29. she tried

I tossed my belongings into the trunk as I was getting ready to leave New York. Sasha got me my stuff for what I need and im heading to Guatemala. The heavy rain poured down, as I drove to get out. My phone rings and I looked to see Rivers name.

"I told you to only-"

"Im being watched." I stopped the car and my heart was beating faster.

"By who?" I went to track him but it took forever due to the storm. "Where are you?"

"Not by Dreykov thats for sure." He assured me. "There was a bus behind me, stopped a few blocks back and now there's something following me."

"River you need to tell me where you are." I gripped the wheel. "Go somewhere where-"

"Im going to let them take me."

"River no." I raised my voice.

"I know you'll find me." I heard grunting and swords. I can hear River groan in pain.

"River!" I stepped on the gas and head to one place, Matts. This has to be Nobus men. Swords? I mean who else. I ran up the building stairs and opened his door. I saw Stick tied to a chair.

"Devon?" Matt pops out from the kitchen. Once I was going to tell him, Elektra pops out of his room.

"What are you doing here?" I head to her. "I thought I warned you."

"I wanted to see if you own up to your word." She comments back.

"I don't like breaking them!" I charged at her until Matt pulls me back and holds me.

"Stop!" He yells at us. Matt lets me go and I didn't break eye contact with her. "What is going on?"

"Your girlfriend broke into my place and warned me if i got near you-"

"I guess I have to remind you again." Matt pulls me back again and takes me away from her. "They took River!" I shouted.

"Whos River?" Stick asked.

"What? Who?"

"Whatever you're having problems with." If it is Nobu, thats was more Matts problem than mine. Nobu and his men weren't on my list. I only worked with them for Fisk. "They took him!"

"Damn it." Matt swears and turns away.

"Im coming with." I said to him. "Whatever it is, im going." Matt turns back to me.

"You're not." He warns me.

"Hes right, you cant." Stick talks again.

"Shut it old man, i bet I can beat your ass into ash." I turned to him, annoyed by him butting in.

"She's a widow."

"I can smell the trauma." Stick huffs and gags. I bit my lip and was about slap him but Matt stops me again. "What happened? Got beaten up too much you forgot your manners?" I rolled my eyes.

"Make him shut up or Ill throw him off the fire escape."

"Lets see what you got princess."

"Enough Stick." Matt shushes him.

"Why, why did they take him?" I said to Matt. He sighs and takes my hand.

"Nobu." I knew it. Im going to kill each and one of them. "They're taking the people Daredevil has saved."

"You didn't save River." I shook my head.

"I saved you." Why River? But why? I thought about it and it clicked.

"Devons a boy name." I let out a sharp inhale. "Im going to kill them. If they hurt him, i swear."

"No killing." He tells me. "Nobu deserves to rot. We cant let him go off that easy."

"Fine." He kisses my hand. "Your way. Why are they doing this?"

"They need the black sky, which is your best pal, Elektra. Thats why they took them." Stick talks again. My body slowly turns to her.

"You?" I frowned at the woman behind me. "My brother is hurt because of you." I charged at her and smacked her head against the wall and used her twin sai against her.

"Alright!" Matt stops me. "Enough. I get it you're angry" i got off of her and tossed the weapon across the room.

"Im going to save my brother." I told him. "Im going either you like it or not."

We stood on-top of a roof to let Matt get a hearing on where they might be. Elektra paced around while I stayed behind Matt. He tried and tried.

"The people they took arent the target. They're bait. The Hands trying to lure me in."

"Its her that they want." I pointed at Elektra. "You're the only thing that is in their way."

"Those people are innocent. They got Karen, your brother, i mean, who else." He stands up. "Im not letting anything happen to them. I cant abandon them. We gotta get ahead of this thing before anyone gets hurt." He started to breathe heavily, so pressured. I placed my hand on his cheek.

