Laura's POV
"How long until we arrive at your safe house Ada?" I inquired, while she was still driving on the freeway. Passing by countless infected wandering the roads and numerous wrecked vehicles along the way.
"In approximately ten to fifteen minutes Laura, it won't be long," Ada replied, using a reassuring tone of voice.
I leaned back into my car seat, in an attempt to relax. After everything I've been through in the past short couple of hours, I was very exhausted, but I still felt exuberant at the same time from all that running and fighting. My limbs were as sore as hell, throbbing with fatigue. I'm practically drenched in sweat and blood, and all I wanted to do right now was take a shower and then sleep. At least get a couple of hours of a peaceful night's sleep. It was all very tiring, yet I could still feel the remaining adrenaline coursing through my whole body. Preventing me from falling asleep completely.
"You alright kiddo?" Rebecca inquired, as she glanced over at me.
"Yeah. Just tired from all of this right now, that's all," I replied, as I yawned softly.
"Try to get some sleep Laura, you're gonna need it," Tyler added.
I nodded my head at both of them, as I slowly closed my eyes. Resting my head against the side of the vehicle. Even if I wasn't able to fall asleep completely, just closing my eyes for just a few minutes did help me conserve what was left of my strength. I started to drift off, until I was awoken and startled by the sound of multiple gun shots, a windshield shattering, and a bloodcurdling scream.
I opened my eyes straight away. Peering in front of me and seeing the front windshield of the SUV completed shattered. With bits and pieces of it scattered all over upfront. I rapidly shifted my gaze over to Rebecca, while she was clutching the lower right side of her abdomen in pain.
Rebecca took out a medium-sized pad from her first aid kit attached to her utility belt, applying it to a certain spot on her abdomen. I sat up from my seat—glancing at the lower right side of Rebecca's abdomen. Seeing a small red velvet dot start to form, as it got bigger and bigger by the second. Traveling down her shirt and spilling onto her pants.
It was blood.
Rebecca was bleeding and trying to control it. By using both of her gloved hands—holding the pad onto her abdomen and applying constant pressure to the wound. Suppressing most of the bleeding to the best of her ability. I started freaking out a little about what just happened, not knowing how to react to it.
"Heads up, we've got company," Ada announced.
I redirected my gaze back behind us—seeing three black armored hummers trying to tailgate us. Two of them had machine guns attached to hood of the vehicle, with a single soldier operating each of them. Inside them, I noticed that each of the soldiers were wearing black gas masks, along with other black tactical gear and equipment.
"Rebecca! Are you okay?! What's going on?!" I asked her, using a worried tone of voice.
"I'm fine Laura, don't worry about it," Rebecca tried to reassure me, as she groaned in pain.
"Everybody, get down!" Emile yelled, as she held on gently to Lilly. Holding the little girl down.
The six of us ducked simultaneously, eight as multiple bullets pierced through the back of the car window. Flying above us and into our vehicle. Shattering the back windshield into millions of tiny pieces.
"Mommy, I'm scared..." Lilly whimpered, quivering in fear.
"It's okay honey, stay down until I say otherwise," Ada told her daughter.
Lilly listened to her, keeping her head down. While Emile was trying her best to comfort her and keep her safe.
"They found us Laura, we have to lose them now or this will end of like a wild goose chase all over the city," Ada asserted, maintaining her grip on the steering wheel.
"Is there anything in here we could use that could help remedy our current situation?" Moira asked Ada.
"There is in fact. Check under your seats for any heavy metal cases."
Tyler, Moira, and I started feeling underneath our seats. Searching for anything bulky and heavy like Ada described. Once I felt something matching her description, I grabbed it with both of my hands. Pulling out a medium-sized case. I placed it onto my lap, unhooked the latches that locked that case in place.
