Chapter Six: Flowers
Around two hours after the rain stopped Flynn pulled over to a gas station. Delilah and I got out of the car to stretch our legs. Flynn stood by a charging station and waited for the car to be charged.
Delilah and I headed to a field around the back of the gas station. We sat down in the tall, green grass and beautiful wildflowers. There are so many colors, but purple is the most prevalent color. Yet out of all of the colors I see no white. All the colors are scattered across the green fields.
"It's weird that there's such a beautiful field by such an old and rusty gas station," Delilah says while sitting Indian style in the tall grass and feeling all of the colorful flowers with her hands.
"Yeah, it's really cool. I wish there was a flower field back at Mapletree Road." I mutter while looking around to try and find an orange flower to remind me of home. Delilah understands exactly what I'm thinking: Why am I so strong-willed?
Delilah stands up and heads back over to her car. She checks on it and proceeds to go into the gas station, probably to grab some snacks. I press my hands into the bottom of the field, still absorbing the nature around me. My palms can now feel the damp soil and tall blades of grass. The silvery leaves of the colorful flowers brush up against the back of my hands.
As I press my palms deeper into the soil new buds start to grow upwards at my fingertips. At first, they are just sprouts, but now that I'm seeing this happen I think harder about it, I want it to grow. The sprouts grow into buds, using up most of my energy, but, I want to see full, beautiful flowers! I think and I try and I press, my hands, now deep into the soil.
Finally. White chrysanthemums pop up and out of the buds. They are as white as clouds, or angel wings. My heart is pounding, trying to pump blood to the rest of my body. My breath is unsteady, spritzee, and frantic like I just ran a marathon. I fall back on to the evergreen grass; I feel the droplets of water from the rain, that abruptly stopped a while ago. The droplets pop underneath the back of my hands, which gives me chills up my spine. I take long, deep, calm breaths, still trying to catch it. I'm not sure if Flynn or Delilah or if anyone saw me.
As I sit up, I try to play it cool, like I was just enjoying how nice of a day it is. I look over to my left and see Flynn, he is still standing by Delilah's Tesla. Speaking of which I should go check on Delilah. I head in the gas station and I immediately see her at the candy aisle. "Hey! What you up to?" I ask as I'm turning the corner into the aisle.
"Oh, uh, hey! I'm just grabbing us some sweets for the car ride. Where have you been?" Delilah says, crouching down to grab some Kit Kats.
"I was just picking some flowers out in the field. Look! I found these angel like, white chrysanthemums! Aren't they beautiful?" I say while holding the mysterious flowers that grew from my fingertips.
"Wow! I couldn't even see any white flowers while I was out there. They're absolutely gorgeous." Delilah says we both take a closer look at them. Even though we're doing the same thing, I know we are not thinking the same thing.
Where did these really come from? Did they actually come from my energy? How could they come from my energy? Why weren't there any other chrysanthemums out in the field? Why were these the only white flowers? Why was I so exhausted after these grew? Did growing them actually use energy or was it a figment of my imagination? Flynn interrupts these questions when he opens the gas station door and a little bell rings.
"Hi! the car is ready to go, are you all ready?" Flynn asks while sticking his thumb out behind him, pointing towards the door.
"Uh, yeah, I think so. Delilah?" I mutter, my mind still oozing with wonder. My gaze frantically changes every ten seconds or so.
"Yep! Let's hit the road!" Delilah exclaims, seeming as if she wants to ask me something or talk to me. As we head to the car she obviously tries to tug on me to make me sit with her, confirming that she wants to talk to me. Once in the car, we all sit in different spots than before. Delilah and I sit in the front, I'm driving, and Flynn in the back.
As we drive down the open road we pass many flower fields. Each one, more beautiful than the last. Around thirty minutes out from the gas station Delilah leans closer to me. I knew this was coming at some point, but I'm still not sure what she's going to say. She leans a bit closer and whispers, "Where did those chrysanthemums really come from?"

Hey, what's up buttercups? I just want to thank you for 100+ reads. It really does mean a lot to me. If you have any questions about the book or the characters please feel free to comment! From here on out I will be doing a different definition for each new chapter! Here is the word of the day:
Bonhomie-
(n.) good-natured easy friendliness
I think this would fit Delilah so well! This reminds of how her and Celeste met. Delilah was very friendly and kind to Celeste and immediately invited Celeste to sit with her.