"Slow your breath. You're breathing to fast and hard, it clouds your mind. Focus." He starts to breathe on and out. "You'll find them. Slow your heart a bit, cloud everything that is going on. You'll find them Matthew." He tried and quickly stands up.

"I cant hear anything! The electricity in this building is too loud!" He paces. "The city is pulsing like-"

"Matt, this is your city. Calm it down. Block it out. Block anything that is not essential, okay?" I paced my hand on his lower stomach. He grabs it and he tilts his head. He's doing it. "Now, one at a time." His head lifted up. Matt sprints and we followed after him. We jumped roof to roof. We finally made and we see an abandoned building below us.

"This is it. Theres police below. Two officers already dead. Fifteen, twenty hostages inside."

"Nobus men?" Elektra asked.

"Yeah, they can hide their hearts but, when theres this many of them, theyre buzzing like a beehive."

"How many are we talking about?" I turned on my widow bites and pulled my hair up.

"I dont know. Could be an army." Thats nothing.

"Can you isolate Nobu?"

"No."

"We cant move until we're sure hes here." I forced a laugh.

"I dont care. My brother and my friend are in there, god  knows what they're doing to them." I spat.

"Im not here for them. I came to take down Nobu and you said youd help." Elektra said.

"I know and I will. Elektra, but right now, the people in that building-"

"They were used to draw us out. Im sorry Matthew but saving them wouldn't help us." I glanced at her.

"But itll help me." I jumped down and threw my grappling hooking for a safe landing. Matt met up with me and we walked in. "She's a bundle of joy. You dated that?" I told him.

"Not my proudest moments in life. Are you sure about this?" He grabs my arm and pulls me back to him.

"This is my time to show that maybe im not what they say I am. I can change." I unlocked the door and we walked in. I heard yelling and we got in. We started beating the men and I tossed them out the window. I used my bites on one and Matt hit another one.

"Go to the door and take a right!" I saw River. I immediately ran to him, hugging him.

"You okay? They didn't hurt you?" I checked for anything. River hugs me again.

"I knew you'll find me." We touched foreheads and sighed. "Come on, lets go."

"I cant. Go." I pushed him out and as I do, Karen sees me.

"Devon?" I stood there, looking away from her. This is going to be a great time to explain to her and maybe Foggy later.

"Go." I pushed her out too. River and her ran out together. Matt and I stayed in the room to fight more. They swung their swords and Elektra came in, stabbing them.

"I was bored." We fought again, they kept coming.

"The only way out is up. Lets head to the roof." I followed and ran up. Elektra was too fast, and I can hear the men following from behind. Matt and I found a room and took a moment. "Im not going to lie to you, theres a lot more coming." I put my hands on my knees.

"Great. This is great." I pant. "One things for sure, we're gonna die." I slide down the wall and closed my eyes.

"Want to end it here or the roof?" Elektra asked me.

"Fresh air sounds about nice." We head up more stairs and once we got up, matt swears. "what?"there was banging on the door, shouting.

"Too many to count. Armed, packing katakanas, couple of longbows. More coming up from blow. Same weapons." How many are theyre, seriously. Are they spawning? "Id say we've got a couple of minutes before they break through that door." I laughed to myself as I slide down the wall. Matt kneels down. "You shouldn't be here. You're only here for River."

"And leave you alone with her? Not taking any chances." I took a couple deep breaths. "This is a cool way to die." We can hear the banging. "Lets do this yeah?"

"Wait. Wait for one second. So what if..." he takes off his helmet. I got to see him. His pretty brown eyes, that messy hair. "What if... from now on if if we can make it. Wherever you run, i run with you." My face drops.

"No. You cant be serious. You cant. They'll find us. Dreykov, he'll have us, you, killed. Yelena will kill you."

"I've never been more serious. This... Devon, you are part of me that I need. And you're the only one who gets it. Without you, im not alive. Im not. Not really. Because I love you. I always have and always will. No matter what you have done, Im still going to love you. I don't know what we are together and if we have any chance in the future... i do know that im free with you. Like with no one else." I shook my head and placed my hand on his chest.

