Impatience mixed with worry crept into Dawn's bones as she knocked for the fifth time and no one answered. She heard Violet crying, which was not unusual for a newborn, and the excitement inside her increased by the second to finally meet her niece.
Since she couldn't be there when Sage gave birth as planned due to work restrictions, she finally made it to Charming four days later. Tired from the long drive and bored with the quiet area, she had hoped to finally get something funny to do by relieving Happy and her sister of some work and spending time with her niece.
If only she knew how much she would want the boredom back.
"Sage, I'm getting worried here!", the eldest Trager sister shouted, hoping that not all the neighbors were nosy.
Happy's bike was nowhere, not even in the garage, which was open so Dawn could take a look inside. That meant Sage had to be alone. As much as Dawn hated to do this, she let her bag slide from her shoulder and rummaged around for her keys, which also contained a spare key for the house that Happy and Sage had given her shortly after moving in.
There was a chance that something could still happen so soon after giving birth and as loud as Violet's crying was, Sage should've still heard her knock at some point.
With an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach, Dawn entered the house and set her bag down in the hallway, shoving the keys into the pocket of her jeans as she walked towards the living room.
She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes wide and a hand over her mouth. The dark-haired woman studied the scene in front of her in shock. How her youngest sister lay on the ground, her face covered in blood and some of her hair soaked in the thick liquid.
Fawn's face wasn't recognizable, but Dawn recognized her sister at first glance. After all, she had known Fawn for twenty-six years. Her gaze now wandered to where Sage sat. With her legs bent and her arms resting on them, the redhead motionlessly stared at the wall, her hands covered in, quite possibly, Fawn's blood.
Some of the almost dried, red liquid also stuck to her face and her ginger hair. Sage was in shock, Dawn realized that without having to look at her sister twice and once the initial shock had worn off on her, she rushed towards Sage and crouched down.
"What the hell happened?", she asked carefully, yet with a demanding tone as she pushed some strands of hair out of Sage's pale face. "What have you done, Sage?"
No answer, no look, nothing. Sage continued to just stare at the wall, as if she hadn't even noticed that Dawn had come in.
"Fuck!" The eldest Trager cursed under her breath before sliding across the floor and checking for her youngest sister's pulse. "She's alive...that's a good thing", she murmured to herself.
Not because she was a huge fan of Fawn. Let's be honest, Fawn had never really been a sister to Dawn and Sage. Nevertheless, Dawn was glad that Fawn was still aliveᅳ anything else would have caused huge problems. Especially for Sage and the dark-haired woman wanted to spare her sister that.
Violet's crying stopped for a moment before it started again after a few seconds. Dawn didn't hesitate for long, heaved herself up and took the baby from the bassinet that was just a few meters away and rocked her gently in her arms.
"Hi baby, I'm your auntᅳ the cool one", she whispered soothingly, running her thumb over Violet's cheek. As absurd as the situation was, she was still absolutely delighted with her niece as the baby was actually starting to calm down.
After a while, she finally managed to look away from the baby again before looking around, overwhelmed. She wouldn't get through to Sage at the moment and something had to happen with Fawn. So, Dawn walked over to Sage again and ran a hand through her sister's red hair.
"I'm going to get Happy and take Violet with me, okay? Just stay here and don't do anything..please", the older Trager pleaded with urgency in her tone, but again no response. Sage probably wasn't in a position to do anything anyway.
Sighing, Dawn made her way to the door and tentatively put Violet in the baby carrier that could be used as a car seat at the same time that was standing in the hallway right next to the door, always making sure that she didn't hurt the little one. The dark-haired woman could count on one hand how many times she had held a baby in her arms, and she didn't really have any practice at it. Nevertheless, two minutes later Violet was secured and strapped in and looked like a happy baby.
Without thinking twice, Dawn rushed to her car, secured the baby carrier in the backseat and then got behind the wheel. A little off the trail and still in shock, she slowly ran her hand over her face before turning on the engine and making her way to the clubhouse, hoping to find Happy there.
Since the house was a little further away from the club and she didn't want to drive too fast with Violet in the back, Dawn didn't arrive at the club until twenty-five minutes later. She quickly got the newborn out of the seat and ran inside.
As she looked around she seemed almost manic, but only because she was nervous and worried.
"Is Happy here?", she asked a prospect who was standing behind the bar washing glasses.
"Yeah, but he's in Church right now. Guess you have to wait", the slightly younger one informed her, examining her closely. Since he was relatively new, he didn't know Dawn yet and no one here except Tig had met Violet, so he had no idea that this was the Tacoma Killers' daughter in Dawn's arms.
"Okay, perfect!" Of course, Dawn didn't wait. This was an emergency and everyone would understand the reason behind her interruption.
