chapter eleven

Are you sure you've got a taxi, ordered?" Jackie asked. Sephy nodded. "And all your stuff is packed?" Jackie added, to which came another nod.

"Don't worry, everything's ready for Cardiff." Sephy confirmed with a smile.

Jackie welled up. "Oh, I'm going to miss you so much, Sephy..." They hugged.

"I'm going to miss you too, Jackie..." tears came streaming down Sephy's cheeks "Thanks for letting me live here. You have a lovely house..."

The backdoor opened, and Martin joined them in the kitchen. Shirtless, of course.

"Martin, it's 9 in the morning, put a top on!" Jackie sighed.

Martin huffed and shrugged. "Don't blame me, blame the heat! Blame the sun!"

Sephy laughed, wiping her tears away and hugging Martin. "I'm gonna miss you too, Martin. You really made me laugh..."

Martin was slightly taken aback by this embrace, but returned the gesture. "Oh, well, at least we'll still have your lingering hair and skin follicles in the spare room." He nodded. Sephy laughed and pulled away.

"My taxi will be here in like five minutes." Sephy smiled, wiping her eyes.

Jackie dusted her hands off. "I'll just go and check you haven't left anything upstairs, love." She touched Sephy's shoulder affectionately as she passed her. Martin nodded, following his wife upstairs to presumably help.

Sephy smiled to herself, waltzing around the kitchen. There was even a photo of her on the fridge that Jonny had taken, and Jackie had lovingly framed and stuck to the fridge. Sephy looked gormless but happy in the photo, so she didn't mind the Goodmans keeping it.

She moved into the living room to reminisce over some more photos. Sephy looked at the photoshoot pictures, and smirked at the ones of the boys. She knew she was going to miss them an awful lot. Especially Jonny.

She thought about Jonny for a moment. Sephy had never imagined she would fall in love with her childhood best friend, but after last night she knew it was true. And she would miss him the most.

At that minute, the doorbell rang. Sephy sighed and went to answer it.
"Oh, hello, Jim." She forced a smile.

"Hello... Sally." Jim replied hesitantly, keeping Wilson at a distance.

Sephy pursed her lips. "It's Sephy, actually..." She bit her lip "I'm leaving in a minute. My taxi will be here any minute."

"Taxi, yes." Jim nodded "Off to Scotland, hope you've learned your... French."

Sephy shook her head and laughed, looking down at the floor. "It's Wales, actually. And I'm sure my French will be good enough for them."

"Right... well... Tell your mother I said hello..." Jim stepped back, tugging Wilson along with him "C'mon Wilson..."

Sephy furrowed her brows. "I'm not Jackie's daughter... But I'll tell her you came round." She smiled, shutting the door on him and sighing in relief.

There was a buzzing from her pocket, and Sephy grabbed her phone out from her jeans. It was the taxi.

"Martin, Jackie - my taxi is here!" Sephy called up, and suddenly they came rushing down.

"Oh, travel safe, love!" Jackie kissed Sephy's cheeks "Call me as soon as you get there!"

Martin was less obvious in his affection, but Sephy gave him a quick hug, before turning to the door. And for the last time, she twisted the handle up and slipped out, closing it gently behind her.

The taxi driver helped her with her suitcase, laying it in the boot, and opening the door for Sephy. She slid into the back seat and buckled up. Sephy sighed and leaned back in her seat, looking out the window.

It was a steady journey at first, and Sephy watched as the Goodman household became a tiny speck in the distance. She sighed once more and sat in the melancholy silence.

Sephy closed her eyes, but all she could hear was some yelling in the distance. She furrowed her brows. It sounded like Jonny's whiney voice. She opened her eyes and turned around, looking out the car window.

Jonny was chasing the taxi down the road, running as fast as his legs would carry him and yelling "Stop the taxi! Stop the pissing taxi!"

"Hey, can you just stop the taxi for a minute please?" Sephy spoke to the driver, who immediately pulled over.

Jonny caught up, wheezing for breath as he stopped on the pavement at the side of the taxi. Sephy rolled her window down and leant out to talk to him.

