many stories were told about the devil. he/she came in many forms, some grotesque, some irresistible. his/her only reason for existence was one and one only; torture the damned and those who dared speak ill of his/her name. everyone feared the devil. men and women alike sweat through nightmarish dreams of coming face to face with him/her. bedtime stories told to terrified children kept them in check, away from the tempting calls of the lord of evil beckoning them into sin. but not you. you didn't believe in the devil.

he/she, unlike the stories everyone once told you, did not brood the pits of hell, overseeing the ocean of lost spirits and blood rivers. he/she did not hide out in the darkness, jumping through the shadows, whispering violence into the weak-willed. his/her name was (bias), and you loved him/her.

you never thought you'd find out such news this way, staring at your own body in a hospital bed, wrapped shapeless in casts and bandages. your pale, soulless face seemed caved in from days of unmoved sleep, and it made your stomach sink. seeing yourself slowly waste away made you sick.

no one could see you. you'd tried for hours to get everyone's attention when you'd first been brought in. you'd screamed in their faces, tried to tackle them, cried. no one saw you. except him/her. you looked at the chair in the corner of the room where he/she sat, and met his/her eyes.

"what?" he/she asked. the calmness on his/her face was unnerving.

"how can you see me?"
