❛ WINNING ❜
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN !
"NEXT UP, HAWK VERSUS KEENE"
Hawk had a confident smirk on his face as he watched his opponent jump onto the stage.
"Something wrong, Sensei?" Hawk asked, noticing his silence.
Johnny glanced between the two boys before shaking his head Hawk, "Show him what you got."
Hawk nodded, doing his handshake with Miguel before taking his place on the stage. "Prepare to face the fury of the hawk," he declared, walking to the center. Charlie shook her head and laughed.
The competitors bowed to the referee and then to each other. "Fighting positions," the referee commanded, placing his hand in front of the two fighters. They crouched slightly, fists raised. "Ready, and fight!"
Robby attempted to kick Hawk in the face, but Hawk swiftly blocked the attack. Despite Cobra Kai's ruled of 'strike first' it was Robby that was doing most of the striking.
Hawk managed to block the remainder of the punches, before finally grabbing his torso and sending Robby to the ground, finishing it with a punch.
Charlie winced at the sight, her eyes fixed on Robby's face. The two boys quickly stood again and resumed the fight.
Charlie's attention diverted onto Daniel LaRusso, who had risen from his seat and began shouting words of encouragement to Robby. She rubbed her father's arm after seeing the hurt look on his face, before refocusing on the fight.
Hawk took the initiative this time, launching hits at Robby. The fighters circled each other until finally, Robby managed to land a kick to Hawk's face. Charlie nodded, torn between which side to cheer for.
"You're lucky, it's gonna be your last," Hawk taunted, easily towering over Robby from his height, with a glare.
"Why?" Robby scoffed. "You leaving early to fix that stupid haircut?"
Charlie gasped when Hawk kicked Robby from behind, sending him to the floor.
"You're disqualified."
"Bullshit!" Hawk attempted to break free from the referee's hold and Charlie quickly ran over, dragging him away.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" she yelled, pulling him off the mats.
Hawk looked at her, confusion in his eyes, before turning to his sensei, who was now returning to his side.
"What the hell you thinking, man?" Johnny yelled at him.
"What was I supposed to do, be a pussy?" Hawk retorted, causing Charlie to scoff. She was happy that he had found confidence but she hated this new persona he had.
Hawk stormed off in frustration, and Charlie followed.
"He wasn't even looking!" she yelled, but he kept his back turned, refusing to acknowledge her. "What was all that for, huh? He only insulted your haircut. How fragile is your eg-"
"He's training with the enemy," Hawk finally yelled before turning to face her. "He's working with the LaRusso's. Aren't they like your sworn enemies too?"
Charlie laughed, shaking her head. "Yeah, right. I forgot that my dad's issues had everything to do with me."
"Yeah, whatever. He deserved it for what he did to Miguel," Hawk tore his eyes off her.
"He went to dinner with her family and took her to a party and what, that give you the right to dislocate his shoulder?" Charlie's voice rose, but she didn't care.
Hawk gave her a puzzled look before furrowing his brows. "Why are you defending him?"
"He's my—" Charlie began, but her words were cut short as someone called out her name.
"Charlie!"
She turned to see her mother standing at the end of the hall, and let out a sigh. "Look, I'm not defending him. I'm just saying that this whole 'Hawk' thing maybe isn't a good idea. Being horrible doesn't make you cool."
With those words, Charlie walked away, ignoring her mother's calls. "Charlie! Hello? Charl—"
"What?" Charlie whipped around, her patience wearing thin.
"Aren't you going to say hello?" Monique awkwardly smiled, looking at the bruise that had now appeared on Charlie's face, "How's the cheek? Your friend said that the boy hit you pretty hard."
"Well, if you paid attention or came on time, you would know," Charlie spat out as her mother rolled her eyes.
"I'm here now, aren't I?" her mother defended herself, shaking her shoulders but her daughter's face didn't change.
"Mom, I'm out. Done. It's between Robby and Miguel now," she let out a breath, "Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to watch."
She walked away, observing her mother leaving the building in a huff.
Charlie hurried inside when she heard the cheers. As she entered, the boys were already fighting.
Robby seemed to be holding his own, but he kept clutching his arm and wincing from time to time.
Both boys had already scored a point. Aisha explained what had happened so far, and Charlie nodded.
Once again, she took a shaky breath. She wanted to root for both sides, but of course, only one could win.
Miguel struck Robby's shoulder, causing Charlie to grit her teeth. She winced as she saw Robby fall to the ground and receive another punch.
Daniel called for a timeout and quickly spoke to Robby, offering him advice. The boy, despite clutching his side, decided to continue. He blocked each blow Miguel aimed his way.
Robby attempted to score a point, but it was declared out of bounds. They continued, with Miguel continuously targeting Robby's shoulder.
Suddenly, Robby lifted himself with one hand and delivered a two-legged kick to Miguel, earning a point. Charlie couldn't help but gasp, trying her best not to cheer, but a small smile tugged at her lips.
Robby tried to help Miguel up, expecting him to grab it but instead the boy latched onto his arm and pulled him down, receiving a warning.
Miguel walked over to his team, "Sensei, I found his weakness. It's his shoulder."
Charlie placed a hand on her head, trying her best to remain happy for Miguel, but worried about Robby.
"I understand you want to win, but it has to be done the right way. You don't have to fight dirty," Johnny told Miguel, attempting to calm him without telling him about his relationship to Robby.
"Dirty?" Miguel scrunched his face. "There's nothing dirty about winning, Sensei. You taught me that. Don't worry, I've got this. No mercy."
He returned to his spot, and Charlie and Johnny exchanged a weary look.
"Whoever wins the next point will be our new champion!" Daryl announced.
"It's 2-2. Next point wins," the referee stated. "Okay, good luck to both of you. Ready... and fight!"
They clashed, this time with more intensity than before, each fighting for the win. Robby nearly scored a point with a kick, but Miguel grabbed it and struck him in the shoulder.
Charlie sighed, unable to watch them hurt each other any longer so turned away slightly.
After a few moments, she turned back around and saw Robby on the floor, with Miguel standing triumphantly over him.
Cobra Kai and the audience began cheering as the referee approached Miguel and raised his arm, declaring him the winner.
While everyone was focused on Miguel and celebrating, Charlie quickly turned to Robby. "Are you okay?"
He looked at Miguel, then back at her, and laughed, "so these are the people you're friends with?"
Confused, she stared at him for a moment before he walked away. She waited for him to say something else, but when he didn't, she joined in with the cheering.
Charlie pulled Miguel into a hug, patting his back before he was handed the trophy. He raised it in the air and yelled, "I just want to say that if it wasn't for my sensei, i wouldn't be here so this is for sensei Johnny Lawrence and cobra Kai"