"Hey! You can't just go in there!" The prospect shouted admonishingly as he rushed to the door in no time. He didn't want to get any shit because of a woman who couldn't listen.
"Shit! I swear I told her she couldn't come in", he rambled nervously to justify himself after Dawn had thrown open one side of the heavy door.
"Dawn, what's wrong?" Tig immediately stood up from his seat and closed the distance to his daughter. "Where's Sage?"
"Why is my daughter with you?" Happy immediately got up and stroded towards Dawn, who immediately handed him his daughter. The tiny redhead started fussing, but immediately calmed down when Happy cradled her close.
"What the hell happened?!", he barked, starting to get nervous.
"Complicated story but you definitely have to come with me", Dawn urged, slightly out of breath. "Sage needs you right now. And someone else needs help too.."
"Just tell me what the hell happened!" Happy snapped, turning around to face Jax after the blonde had appeared between him and Tig and was rubbing his face.
"The other person isn't Fawn by any chance?", he finally asked with a deep sigh.
Tig immediately tensed up, his hands braced against his hips. "What does Fawn have to do with this?"
"You need to help us here a little and fuckin' talk. Better now", Happy said with a low growl.
"I'd like to know too", Dawn let out a scoff as she leaned against the wall and folded her arms. "Because Sage must have had some reason to almost beat our sister to death, right?"
"She did what?!" Happy and Tig asked in unison with horror written on their faces, only Jax didn't seem too surprised.
"Either Mom finally reached Sage, or Fawn herself told her the truth", Jax said dryly, shaking his head. "That's why I wanted y'all at the tableᅳ to enlighten you about what happened this morning."
"What happened? Just fucking spit it out, Jax!" Tig became increasingly nervous as a bad feeling crept over him. "What has Fawn done to cause Sage to lose control like this? We're talking about my sweetest child here, who apparently almost killed her sister. So, what the fuck happened, brother?"
Jax ran a hand over his tired face again, a big lump back in his throat. "It's Fawn's fault that Sage lost our baby back then. For weeks she put strong pills in Sage's food and drugged her while she stayed in Charming."
Shocked whispers could be heard and horrified expressions appeared on everyone's faces. No one had ever been a fan of Fawn. But no one had expected that the youngest Trager sister was so cold and evil.
"Fuck!" Happy cursed under his breath. That didn't sound good at all and as much as he wanted Sage to get revenge, he knew that his Old Lady wouldn't be able to live with the guilt if Fawn actually died by her hand. "I need someone to take Violet!"
"Give her to me, I'll stay here as long as possible. Just call me when I can come back." Dawn pushed herself off the wall and carefully scooped Violet back into her arms, glancing up at the unsettled killer. "Go, Sage needs you. But she's in shock, please be patient with her."
Happy just grunted before rushing out of the room and straight out of the clubhouse, closely followed by Tig and Jax, who also got on their bikes and headed straight to Happy's and Sage's house.
ᚔ
While Tig brushed some hair from his still unconscious daughter's forehead and just looked at her with a mix of disappointment, anger and sadness, Happy crouched down in front of his Old Lady and tentatively leaned a hand against her cheek without making any quick movements.
"Sage, look at me", he ordered in a gentle yet firm tone with a hint of emphasis in his voice. And the almost stern yet loving authority in his tone finally made her look away from the wall.
Her eyes were burning, probably because she had barely blinked once in the last hour. Sage was about to speak, her lips already parted but no sound left her throat. It was as if her voice had been taken away from her.
"I know what happened, little girl. Why all of this happened", Happy spoke up again, rubbing his thumb over her cheek bone. "How about we get you cleaned up first, hm?"
He just didn't want Sage to see herself in the mirror later with all the dried blood on her face, that would probably just send her into shock again. Even though he himself had never experienced this moment of shock after hurting and torturing someone, he knew that other people were much more sensitive. He was the unnormal one here.
"Did Iᅳ did I kill her?" Sage asked in a whisper, tears gathering in her green, grief-filled eyes before her gaze fell on her hands, specifically her bloody knuckles. "Oh my god..IᅳI",
"You didn't kill her, babe", Happy let her know immediately, his own face scrunched up in concern. "She's alive, there's nothing to feel bad about."
The sob that escaped her throat sounded relieved, but she also seemed angry. "But she would fuckin' deserve it! She killed my baby! My son is dead because of herᅳ she doesn't deserve to be happy or free ever again."
"You're right." Jax also crouched down. He had no right to be mad at Sage for beating his Old Lady almost to death. Shit, he could totally understand. "And I would love to put a bullet between her eyes for what she did to youᅳ to us. I hope you know that I would've done everything to prevent this if I had known how unpredictable Fawn was."
