she couldn't entirely decipher. It was jealousy. She knew it. It was like a fire burning in her chest, making her clench her jaw and look away quickly before Stella could lift her eyes from her book and catch her staring.
Powder spun on her heel and marched toward her desk, almost running. She dropped heavily into her seat next to Ekko, who was already nibbling on his morning sandwich with a sleepy expression.
«Pow, you good?» Ekko asked, raising an eyebrow at her weird behavior.
«Shut up.» Powder hissed, shooting him a sharp look. She glanced around to make sure no one was listening, then grabbed his arm, pulling him closer.
«Whoa! Okay...» he said, confused. «What's going on?»
Powder leaned in even more, whispering tensely into his ear. «Did you see Stella?»
Ekko nodded, watching her with a mix of concern and curiosity. «Yeah, she's in her usual spot. Why?»
«Did you see what's on her neck!?»
Ekko raised an eyebrow, clearly not understanding where she was going with this. «Her neck? No. What's on it?»
Powder huffed, frustrated. «She has a hickey. A hickey!»
Ekko leaned back slightly, looking at her with an incredulous expression. «A hickey? Are you sure?»
«Of course!» Powder snapped, crossing her arms and furrowing her brows. She turned toward Stella again, who was still lost in her book, completely unaware of Powder's burning gaze.
Ekko scratched the back of his neck, trying not to laugh. «Okay, but... why are you so worked up? I mean, it's just a mark. Maybe she got hurt, it's not necessarily-»
Powder cut him off, gritting her teeth. «It's not just a regular bruise, Ekko. And I know exactly what it means. Someone gave her that mark. Someone was close to her. Too close.»
Ekko stared at her for a moment, then his eyes lit up with realization. «Wait a second... are you jealous?»
Powder shot him a murderous glare. «Don't be ridiculous.»
«Oh, you totally are.» he replied, barely holding back a grin. «I can see it on your face. You're blushing, your fists are clenched... it's eating you alive, isn't it?»
Powder waved a hand dismissively, as if trying to swat away his words. «I'm not jealous, okay? It's just that... I don't get it. Who could it be? Who would do something like that to Stella? And why?»
Ekko chuckled quietly. «Pow, she's a cute girl. Maybe someone likes her and-»
«That's not the point!» Powder snapped, drawing the attention of a few classmates nearby. She immediately lowered her voice, embarrassed. «I just want to know who it was.»
Ekko sighed, raising his hands in surrender. «Okay, okay. And how exactly do you plan on finding out?»
Powder frowned, looking at Stella again. Just the sight of that mark on her neck made her blood boil. «I don't know.» she admitted. «But I will. I mean, it has to be someone close to her, right?»
Ekko watched her for a moment, then shrugged, chuckling. «You're a lost cause, you know that?»
Powder ignored him, staring at Stella once more. Her mind was a mess, filled with images of unknown faces getting too close to her, touching her face, laughing with her, placing their hands in places far too intimate...
Whoever it was, they'd better watch out.
Powder thought, clenching her fists so tightly that her knuckles ached.
Powder was determined. She couldn't let the mystery of the mark on Stella's neck torture her any longer. Whoever had dared to get that close to Stella had to be exposed, and she wouldn't stop until she had answers.
«Ekko, let's go.» Powder said firmly, grabbing her best friend by the arm and dragging him toward the school courtyard.
Ekko sighed, letting himself be pulled along with a resigned expression. «Pow, you're overreacting. Do you really want to spend lunch spying on Stella? Don't you think you're being a little obsessive?»
Powder shot him a glare, planting herself in front of him. «I'm not overreacting! And I'm not obsessive. I just want to figure out who gave her that mark. Is that so weird?»
Ekko raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms. «It's not just weird. It's creepy. And you're jealous as hell.»
Powder ignored the accusation, spinning around to look at Stella, who had just sat down under a tree, away from her classmates. She was alone, as always, with her lunch beside her and a book in her hands.
She was breathtakingly beautiful.
«Look.» Powder murmured, hiding behind a tree with Ekko. «There she is, all calm. I just want to see who approaches her.»
Ekko sighed, leaning against the tree trunk. «Pow, this is ridiculous. Look, no one is going near her. She's always alone. You spent the whole morning obsessing over this, and now you're wasting lunch stalking her.»