"We hide from yourselves. We don't let anyone in."

"You. I let you in. And its the same for you, you let me in. Think about it. What if this isnt the end? What if its just the beginning?"

"No. He'll find us. They always do."

"No, we'll keep moving. We'll change identities, we'll hide. They'll never catch us. Not as along we are together." I laughed and smiled at him. It's nice. I like it. "What do you say?"

"I say, lest go to Ohio. Yeah? I know a place. There's a tree house where our kids can play. Or we can go to Greece. Madrid. But I want Ohio."

"We can go to Ohio. I've never been further north than 116th Street so..." we laughed.

"Because you love it here."

"And I'd give my life for it but theres one thing in this world that makes me feel more alive. And thats you."

"Im the Red Widow Matt."

"Yeah and im the Devil of Hells Kitchen." We both laughed. "The airports just a cab fare away. All we gotta do is survive whatevers waiting for us behind that door."

"Lets get out of here, yeah?" I gave him a kiss before we head out. Elektra waited for us and we saw Nobus men waiting.

"They're here to kill Matthew, not me ."

"Over my dead body." The line of his men stood perfectly still. We started to go in and they shot fire. Nobu stops them. He walks across the roof.

"No one escapes destiny. You belong to us. And you, belong in the ground." And then looks at me. "I could care less about you."

"Well the feelings mutual." I sighed. He yells as he came swing at us. More of his men fought and we tried to stop them. I got stabbed by arrows and cut by swords. I looked at Elektra and she looks at me. She charges at me. The hell is she doing!

"Elektra, stop! I don't want to kill you!" I pinned her to the ground, trying so hard not to knock her out. But she wiggled and kicked me, sending me, stumbling, holding my nose. She ran to me, just so much hate in her eyes. I elbowed her in the face and stopped her from hurting me, pushing her back.

I gasped as i felt a sharp pressure in my lower abdomen. Elektra had her twin sai in me, smirking that she finally won. Matt stops everything and sensed that something bad happened. I was lost for words, i was too shocked about it, holding the knife with hands.

"Play along."

"Elektra! No!" She spun around and kicked me off the ledge. I reached out as my legs hit the cold brick wall. All i saw was Matt running towards me, hoping he would catch me in time. I closed my eyes and smiled as memories rushed in. Natasha and Yelena, Alexi and Melina, River and my parents. Matt.

The sound of her body hitting the metals and the fire escapes, frightened Matt. Once as her body hit the ground, He tried so hard to listen to her heartbeat, nothing but a slow, faint one. She tried to be good. For the first time, she didn't fight back. She tried.

"Devon!" Before he can jump down, Nobu got a hold of him.

As Matt finished his fight, fighting for her and with the help of Castle, he headed down to Devon who laid still. He pulls her to his lap. The sierens went off and he knew he cant take her.

"Im so sorry." He cries into her. "Im sorry. Im sorry. I love you. I love you so much." He kisses her lips and pushes himself off and runs off before he gets caught. He hated himself leaving her there, alone. He never forgave herself. He finds Mahoney, he pulls him to the side. "The Red Widow is dead." He limps out of the scene and silently cries as he leaves.

There was a ringing in my ear as I woke up. Everything was a blur and i laid there. I heard shuffling, stomping. I noticed the big nose criminal. Frank. He picks me up and takes me to his truck. I was too out of it to speak, I kept hearing Frank talking to me, trying to keep me awake. But all was so blurry and i was in pain.

I knew he wasn't going to take me to the hospital. Hes wanted and I was on the hit list so he took me to a small apartment, fit only for one person. He laid me on the couch and started to patch me up. Tried, he was sloppy but it did stop the bleeding. I was pale, hanging on. Frank holds my head up with his hand.

"Listen to me, im gonna take take of ya, i got ya." He takes a moment to look at me, sighing and tearing up a bit.
