Baking Therapy ๐ ๐ป (โ๏ธโค๏ธโ๐ฉน)
Plot
Everyone knows Mikey is the culinary expert in the family, so when a rainy day ruins a chance for a nice family picnic it leaves Mikey a bit upset but not for long. When he goes to the kitchen, he finds Lillie gathering up ingredients and making something completely new which peeks his interest as he learns that baking can be an outlet for others.
Mikey gave a soft sigh as the box turtle was in his room and laying in his hammock with a mopey look on his face, he had planned out a nice family picnic for him, his brothers and their dad but that was cut off rather fast due to the unexpected downpour of rain.
Mikey hid his face in his pillow as one of his legs dangled off the side of the bed and he was lost in his thoughts for a while until he heard his stomach growling, making him lift his head away from his pillow for a minute. "Maybe some pizza will get my mind off it.." Mikey sighed.
The orange masked turtle got up and made his way to the kitchen as Mikey tried not to let the bad weather get to him or ruin his mood but it was failing a bit.
Mikey hugged his arms for a bit before he heard a clattering noise from the kitchen as he tilted his head, his arms went back to his sides as he made his way to the doorway of the kitchen and took a peek.
Lillie picked up the metal bowl she dropped and she then placed it back on the counter once she climbed up the stepping stool that Donnie made for her, she then brought the step stool over to the next counter so she could reach the cabinet. She started to climb up the stool and stood on her tippy toes but couldn't reach the cabinet handle as it was just a few inches away from her grasp. "Lil's?" Mikey asked.
Lillie squeaked in surprise and held onto the counter so she didn't fall off the stepping stool as she looked over at her orange masked brother, she was still trying to get used to having the turtle brothers as her siblings since she had been an only child her whole life.
"Sorry if I spooked you, what are you up to?" Mikey asked, walking into the kitchen and he looked at his little sister curiously.
"Oh, well Raphie told me that you were sad so I thought I could make something to cheer you up. My papa always made me this whenever I was sad." Lillie then grabbed a journal from the counter and showed Mikey the page as there was a photograph of a purple looking Swiss roll along with a written recipe on the page.
"Whoa, that does look pretty tasty. But what's ub-ee?" Mikey asked, he had never heard of this kind of baked good before as he gently grabbed the journal and read the instructions as Lillie then went to the fridge to grab the eggs. "It's Ube, my papa told me that it's kinda like a sweet potato but its technically a yam." Lillie said.
"Yams? Hm, how about I help you make this? Raph would definitely get worried if you burned yourself using the oven." Mikey said, Lillie gave a nod and she then grabbed the eggs and Mikey grabbed the other remaining ingredients that Lillie couldn't get from the cabinet.
The two then got to work on making the ube roll as Mikey handled the dry ingredients and made sure they were properly mixed together, he saw Lillie handle the wet ingredients and then they carefully combined both of them.
"Now for the main ingredients!" Lillie chimed, she grabbed some ube powder she had rehydrated thanks to Mikey's help using the stove and added it to the mixture along with a tablespoon of ube extract.
"My papa said that if the batter turns a vibrant purple then it's perfect." Lillie said, she turned to Mikey who gave a nod and write it down in his notes so he could plan on making this ube roll again, Lillie mixed together the ingredients as they saw the batter shift to a beautiful vibrant purple color as the ube extract was mixed in.
"Whoa, your pops wasn't kidding either. This might just be Donnie's favorite dessert after this!" Mikey chimed, Lillie smiled and then poured the batter onto a baking sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
Mikey tapped it down so there wasn't any bubbles left and he then put the baking sheet in the oven, setting a timer so they know when it was ready to come out of the oven.
"Alright junior baker, what's next?" Mikey asked, he smiled a little and turned to Lillie who carefully got down from her step stool and brought it over to the fridge. "You know how to make buttercream icing, right?" Lillie asked, she set the stool down and used it to reach the freezer.
"Yeah, why?" Mikey asked, he walked over and helped Lillie out as he saw that there was a metal bowl in the freezer along with the beater for the mixer. "That's the next step, we're making the filling for the ube roll..!" Lillie chimed.
She grabbed the bowl and beater and shivered at how cold both metal items were but powered through and brought them to the counter while Mikey got the ingredients to make buttercream, he even showed Lillie how to make it so she knew how to do it by herself in the future. Once they got the buttercream icing done, it was put in the fridge to keep cool while they waited for the cake to finish baking.
After a about fifteen minutes, the timer went off and Mikey took the ube cake out of the oven and set it on a cooling rack so Lillie didn't burn herself touching it. "So you've made this before?" Mikey asked, he set the oven mits aside once he set the sheet down and Lillie gave a nod at Mikey.
"Me and my papa made it whenever it was rainy or whenever I was sad, it always cheered me up..!" Lillie chirped, she smiled a little and Mikey gave a small smile but patted Lillie's head. After waiting a while longer, the cake cooled and Mikey got the icing from the fridge as Lillie showed Mikey what to do.
Then she started to put the buttercream icing on the ube cake and made sure to evenly spread it but saved enough for later, Mikey then followed the instructions in Lillie's journal and used the parchment paper to roll up the ube cake into a roll shape as he didn't want the cake to crack and once it was placed on a plate, they put plastic wrap over it and then place it back in the fridge. "And now we wait, trust me this is worth it." Lillie said, Mikey gave a nod in agreement and stated to Lillie that patience was apart of cooking and baking.
Mikey reheated some pizza for him and Lillie to eat while Lillie took care of the dishes and she smiled a little, the two got to chat and they didn't know that all the baking left a wondrous aroma wafting around the lair.
After about an hour, the ube roll was finally done after putting three dollops of buttercream icing on top of the ube roll and Mikey cut a slice for him and Lillie as he gave Lillie her plate of the sweet treat.
Mikey tried some of it and he got little stars in his eyes as he was surprised how tasty it was and Lillie ate her slice of the ube roll happily. "Oh mi gosh, Lillie this is amazing! And you were right, this does make me feel a lot better!" Mikey chimed up.
Lillie smiled and she nodded a little before looking over as Mikey noticed and he looked over too, seeing his brothers peek into the kitchen as they eyed the purple looking Swiss roll. "You gonna share that?" Leo asked.
"Yeah, there's plenty to go around guys." Mikey said, he smiled and Lillie was just glad that she could make Mikey feel better even after his plans had been messed up by the rain, she still helped him learn something completely different to do when the weather shifts.