As I quickly opened it, there was an AK-12 223 with numerous clips, filled entirely with ammo for the weapon, inside the case. While I was carefully handling my assault rifle, Tyler pulled out a M4A1 assault carbine from his case, and Moira found a AK-200-M4 rifle out of her case too. I didn't know how Ada was able to get a hold of these type of guns, but the woman certainly knows how to be prepared.
"You better know how to use them, it's gonna be a bumpy ride from here on out," Ada stated, applying more pressure on the accelerator.
I quickly make sure that my gun is fully loaded, then cocked it. "I'm all ready locked and loaded sister," I affirmed, as I smirked mischievously.
"Let's do this," Tyler added, as he cocked his rifle too.
I turned around in my seat, immediately beginning to fire my rifle at the enemy vehicles through the broken windshield in the back. I directed my aim first at one of the gunners, before he could start firing back at us. Once I killed the first one with various gunshots to his chest—I targeted the other gunner, killing him with single shot to his head.
The hummers on the left and right were gaining speed on us rapidly. Quicker than I thought they would. Soon, they caught up to us. Close enough where one hummer positioned itself on the lane to the left of us, and the other one on other lane on the right of us. With each second passing, they were steadily trying to enclose in on us.
Coming from the hummer on the left of us, one soldier rolled down the black-tinted window. Attempting to fire with his MP5 sub machine gun at us. Tyler managed to kill him right away, before he could even pull the trigger. The same thing happened on the right side of us too, Moira was able to take care of the other enemy operative before it could get out of hand. As I foresaw what was going to happen next, Ada yelled,
"Hold on!" As she put the pedal to the medal.
We sped quickly out of between the two hummers, before the they could ram into us. Instead of slamming into us, they accidentally rammed into each other instantly before they could change their mind. Resulting in them wrecking. Gliding off into one of the buildings on the side of the road. Leaving only one vehicle left on our tail. Right as I was reloading my rifle, Ada spoke up,
"Laura, let's wrap this up so we can get the show on the road. There's another weapon case stored underneath your seat that'll blow them away, literally. Take it out."
I clicked the safety on the gun—setting it aside on my seat and began looking for the supposed weapon. I felt another metal case right away, grabbing it and pulling it out from beneath the seat, then placing it on top of my lap.
When I opened it, my lips curled into a mischievous smirk, as I marveled at the weapon inside. I took out the M203 grenade launcher from inside the case, along with three grenades to load it with. I honestly was gonna have fun using this stupendous weapon for once. I loaded the grenade launcher, and turned around. Aiming it strategically, as I had my eyes locked on my target.
The first time I fired, I missed the vehicle by a few feet. Only because they swerved out of the way to avoid getting hit. I quickly reloaded the grenade launcher with another grenade to try again. The second time I almost got them, but I aimed too low at ground below them, causing me to miss them again.
After I reloaded it once again, I adjusted my aim at the hummer, so I wouldn't miss this time. 'I better make this count, since it's the last grenade. I can't afford to screw up now.' With my finger over the trigger and my eyes set on my target, I yelled,
"Hasta la vista baby!" I fired the grenade launcher at the last standing hummer.
The grenade pierced through the windshield of the vehicle—blowing up rapidly on impact. Killing everyone and blowing up everything inside the now newly wretched piece of debris, that ended up crashing onto the side of the road far behind us. Emile let go of Lilly, as they both sat up slowly.
"Is everybody okay?" Ada asked all of us. Everybody nodded their heads.
"Are you okay honey?" Ada asked her daughter. Glancing at her through the rear view mirror.
"I'm okay Mommy," Lilly replied, not sounding as panicked anymore.
Ada smiled reassuringly at the fact that her daughter was safe, unharmed from the small battle.
"Jeez Laura, where'd you learn to operate weaponry like that???" Rebecca asked me, as I stored the grenade launcher back into it's case—sliding it back underneath my car seat.
"Well... being trained by a former BSAA operative does have its perks," I told them.
"More importantly, are you okay, Rebecca?" Moira asked her.
