Omniscient
After waiting for nearly two hours, Jelani finally fell asleep. She grabbed her godsons blanket and exited her Mercedes Benz. She seen that he only had his jacket to cover him. She also had a neck pillow for when she went out of town. She decided to give him that also.
Slowly walking over to him, she put the money in his coat picked and zipped it up. She carefully placed his head in the neck pillow and then placed the blanket over him. She rubbed her thumb over his swollen eyes just admiring his face. He started to move causing her to jump back. Once she made sure he was okay, she ran back to her car.
On the positive side, she was able to start a conversation with nearly anyone of any race, color or creed. She would make that person feel enabled and comfortable, at least for a little while. It wasn't long before she would steamroll that person in conversation and that feeling of comfortability would quickly vanish.
She had been extremely afraid of talking to strangers during her youth and her parents made her practice calling random businesses and talking to sales clerks throughout her adolescence. As a result, she became so at ease talking with people that it became her favorite thing to do, even if she was scared of them.
"Hello?" She answered after hearing her phone ring.
"Where the hell is you at? We've been waiting for you for two damn hours!" Sam yelled.
"I stayed here until the man fell asleep."
"What man?"
"The homeless man I was telling you about. Oh my god! Sam I totally forgot that I splashed him with water, now he's probably really cold." She cried.
She was starting to regret her actions. He was laying out there in wet clothes while also being in freezing weather.
"Lauren, please calm down babe." Samantha sighed.
"I can't. That was wrong of me and I already judged him, he probably hates me now. What am I going to do?"
"First, you're going to calm down. Second, make it right because that was wrong of you! I can't believe that you're out here acting like that, you need a man maybe he'll get your ass in check."
Samantha was tired of her nasty attitude. She's been holding out on snapping on her because she knows her story. What she can say is that she's proud of her growth. Two years ago, Lauren wouldn't have been able to even walk past a homeless person let alone talk to one.
"My parents would be so disappointed in me. I'm going to go buy him some clothes."
"You don't even know his size."
"I mean he's really skinny so I'm sure he isn't over a medium."
"It's always the skinny ones." Samantha mumbled.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing. We'll reschedule for another time, do what you gotta do."
"Okay, bye." She sniffed.
She watched Jelani through her window for a moment before pulling off. She went to the nearest Walmart and picked out something that was decent. She didn't know his boxers size so she just picked up a medium and large.
"Why am I even doing this?" She questioned to herself.
"He's going to be your future husband." She heard God's voice say.
"It's no way a homeless man is going to be my husband." She scoffed
"I work in mysterious ways." She heard him again.
She shook her head and proceeded to find snacks for him. She was really concerned with the way she was helping him. The last time she even encountered a homeless person, things took a turn for the worst. He took advantage of her kindness and faked being homeless for money. They started to develop a friendship before someone exposed him on social media.
He had got caught getting into a brand new Honda with Jordan's on his feet. Lauren felt betrayed and made it clear that she would never help another homeless person. That situation caused her to be so hesitant with helping Jelani. By the way he went off on her, she knew that he wasn't faking his situation at all.
"Cassidy, I heard your boo Jelani was out of jail and now he's homeless." She heard some girl gossip from behind her.
"That's not my business."
"But it was your business when he got locked up."
"Oop." Lauren said under her breath.
It wasn't any of her business, but if they were gonna gossip out loud she might as well listen.
"It was either me or him so I had no choice. We don't need to be talking about this in public anyways."
After waiting in line for nearly thirty minutes, Lauren checked out and made her way back to Jelani. She noticed he was up now and trying to eat a piece of candy with a shaky hand.
"Hey!" She yelled, running across the street with the bags.
"I bought you some things." She said, causing him to mug her.
"For what? Why can't you just leave me alone. I don't want or need your sympathy, you were rude as fuck to me. I don't know what your problem is but you need to humble yourself. You're judging me when you can be in the same situation as me. Think about that before you disrespect somebody else again. Oh, you can keep that stuff too."
"Look I'm really sorry for the way I treated you. It's just- never mind. Just please take this stuff, you don't have to accept my apology but I literally splashed you with water. God bless you-" She waited for him to say his name.
"Jelani." He said causing her eyes to widen. She would tell him what she had heard but that wasn't her business.
"I like your name, it's different."
"Thank you-"
"Lauren." She gave a small smile.
"Lauren." He repeated, a smile creeping upon his face. "You have nice dimples."
"Thanks. I should probably get going."
"You should."
