Chapter One: The Announcement, Part Two
Hazelle
"Try to get a higher up angle!" I shout from across the street to Adeline, who's taking photos of me.
"Okay, okay." Adeline shouts back while climbing onto a small rock wall. "Ooo, yes, this is perfect! Okay last one."
"Did we get some good ones for Insta?"
"Yes, definitely. Here come look!" Adeline waves her hand, signaling for me to come over to her.
"Perfect!" I say while grabbing onto my phone. "I'm going to miss you so much!" Adeline and I had planned to stay the week in Italy, but some urgent family matters came up and she needed to get home. I'm going to stay in Italy for the week, alone.
"Same, but all good things have to come to an end, right?"
"True, but still." I say while making a pouty face. Adeline wraps her arms around me and we hug.
_______
Once we're at the airport Adeline and I hug again and now we must part. I wave a final goodbye and then she heads toward security. 'Till we meet again.'
Heading out of the airport I call, "Taxi! Taxi!" Then a bright yellow car pulls up in front of me and I tell him the address of a store I've been wanting to go to.
As he pulls up to the store I grab out some cash from my purse. "Gracias!"
"Hm?" The driver says in confusion.
"Thank you." I mumble awkwardly in embarrassment. I hop out of the taxi and head for the large glass door of 'Gems of Venice.' It's a very fancy jewelry store. But, as I walk closer to them I see a small piece of paper that reads, 'Closed due to the PANDEMIC.'
"Excuse me? I've been wanting to come here since I was like twelve! What 'pandemic' are they even talking about? Ugh, whatever, I don't need this.
"Taxi!" I yell angrily as I'm waving my arm vigorously.
"Thanks." I say after closing the sunshine yellow door of the taxi. I stumble into the luxury hotel I'm staying at for the week. It's not much, but it costs $850 a night so I'll let you decide how fancy it is. Adeline and I were splitting the pay, but since she's not here anymore I have to pay it in full.
Once I'm in the glass elevator, I press 'floor 9' and wait until the little elevator voice says 'floor nove.' Apparently that means nine in Italian. Finally, I get to my room number and I can sit down! "I'm so tired," that's when my phone lit up and said 'Mandatory Isolation!' "Excuse me?" I say for the second time today.
I grab the black remote and turn on the news, '3751.' My eyes widen when the man on the tv screen says, 'Worldwide pandemic spreads throughout Italy. Mayor of Venice issues a mandatory isolation period of seven days!'
"Are you serious! I'm supposed to leave in three days! I haven't done so many things that I wanted to do." I let out a sigh of annoyance, "I can't believe that I'm going to be stuck here, doing nothing for a whole week."
I jump back in shock when I hear on the loud speakers, "Per favore, please make your way down to the atrio, lobby. An annuncio, announcement will be made." I grab a couple of my things, assuming that I'll be down there for a while.
A lot of people are waiting by the elevators to get down, 'is this really that serious?'
Once I'm down I the lobby a tall woman with a blue surgical mask on stands on a podium sort of thing. "Due to the Mayor's decision of isolation, this hotel will be closed until further notice. Please go to your rooms and pack your things, everyone will need to be checked by five pm tonight! We are very sorry for the inconvenience."
"No way. No way damn way! I spent way to much money on this hotel and they're just kicking me out?" I whisper violently, but very quietly.
"Well where am I supposed to stay now? The streets? I don't think so." I say to myself while putting all of my belongings in my pastel yellow suitcase.
"Here's my room key," I say to front desk lady. Once I'm out the door I mumble, "thanks for nothing! I'm gonna give this place a one star rating on yelp!"
For the first time since the announcement I realize, "I have no place to stay."
