"I just can't get over how grown up you are." The waitress said to Bella as she set down plates of food for everyone. "And so gorgeous."

Bella smiled. A man in about his mid fifties or sixties walked over to the table.

"Hey, Bella. Remember me?" He asked. The three kids just sat there awkwardly. Bella looked at her dad. "I played Santa, one year," he continued.

"Yeah. Waylon, she hasn't had a Christmas here since she was four," Charlie answered for her.

"I bet I made an impression though, didn't I?" He asked.

"You always do." Charlie retorted, shaking the salt onto his food.

"Butt-Crack Santa?" Bella asked, laughing.

"Hey, kids love those little bottles though." Waylon told the waitress, who had still been standing there.

"All right let them eat, Waylon." She said, dismissing him. "As soon as you're done, I'll bring you guys Bella's favorite, remember?" She asked Bella. "Your dad still has it. Every Thursday."

Everyone said their thank-you's and the waitress left. Aaron sighed and dug into his food.

Evelyn had decided to spend the night at Bella's house, and Aaron had already gone home. She was working on homework while Bella was talking to her mom. Her mom was practically screaming into the phone, so Evelyn heard everything she was saying. Bella's mom had lost her phone charger so she was using a crappy payphone.

"Tell me more about your school. What are the kids like? Are there any cute guys? Are they being nice to you?"

Bella sighed softly. "Well, they're all very welcoming."

"Uh-oh. Tell me all about it."

"It doesn't even matter." Bella replied, slamming her books shut and shoving them to the side.

"Honey, yes it does."

"I've got homework to do. I'll talk to you later."

"Okay. I love you."

"Love you too." Bella said, and hung up.

"Let's get this party started!" Evelyn yelled, causing Bella to laugh.

Evelyn sat with Bella on her truck, while Aaron left with his friends to go to the field. Little did they know, they were both watching for two brothers. Jasper showed up, driving a Jeep, which Emmett was sitting, of course, on top of. But Edward wasn't in the Jeep. Bella didn't see him get out of the red convertible Rosalie and Alice had shown up in, either. He didn't show up at all.

"Where's Edwardo?" Evelyn asked.

"I- I don't know." Bella stammered.

( a week later )

Bella, Evelyn, and Eric walked to Biology together a week later. Edward still hadn't shown up, much to Bella's dismay.

"So, prom committee is a chick thing, but I gotta cover it for the paper anyway. And they need a guy to help choose the music, so I need your playlists." Eric said to us as we were hanging up our coats. "Hey I was wondering, do either of you have... uh a... date... to--"

"What's up Arizona, Texas? How you likin' the rain, girls?" Mike interrupted, shaking his wet hat all over us.

"Yeah, Mike, hey, you're real cute man." Eric said sarcastically, swinging his earbuds, as we walked to our seats. Bella hesitated before walking to her seat though, because the seat next to her was being occupied by someone.

Edward.

Bella walked over and sat down. Evelyn eyed them. They seemed to be making conversation, so she looked away contently, and smiled to herself.

"Onion root tip cells, that's what's on your slides right now. Okay? So, separate and label them into the phases of mitosis, and the first partners to get it right are going to the the golden onion." Mr. Molina explained, holding up the onion and cradling it as if it were a baby.

The students began and Bella and Edward started talking more. Evelyn would look up every now and then from what she was doing with Jasper, who was really good at this, to look at Bella and Edward. She could tell their conversation was extremely awkward. She also noticed how black Jasper's eyes were when she first met him. They looked different during the class. They resembled a light gold color.  When the bell rang, Bella and Edward received the golden onion; they were the first ones done. Evelyn decided to walk with Jasper. They were walking to the lockers when Jasper finally said something.

"Why did you move here?"

"Wow, that was rude." Evelyn replied, rolling her eyes.

"Sorry, I didn't mean it like that." He said, slightly smiling. "I just never got much of a chance to ask."

"The military." She sighed. "But my dad's retiring soon, so I don't think we'll be going anywhere for a while. My mom likes all of the trees here. She doesn't really like the cold, though. But I love it. I'm just glad to be away from all of the heat in Texas." Evelyn looked at Jasper and then down at the ground. "Sorry I'm telling you my whole like story here." She laughed.

"No, it's okay. I don't mind." He said.

"Hey, did you get contacts?" She asked him suddenly.

"What?"

"Your eyes were black before. And now they're almost gold."

"Oh, uh, it's the... the fluorescence." He replied. And with that, he walked away.

Bella and Evelyn walked to her truck, talking about how horrible their day went. Bella looked over at the Cullens, in which Edward was looking at her and Jasper was looking at Evelyn. Then the two girls heard a horn blasting and they turned around to see what was happening. Tyler's van was spiraling right towards them. All of a sudden, one pair of hands came and shielded them from the van, while another pair shot out and stopped the van from crushing them. They looked up, frightened. Edward was holding them. Jasper had just stopped a van and pushed it away with one hand, and left a dent where it had been in the side of the van. Then the two immediately got up, jumped over the truck, and left. Everyone came dashing to the spot where they sat, screaming.

"Evelyn! Bella!" Was all they heard as they watched the rest of the Cullens' eyes open wide, get in their car, and leave.

"Dial 911!" Someone said.

"I already called, they'll be over here soon." A boy replied.

Two people helped the girls up, and Aaron dashed over.

Was he crying? Evelyn thought he was, but she couldn't tell.

"Guys, I'm so sorry, I tried to stop." Tyler said, rolling the window down and sticking his chin out. He had blood running down the side of his head.

"I've got 911 on the phone right now." Another girl said.
