JACKIE quickly shoves her phone back into her pocket, glancing around to make sure her boss didn't catch her using it. as her eyes graze across her surroundings, they end up landing on her boyfriend. he's currently on break, sitting at the little table in the corner of the diner. he feels her staring, and looks up from his phone. his entire face lights up when their eyes meet, giving her a small smile. jackie smiles back before quickly returning to her shift.
she and blake have been dating for about six months now, and he still gets excited as a puppy when she gives him any sort of attention. it's honestly adorable to watch. even their boss has admitted how cute of a pair they are — which might seem like something that'd be awkward to talk about with you boss, but it wasn't. jackie and blake actually met each other at the diner as coworkers. plus, their boss is a sweet old lady named ms lennon who doesn't have a single judgmental bone in her body.
ms lennon is the polar opposite of jackie's other boss, mr cleveland.
jackie works two jobs, at the moment — one being a waitress at ms lennon's vintage little diner with pink walls and checkered flooring ; the second being a barista at mr clevelands night club with booming music and flashing purple lights.
ms lennon is always smiling, and never has a bad thing to say about anyone. she enjoys talking about her ex-husband and their beautiful grand babies. everybody loves her.
mr cleveland, on the other hand, is never seen without a scowl on his face and his arms crossed. his intimidatingly muscular build is enough to protect his employees from any possible unwanted company, but other than that, it's unclear whether the man even has a heart for anything.
when she switches from one to the next, it's like transferring to an alternate world. but they pay well when put together, so she can't complain but so much. as long as she makes enough cash for bills and groceries, jackie is perfectly content with her lifestyle. it's not cheap to live in new york, even if she's on the outskirts of the city.
"can't focus?" blake's voice is heard only a foot or two away from jackie, causing her to jump. she had last seen him in the booth across the diner. the last thing she expected was for the man to now be directly in front her. he's on the other side of the counter, sitting in one of the bar stools. he notices her shock and laughs, "sorry, i just wanted to make sure everything was okay. you seem a bit off today."
"thanks," she replies with a reassuring smile, causing blake to visibly relax at knowing she's okay. his shoulders drop slightly and he releases a gentle huff of air. "i'm fine, though, my mind is just wandering a ton because it's monday."
he laughs, leaning forward on his elbows. "i get that, trust me. i would definitely prefer to be back at the apartment with willie, right now."
jackie and blake don't live together, but they might as well. he lives in his college dorm with two other guys — both of which he claims to be complete assholes. blake can't stand the bustling environment of college, and has contemplated dropping out many times. but jackie has pulled him out of that mindset multiple times, knowing how easy it is to allow your life to fall apart. she allows blake to stay with her at her apartment, and that's that.
her apartment has one bedroom and one bathroom, making the space very tiny. it's on the top floor, but comes with an anticlimactic view of trees and construction. she loves it, though. it's decorated very cozily, with lots of books and vinyl records displayed. jackie, blake, and her cat willie all love the place that's quickly become home to them. they take up the space nicely, causing it to be a bit packed but still perfectly comfortable.
"i get off in twenty minutes." jackie says as she glances toward the grandfather clock ms lennon hung up only a few weeks ago, after finally realizing it was time to get rid of her old cuckoo clock that no longer worked. "then, i should have about two hours of rest before i go to the club."
blake nods, leaning forward to place a soft kiss on her cheek. she grins, watching as he bids her a quiet goodbye before heading back over to the table in the corner. he settles back into the chair, pulling out a small paperback book to read in the dull light of the diner.
just as jackie turns away from her boyfriend and begins sorting things on the counter, the door dings as someone enters the building. she peers up and sees an old, shabby looking man. he gives her a gummy smile as he approaches the counter. she recognizes him and immediately knows his exact order. she prepares his meal as he takes a seat at the bar. scrambled eggs, two pieces of almost burnt bacon and a warm mug of coffee. black.
"how are you doing this morning, otto?" she asks him conversationally, sliding the mug across the countertop. "the usual, i'm assuming?"
"yes, dear." he replies with a grin, taking the glass into his wrinkled hands. he takes a content sip before continuing on to answer her previously asked question. "i'm doing lovely, actually. my margarette was in a foul mood, though. her favorite flowers in our garden — which is a bush of pretty pink lilacs, are beginning to wilt."
jackie retrieves the rest of his breakfast before passing it over to the man. otto smiles at him, but she frowns in return. "that's a shame. margarette always claimed to love those lilacs whenever you bring her along with you."
"i know, i pity her." otto says around a sigh. however, he seems too happy with his breakfast to remain disappointed about his wife's flowers.
jackie continues to work as otto finishes his meal. only two other customers enter the diner throughout his stay, causing the remainder of her shift to pass by with ease. blake returned back to work a few minutes before she clocked out. jackie gave him a quick kiss as an act of goodbye before leaving to head home.
the journey back to her apartment isn't very far, it's about a ten minute walk. most people would prefer to take a cab, especially after a long shift of working. but jackie refuses to get into any sort of vehicle after what happened to wilson — her twin sister. she does anything and everything in her power to try not to think about the loss. but it's like a drain in her mind, all of her thoughts swirling around and around until they inevitably lead back to the exact thing she was trying to avoid all along.
she walks down the sidewalk, still wearing her apron and name tag. cars pass as they drive down the street, rushing by as blurry shapes. jackie looks up at the tall buildings towering over her, making her feel small.
as kids, she and wilson would often fantasize about getting their own place. they grew up under the care of their single mother, who stressed about money constantly. the twins would try and come up with genius plans to help their mom out, promising her that they would get her away from anything that burdened her. but their mother would just plaster on a smile and assure them that she was okay. jackie and wilson knew better, though, than to believe her. so they kept their plans to themselves, but never stopped making them.
jackie wanted to live in a small town. she wanted to get to know everyone individually, and felt as though she couldn't do that in a big city. but wilson wanted to go to the largest city imaginable. she dreamed about the skyscrapers and the never ending noise of people living their lives. jackie hated the thought of the sounds never ceasing, but she told wilson that she loved the idea — purely to make her sister happy.
and here she is now, living in one of the biggest cities in the country. without her sister to enjoy it with her. wilson was right, the noise doesn't stop, and the skyscrapers are beautiful. but none of it feels worthwhile without her here by jackie's side.

i'm hoping for this book to be a bit shorter bc all of my other books feel unreasonably drawn out imo 😪😪 ( except for all i do but that's bc that book was my baby && i gave it my everything ) anyway this means i'm gonna AIM for it to only be about 20-40 chapters
also !! this chapter was a bit slow but that's bc you guys are supposed to be getting to know the characters and what their normal / everyday lives look like 🥳