"I got shot in my lower abdomen by one of those soldiers. Don't worry, I just need to clean it and patch it up, then I'll be okay," Rebecca answered, as she gave a reassuring smile.
"Okay, we're not too far from my safe house. You can clean yourself up there when we get there."
***
Shortly later, we arrived at Ada's safe house in an abandoned neighborhood located in the southwestern part of Seattle. The area had been deserted for about four years now. The police removed everyone from the premise—sealing off the whole neighborhood due to the high crime rate within the area and for everyone's safety. Specifically, because of a group of drug dealers that were producing a lot of meth and other highly addictive, toxic chemicals in area. So on and so forth.
Ada parked the red SUV about two blocks from her safe house, in one of the abandoned alley ways of the neighborhood. I carefully helped Rebecca out of the vehicle, while she was focused on applying continuous pressure to her bleeding wound. Before we left, I grabbed my purse and the AK-12 223 out of car, including the ammo for it that I stashed in the pockets of my jacket.
The six of us walked for a little bit down the forsaken area, treading cautiously through the zombie-infected neighborhood. Along the way, we encountered and killed a couple infected that were wandering the area. So, they weren't a major problem for us. Later on, we all arrived at the front door of a brown medium-sized house.
On the outside it looked old and worn down, with a rather large driveway and porch. Ada lead the way to her front door, the rest of us following behind her. Emile held Lilly's hand, keeping a close eye on her the entire way. Making sure that she's okay and safe.
"Here we are," Ada announced, as she unlocked the front door with her house key. She opened it. Holding the door for all as we entered the house, and closing it behind her after she went inside too. My mind was literally blown once I saw what the inside of her house looked like.
I expected to see a fairly decent somewhat messy looking home... instead I see a fucking fancy bungalow that practically looked like a millionaire lived here!!! The walls were all white like pearls. With all sorts of pictures hanging all over the room. The flooring was made entirely out of oak wood. Smooth and slippery to the touch.
The living room had fancy red velvety furniture, with black wooden end tables topped with red China vases with roses that complemented the color scheme of her home. Along with a cute polished coffee table in front of a large flatscreen TV, to the sides of the television were ornate shelfs. Containing all kinds of movies to watch.
Underneath all of it was a huge red and black color coordinated carpet, that held everything in place. The kitchen was no different either. It had a luxurious looking refrigerator, dishwasher, made virtually out of stainless steel. The black wooden counters were topped with smooth marble as the black cabinets hung high above them. Lastly, in the dining room, there was a lovely rounded black well-polished table covered with a red velvet tablecloth. With four matching black chairs.
"Hey Laura, can you help me over to the couch? I'm not feeling too well," Rebecca inquired, as she leaned against the wall for support. I could tell she was light headed, due to the large amount of blood she recently lost.
"Sure," I replied, as I set my rifle and purse down onto the ground. I wrapped Rebecca's left arm over my shoulder.
Tyler came over to help too, wrapping Rebecca's other arm around his shoulder too. We both helped her over to the couch, steadily sitting her down.
"Emile, can you and Moira take Lilly to her room? She needs help with packing some of her things," Ada asked them.
"Mhm. We'll help, let's go Lilly," Emile replied, as she and Moira followed Lilly to her room to pack her essentials.
"I'll go grab my first aid kit out of my bathroom," Ada stated, as she left to grab it.
"Thanks Ada," I thanked her, as she walked passed us.
"Alright let's take a look at your wound Rebecca." She nodded her head.
We helped Rebecca out of her bulletproof vest cautiously to prevent causing her any more pain. She groaned and winced continuously as we took it off her. Once we managed to get it off her, a vibrant red velvet spot could be easily seen on the lower right side of her abdomen through her green shirt. I lifted the bloody side of her shirt slowly to examine the wound.
"It looks like the bleeding has stopped for the most. That's good. Hey Tyler can you get me a small clean washcloth along with a bowl filled with cool water out of the kitchen?"
