"SO what? you guys are friends now?" nick asks brynn, turning his phone around to show the comment that jackie had left on her post. "don't you think that's a bit fucked up?"

brynn just rolls her eyes, "why would it be fucked up?"

"because she and chris used to be together!" nick exclaims, not even trying to explain delicately. he turns off his phone and sets it down on the couch beside him before returning to pester brynn some more. "you know damn well how this could effect them!"

"no, actually." she crosses her arms over her chest defiantly. "i don't know. why don't one of you take some time to explain it to me? instead of just fucking yelling at me all the time."

nick opens his mouth to retaliate, but matt holds a hand up to stop him. the brothers make eye contact and matt flicks his gaze over at chris, wordlessly telling nick to go and talk to him. nick seems a bit reluctant at first, but matt continues to stare him down. and eventually, nick gives in and stomps over to chris.

they're in the van, just having passed the state line separating new york and massachusetts. their manager is driving, thinking it'd be best to let everyone rest on the way back home. but after seeing jackie's comment, nobody has done much resting.

the van is small, everything squished together. for the makeshift living room, they have two couches and a flat screen tv. there's not much for a kitchen — just a sink, table, and a few cabinets — which is why they ate at fast food for most of tour. also, in the very back, there's a series of bunk beds that everyone complains about in the morning when their backs ache.

"i'm sorry we're keeping you in the dark." matt says quietly. "jackie is a difficult topic for all of us, not just chris."

with everyone's attention now elsewhere, matt turns to his girlfriend with a soft expression. she continues to stare forward, refusing to make eye contact with him. because she knows that if she saw that gentle smile he's wearing, she'd automatically give in. and she's trying to be angry, right now.

"i can be friends with whoever i want." she leans back on the couch, pouting. "i know that you guys have a tough history and i respect their decision not to talk about it. but you guys can't expect me to know everything if nobody will tell me."

matt sighs, draping an arm over brynn's shoulders before tugging her toward him. she allows it, flopping down to lean on her boyfriend.

"i won't tell you everything, seeing as it's not my business to share. but i'll answer almost any questions you have." matt says. "you're right. it's not fair to act as if you know what happened. but seeing jackie again this weekend was hard. really fucking hard. especially for chris. so, maybe in a few more weeks, he'll be more willing to open up. just be patient."

brynn nods against his chest, making matt smile.

their relationship isn't perfect, but nobody's is. they argue sometimes and there are little habits that they don't like about the other. but as long as they have each other, matt's positive that everything will be okay.

CHRIS doesn't care.

he doesn't care that they're friends. he doesn't care that she's moved on. he doesn't care that she's changed. he doesn't care that they didn't say a single word to each other. he doesn't care that he lost his one chance at talking to her.

yeah. yeah, he doesn't care at all. he couldn't care less, actually. he doesn't even think about jackie anymore. he's moving on, too. he has new friends and a stable job. he doesn't care. not at all. totally not.

"wanna watch a movie?" jace asks, sitting beside chris on his little bunked bed. the mattress is hardly big enough to even fit chris, much less two full grown men. jace has to squeeze and turn just to sit on the edge.

"no," chris responds, barely audible.

he can hear nick and brynn arguing in the living room area. he doesn't want to know what they're saying, though. but it takes a bit of energy to tune them out when they're being so loud. he tries not to focus on their words every time jackie's name is spoken. because he doesn't care, remember? not at all.

"we don't have to go out there. we can stay in here, if you want." jace offers. "we can watch it on my laptop instead of the tv, if you'd prefer."

chris wants to refuse, but he knows he would feel bad by doing so. jace doesn't understand what's going on any more than brynn does, he's simply more silent in his curiosity. chris can tell, though, that he wanted to be jackie's friend just as much as brynn. and he's a bit let down by the fact that she got her number and he didn't.

but chris doesn't point this out. because its clear that jace is trying to bury his own emotions to make room for chris's.

"sure, why not?" chris eventually gives in, scooting over in the bed to make room for jace. he's pressed firmly against the wall while jace is still halfway hanging off the mattress. but neither of them complain.

jace pulls out his laptop and begins searching for a good movie. jace takes time to read all of the summaries whereas chris just looks at the pictures. just when they finally choose a decent-looking film, nick stomps over to them.

he looks mad and disheveled, face flushed with anger. chris wants to ignore his brother and watch the movie. but jace is quick to say something.

"are you okay?" he asks, shifting a bit as to look up at nick.

from their spot in the bottom bunk, it's hard to see anything other than the floor. chris chose this bed, though, because he thought it would be harder for anyone to bother him. when you're in the top bunk, everyone likes to reach up and poke or yell at you to wake up ; in the middle bunk, you're destined for torture, being in the perfect spot for everyone else to mess with you.

last tour, he made the mistake of choosing the middle bunk. but after waking up to jace pouring a bottle of water over his head, chris swore never to sleep there again.

he thought that the bottom bunk would be safe, this time. but he was wrong. nick always kicks him in the back in the middle of the night on his way to the bathroom. now that he's foot-level, it's almost a daily occurrence to get a bruise from someones shoe.

the only way you're safe is if you wake up first. and that's impossible considering the fact that brynn wakes up early to do her hair and makeup before any of the boys can take the bathroom.

"i'm fine, just pissed off." nick responds to jace. "what are you guys doing?"

"we were going to watch a movie." chris calls out from beside jace. nick couches down to the floor and looks into their little space. "but that was before you rudely interrupted."

nick notices the laptop and nods at their movie of choice. "i've been dying to watch this! can i watch it with you?"

"umm," chris says, "i don't think there's room-"

"sure!" jace interrupts quickly. he begins to shift and turn and bend to make room for nick. but regardless of what he does, it doesn't work. he's still hanging off the edge by a few inches no matter what.

eventually nick just smiles. chris recognizes the expression and groans. that's the face he makes before he does something stupid and irrational. then, suddenly, nick is crawling into the bed with them, laying diagonally over their backs.

jace laughs, quickly running out of breath from the way nick is pressing down on his back. chris keeps a straight face, though, not finding the childish antics very funny. he's in too bad of a mood to laugh at nick today.

but when nick makes some comment about how huge the bed is, chris can't help but laugh. and, knowing nick, he has to add onto the joke and make them laugh even harder.

eventually, chris is dying with laughter, tears forming in the corners of his eyes. and the thing is, he doesn't even remember what the joke was in the first place. he's just happy to be with his friends.

this is what family is. chris thinks, as he looks at his biological brother, then over at his best friend. the three boys all lay on the twin-sized bed, smushed and squeezed against each other as their laughter fills the room.

this is what makes life worth living.

i would genuinely defend brynn w my life 😠 she's not perfect at ALL ,, but that's what makes me love her so much more bc everyone pretends their characters are perfect and flawless , but im trying to make this fic more realistic than that bc they're human & they make mistakes too