"Not the time, man", Happy growled quietly, shooting his brother a warning look. "Why do you think it even came to this, huh?!"
"Look man, I know this all happened because of me", Jax said firmly, remorse reflecting in his eyes. "And I'll always blame myself for that. I just wanted Sage to know that I never would've let it come to this if I'd knownᅳ"
"Everyone knew what a bitch Fawn is, Jax." Sage let out a sad laugh before her lips began to tremble again. "You knew you were playing with fire. And no, I don't blame you for what happened, but don't act like you didn't know what kind of person Fawn is."
The blonde sighed softly. Ultimately he had to realize that he was partly to blame and Sage was generous enough not to hold him responsible. He exchanged a look with Happy, who had every right to look at him with that murderous glint in his almost black eyes.
Jax slowly moved away from the couple again before taking long strides towards Fawn, whose chest was moving more strongly again. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt a woman, and yet he kicked against her ribs twice.
"Time to wake up, darlin'", he hissed before grabbing her upper arm. Sitting her limp body up, he leaned her against the nearest wall. He calmly pulled out his knife and placed the tip of his finger against the tip of the blade. "Tig, get me some cold water."
Tig, still completely off track, stood up without a word and rubbed his chin before searching for a bowl. Filling it with cold water, his glassy gaze was focused on the tiles above the sink.
"Stop dragging dad into this." Sage stood up with Happy's help, letting out a painful groan.
She didn't care how deep the shock sat, she wasn't going to let Jax let her father help her torture Fawn or whatever the blonde was up to. She understood Jax' anger, the desire for bloody revenge, she wanted to see Fawn suffer, tooᅳ but dragging her father into this was just wrong.
"It's okay, sweetheart." With the full bowl of water, the man with black curls walked towards Sage and placed a hand against the back of her head. "Fawn brought this on herself. She killed my grandchild..she deserves everything that's coming."
"So you don't hate me for this?" With uncertainty and eyes filled with tears, she looked up at her father.
The fear that he would hate her had paralyzed her the moment after she realized what she had done. She almost killed Fawn, it would have been understandable if Tig saw her differently now. She was all the more relieved when her father pulled her against his chest, his lips pressing a kiss to her forehead.
"I could never, baby. Not even if you killed her", he admitted in a whisper.
A father should never say something like that, and it broke his heart to say the words out loudᅳ but Fawn had gone too far. To the point where she probably deserved to die. And Tig knew that. But that didn't make all of this less harder for him, Fawn was still his childᅳ his youngest.
He gave Happy an intense, meaningful look. "Get her out of here. She doesn't have to be here for the rest."
"I don't want to leave you alone, dad. Because of me you're here in the first place and have to see this. I'm staying", the redhead protested sternly.
"No, you're not and I want you to fucking listen in that case, Sage", Happy told her firmly. When she tried to protest again, one of Happy's glares was enough to silence her. Finally, he gently pushed her towards the bathroom.
"Shit! Violet!" Halfway there, Sage was about to turn back to check on her daughter. "I totally neglected her!"
"Hey!" Happy gently pulled her towards him and cupped her face in his hands. "Violet is with Dawn, she's safe."
"God, I'm a horrible mom. I didn't even notice she was gone! Or that Dawn was here. Something could have happened to her and I wouldn't have noticed", she cried out before the redhead let her forehead fall against Happy's chest. "I should've thought about her first instead of beating the shit out of my sister."
"That's bullshit, Sage. I never want to hear you say you're a horrible mother again, understand?", Happy said with a low growl as he ran his fingers through her tangled hair. "Anyone would've done the same, little girl. I would've been more surprised if you had stayed calm."
"How could she do that? He was an innocent baby." Sage's sobs literally tore his heart apart as they got louder.
He hated seeing her sad and his instincts kicked in immediately. Normally he would kill anyone who hurt his Old Lady like that, but in that case he had to wait and see what Jax had in mind for Fawn. Death was too good for the bitch, that was a fact.
"I know, babe", he muttered with a deep sigh as he hugged her tighter and just let her cry in his arms. "She'll get what she deserves, I promise."
Sage just nodded with a whimper. With a sniffle, she wiped her tears on Happy's shirt. Unnecessary, as fresh tears immediately streamed down her cheeks again. After a moment, she let Happy lead her the rest of the way to the bathroom and fell back into her previous rigidity, whereupon the SAA simply took over and made sure she was cleaned up.
This day was definitely one she would never forget and no matter what Jax would do to Fawn, Sage hoped that her little sister would sufferᅳ even if she shouldn't feel that way. But before anything would happen to Fawn, Sage had her own plan to inflict even more pain on her sister.