"Yeah, sure thing," He replied then left to grab them. Ada dropped off a first aid kit with some pain medication, before leaving us again. Tyler came back a few minutes later, holding a medium-sized bowl filled with cool water, sanitizer, and a small washcloth.
"Thanks Tyler," I thanked him, as I took the washcloth and sanitizer from him. While he set the bowl right next to me on the floor.
"Anytime," Tyler replied, as he was opening the first aid kit looking for the supplies I would need in order to take care of Rebecca's wound.
Before proceeding any further, I rolled up the sleeves of my jacket then squirted some sanitizer onto my hands. Rubbing them together until they were all the way dry. I set down the sanitizer onto the floor, as I dipped the small cloth into the cool water. Twisting it over the bowl to squeeze most of the water out if it. I glanced up at her, asked,
"Ready?"
"Yes, let's just get this over with," Rebecca replied, nodding her head.
I folded the wet washcloth neatly, starting dabbing her wound gently to clean it. She winced and bit her bottom lip, as the wet cloth came into contact with her bloody skin.
"Hey Laura, I have a question. Where'd you learn how to do this?" Rebecca asked referring to my medical expertise.
"I took a couple medical training classes that the hospital here in Seattle offered to students like me. And, as stupid as it sounds, I learned most of it from watching too many medical-related TV shows as a kid. I loved watching them since I always would learn something new in the medical field," I explained to her, as I continued to tenderly clean her wound. Feeling a bit embarrassed about it.
"That's not stupid Laura, most people nowadays don't know how to clean a wound properly unlike you and me. If you were to join the BSAA, you honestly would make a great soldier and medic," Rebecca complemented me.
"Thanks Rebecca, now I feel less embarrassed about it," I thanked her, as I finished cleaning her wound.
Now, the next thug I had to do was to check Rebecca's other side. To find out if there's an exit wound. If there is one, that instantly tells me that the bullet isn't lodged into her abdomen.
"Alright Rebecca, now I need to check the back side of your injury to see if there's an exit wound. Okay?" She nodded her head again.
"Hey Tyler, can you help Rebecca over to the ottoman for just a sec?" I asked him.
He nodded his head—coming over to help Rebecca up, as I got behind them. Once she sat down on the piece of small furniture—I made Tyler fetch me a new clean washcloth along with a new bowl of clean cool water. Since the water in the bowl was filthy and tainted with some of Rebecca's dried blood. While he was doing that, I kneeled down behind Rebecca. Lifting part of her shirt to check for an exit wound.
"You're very lucky Rebecca, there's an exit wound here. So, there isn't a bullet imbedded inside you, but there's blood over here I have to clean up too," I informed her.
"That's good to hear," Rebecca sighed in relief. A small smile decorating her lips.
Tyler set the bowl beside me and handed me the new clean wash cloth. I thanked him once again, as he left to go check up on everybody else. While I was busy cleaning her wound, Rebecca asked me,
"Are you and Tyler a thing?"
I immediately felt me cheeks warm up, starting to evidently blush. "Yes we are. Well... as of today. You're not gonna tell Chris or Piers, are you...?" I asked her suspiciously, raising an eye brow at her.
"Don't worry Laura, I won't," She responded, smiling. "But Chris definitely would flip out if he found out about it. Especially Piers, but I think you too look quite cute together though. Besides, today wouldn't be exactly the perfect time to tell them either."
"Thanks," I replied, as I finished cleaning the back side of her wound.
I placed the bloody washcloth into the bowl and looked over at the set up Tyler prepared for me. All of the items were neatly set out on a red towel, ready for me to use. There was a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide on top of a small black towel, bandages, medical tape, medical pads, a suture needle with thread, and a small bottle of 220 mg naproxen sodium tablets. I grabbed the hydrogen peroxide and the small black towel.
"You ready?" I asked Rebecca.
"As ready as I'll ever be," She replied.