«I'm not stalking her!» Powder protested, watching Stella intently. Every time someone walked past her, Powder narrowed her eyes, noting every little detail—who spoke to her, how they looked at her, if they smiled too much. But nothing. Stella remained alone, lost in her book as if the rest of the world didn't exist.
Ekko checked his watch, sighing again. «Okay, listen, I'm going to grab something to eat. Have fun with your genius plan.»
Powder grabbed his sleeve, stopping him. «No, stay! I need your help.»
«Help with what?» he asked, exasperated.
«For... for analyzing.» Powder stammered slightly. «Two sets of eyes are better than one. I mean, maybe I'll miss something, right?»
Ekko shook his head, holding back a laugh. «Pow, listen to me. There's nothing to analyze. It's just Stella, sitting alone, like she always does. No one is approaching her, no one is talking to her... except you.»
Those words made Powder freeze for a moment. She knew. She had always known. But seeing that mark had triggered something inside her, an emotion so strong and irrational that she couldn't control it.
Her stomach ached.
«What if it happened outside of school?» Powder murmured, more to herself than to Ekko, biting her finger.
«Oh my God.» Ekko groaned, rolling his eyes. «Pow, don't you have anything better to do?»
Powder ignored him again, staring at Stella with an intensity that could cut through the air. Even in the afternoon, during club activities, Powder kept watching Stella from a distance. Sometimes she peeked from behind a door or hid behind a column, but the result was always the same: Stella was alone. Always.
By the end of the day, Ekko was exhausted. «Okay, enough. It's obvious there's nothing to find out. You know what? Why don't you just go up to her and ask her what happened?»
Powder turned to him, raising her eyebrows. «Ask her directly? Are you crazy?»
«Why not?» Ekko shrugged. «This is eating you alive. Maybe it's easier than you think.»
Powder hesitated, unsure. Asking directly meant risking looking interested, and she didn't want Stella to think that... that she cared more than necessary.
She cared, but not that much. But the curiosity was gnawing at her, and the idea of spending a night without answers was unbearable.
«Okay.» she finally said, standing up abruptly, determination painted across her face. «I'll do it.»
Ekko raised his hands. «Finally! Well, I'm heading home. Good luck with... whatever this is.»
Powder didn't say anything, running toward the school building. Her heart pounded as she searched for Stella in the hallways, pushing past students and ignoring their confused looks. Finally, she saw her—Stella was walking calmly, books clutched to her chest, as absorbed as always.
Jinx slowed down, trying to steady herself. When she was close enough, she stepped in front of Stella, blocking her path.
Stella looked up, surprised. «Jinx? What's wrong?»
She opened her mouth to speak, but the words got stuck in her throat. She could hear her own heartbeat pounding in her ears, and for a moment, she thought about turning around and running away. But it was too late now.
«Who gave you that mark?» she finally asked, her voice louder and pinched than she intended.
Stella blinked, confused. «Mark?»
Jinx pointed at her neck, trying not to stare too hard at the incriminating spot. «That... that mark on your neck. The dark one. Who did that to you?»
Stella looked where Jinx was pointing, then realization dawned on her face. Her eyes lit up with understanding, and a faint blush rose to her cheeks. «Oh, that?» she said, touching her neck embarrassed.
Powder nodded, holding her breath.
Stella smiled slightly, lowering her gaze. «It's just a burn. I burned myself this morning with the iron while fixing my shirt collar.»
Jinx's mouth fell open, frozen in place. «Really?»
Stella looked up, confused by her reaction. «Yeah... why are you asking?»
Jinx felt a wave of relief wash over her, so intense it almost made her lose balance. «Oh.» she said, trying to mask her nervousness with a strained smile. «Nothing. I thought it was... well, something else.»
Stella tilted her head slightly, intrigued, but didn't press further. «Well, thanks for worrying.» she said smiling softly, tucking a strand of golden hair behind her ear.
Jinx scratched the back of her neck, trying not to look too embarrassed. «Yeah, sure. No problem.»
As Stella walked away, Jinx stood there, a silly smile on her lips and her heart lighter than it had been all day.
It was just a burn.
She repeated it in her mind at least four times, savoring the warmth of relief spreading through her chest.
Nothing to worry about.