"Jonny? What the hell are you doing? Why are you chasing after me?" She looked at him.

He leant in towards her. "I just really don't want you to go! Infact, you can't go! What about us?"

"What do you mean 'us'?" Sephy threw her arms about in distress.

Jonny sighed. "I mean, last night... I thought you loved me?" he looked at her "And...I just...well... I thought we could get together... I thought we should get together..."

"Jonny, you're not making leaving very easy..." Sephy rubbed her temples.

"Growing up with a stupid, childish crush on you wasn't 'easy' either." Jonny looked away "I've loved you since before I even liked girls. I've wanted this since I was eleven. I just always hoped we would... you know..."

Sephy narrowed her eyes. "What, Jonny?"

"Get together." Jonny sighed.

Sephy sighed and reached out the window, taking Jonny's hands in her own. "I do love you... and I do want to be with you... but I'm going to Cardiff, I've got a job. My dream job. And I've never even had a job before, this means so much to me..."

"I'm sorry, I know this isn't fair... Infact, this whole thing is ridiculous..." Jonny huffed, his fingers intertwined with Sephy's.

"Very ridiculous." Sephy confirmed, stroking her thumb over Jonny's knuckles affectionately "I'm gonna miss you, Jonny..."

"I know." Jonny nodded, but quickly corrected himself "I-I mean... I'm gonna miss you too." He half laughed, looking at Sephy.

Sephy smiled sadly, taking her hands back from Jonny's, and wiping a tear away. "See you, then..." She looked back at him, rolling up her window. The driver started the car up, and they set off again.

Jonny watched her leave, right up until the car disappeared from view. "Yeah, see you..." He sighed.

Jonny stumbled through the door. He sighed, hanging his coat up and trundling on through to the kitchen.

"Jonny?" Jackie looked up as Jonny joined her in the living room "What are you doing here? It's Saturday morning."

Jonny huffed and flopped down onto the sofa, snuggling up to his mum almost instinctively. It took a good ten minutes to explain to her what just happened.

"...So she still went to Cardiff?" Jackie frowned and put her arm around Jonny's shoulders "Oh, Jonny-Boo..."

"Don't 'Oh, Jonny-Boo' me." Jonny huffed, folding his arms over his chest "I didn't expect a fairytale ending or anything... I just, sort of, wished she'd stayed..."

Jackie sighed and nodded. "I remember when you brought her round for dinner after school and you'd push Adam out of his seat just so you could sit next to her at the table."

Jonny couldn't help smile a little at the memory. "Do you think she noticed?"

"She was probably too busy tripping over her own foot or something." Jackie couldn't help giggle at Sephy's infamous clumsiness. She she stood up from the sofa and dusted herself off "I'll go make you a hot chocolate..."

Jonny leant back against the sofa as he was left alone. He tilted his head up and stared at the ceiling, only to be reminded of the real world by the sound of the door opening.

"Dad?" Jonny called, huffing "I swear to god, if you've brought fox shit into the house again..."

Sephy appeared at the living room door. "Sorry, I'm not 'dad'." She laughed nervously and shrugged.

Jonny shot up and marched over to her. "Sephy? What are you-... I mean, why would-... I thought you were-..." He could barely string a sentence together.

"So...it's a long story but..." Sephy began, taking Jonny's hands in her own "...I just couldn't leave. You've been my best friend since school, and in these last 6 months or so you've just become such a huge part of my life. You make me smile so much and I just couldn't imagine living so many miles away from you. I know there's my job, but living with you and your family at my doorstep is more important - I love you all so much."

"Especially me though, yeah?" Jonny bit his lip.

Sephy smirked. "Especially you. And now I've got nowhere to live, I was kind of hoping I could use the spare room in your apartment for a bit. I mean, I love this house, but I just thought it'd be nice to be roomies." She teased, knocking Jonny's shoulder.

Jonny hummed and shrugged. "Okay, well... I was kind of hoping we could go on a date. I know this great Chinese place. If you come on the date, I'll give you my spare room."

"Maybe I won't need it." Sephy chided "deal?" She offered her arm.

Jonny gave a toothy grin and nodded. He took her arm.

"Deal."
