Chapter twenty four
Elijah was back.
"Elijah! You're back. Did you find any..." I was stopped when I realised that Elijah was both shirtless and covered in tattooed names "...thing?" Both me and Hayley stared at him in confusion and Hayley asked " What is happening?"
"I need you to make a list of these names" Elijah commanded.
While we waited for Marcel, Hayley began examining the names tattooed across Elijah's shoulders, arms, back, and abdomen. She reads aloud "Sabine? Elijah, what is this?" He replied, "I believe they represent the names of the women Celeste inhabited for the past two centuries."
Marcel rejoins us and hands the paper and pen to Hayley
He had a clue about the situation "It's called a Devinette. It's old school. Kind of a riddle. Witches use them to teach their kids. Solve it, and it disappears." why don't I know about this? Why New Orleans witches are only crazy?
"Why? What's the point?" I asked because this ain't time to solve riddles. "Celeste forced me to make a choice between yourself and my siblings, and now she means to mock that choice, taunting me with a childish game. The longer the game, the more they suffer. To find Klaus and Rebekah, we need to solve this riddle. The solution lies somewhere in these names" Elijah stating the importance of the riddle. Marcel had an idea about the name of Elijah. "The name next to Sabine... Annie La Fleur is the witch who was shunned from her coven just over a year ago. Never knew why, but I can find out."
Elijah and Hayley were talking. I snatched the phone from her "Elijah, I'm really sorry that you're going through this. If I had known that Celeste made you choose who to help–" He stopped me. "You were going to die in that fire Scarlett along with my brother's child. There was no choice" He hung up before I could say anything more.
I along with Hayley was researching a witch Celeste possessed in 1919 for the next stage of the plan to rescue the siblings. Later when Marcel and Elijah came back Marcel figured out the location of the siblings by looking at the picture of the witch. But his last sentence was spectical "If I'm right, you need to know exactly what we're walking into. We did something, Rebekah and I... I think the witches are trying to use it against her. It was, uh... something that you're not gonna like." What have they done? Marcel has just informed us that he and Rebekah had summoned Mikael to New Orleans in 1919.
"For the better part of a century, I have wondered how Father found us, what foolish mistake we had made to destroy our time in the one place that we could finally call home. Did you know, I even blamed myself for a time, Marcellus?" Elijah was breaking from the inside.
"Niklaus treated you like a son," I said my eyes full of regret for not being there for Niklaus.
Marcel spoke up "Rebekah. I loved her. I still love her. All we ever wanted was to be together, but as long as Klaus was around, that was never gonna happen. But hey, I guess you wouldn't know anything about that, huh?" I looked at Marcel then Elijah. "When Klaus learns the truth, there will be no end to his rage" I spoke knowing what he could do "I will not let my sister suffer that wrath" Elijah had to save Rebekah. "Then we need to get to them before he learns the truth."
Hayley has vanished I don't know where but Elijah was back. With disabled Niklaus. "Elijah?"
Klaus lies in bed shirtless in his room. His eyes are closed, and he's gasping in pain from Papa Tunde's blade being embedded in his chest. Elijah watches him, clearly conflicted. "What do you need me to do?" I asked not able to see Niklaus in that state.
Elijah removes his jacket and rolls up his sleeve
"The blade is inside him and every second it remains causes Niklaus untold suffering" My eyes widen "Who stabbed him?" not wanting that answer from Elijah, "I did, and now I intend to remove it. You might want to take a step back. Out of all the people that could be here, you're probably the only one he wouldn't immediately slaughter" he uses a scalpel to slice into him along the red scar bisecting his chest, before jamming his fist into the open wound to grab the blade "Also, I know your bond with him. I can see you challenge him to see himself and others in a new light" my head lowered in shame that I let everyone down. Everyone expects so much from me and look what a mess our life is now.
He finally pulls the knife out of Klaus' chest, and he groans. He screamed in agony. "A wonderful skill that I shall be counting on very shortly. You see, Niklaus will be weak as he recovers. So, watch over him and feed him, if you would. But slowly, please, and from your wrist" I flinched.
"It's you he'll take the blood slowly from you and your blood is laced with vervain. So, it will burn him. He'll ingest it slower. Perhaps you could use the time constructively? Persuade him not to murder his baby sister." He turns to Klaus "Niklaus, it was not my desire to bring you pain, but I will not see you hurt Rebekah," he turns back to me "Now, I fear Sabine will be making a final move against us. I intend to find her and to end this."
Klaus whispers weakly "Elijah. You will pay for this."
Klaus, who is famished, drinks from me quickly, and I wince in pain. He was enjoying it so much. "Slow down!" I shouted. He nodded as he stopped. He creased his thumb over the mark of his teeth. "Doesn't the vervain burn? Or the fact you are having blood of you girlfriend who is carrying your baby?" Klaus tightens his grip on my arm "As you may have yet to realize, the line between what brings us pain and what sustains us is far thinner than one imagines.
"Are you talking about my blood or your need to hunt down the people you love most?" I raised my eyebrows at him "I'm too weak for one of your talks right now" his useless answer.
"She's your sister. How can you hate her?"
"Because she has done what no one else has managed to do to me for 1,000 years... Rip my heart out."
Klaus sits up in bed as I run my finger over his chest where the scar was earlier, he buttons up his shirt. "Turns out, they'd already betrayed me, and brought to town the one thing I'd been running from for centuries... my father" I sat beside him on the bed.
He lay back down and grabbed my hand creasing his thumb over my palm.
"So, you're consumed by revenge you'll never achieve. Elijah implied Rebekah and Marcel could be anywhere in the world by now" I tilted my head my eyes fixed on him. "Oh, I'm not so sure about that. They'll need a cloaking spell, and for that, they'll need a witch" I wasn't sure where he was going with the words. "There's only one place they can go..." I knew the end of the sentence, "Home."
Later Niklaus sits up and attempts to get out of bed, but he is too weak. He nearly fell, but I caught him. "Go back to bed you are still weak" "I'm still hungry. There's a fresh blood supply in the kitchen" I scoffed at his stubbornness "You won't make it that far. So, be a good little boy and get back into bed" he looked right into my eyes "If I had a quid for every time a woman has tried that line on me" I took a deep breather " Yeah then you'd have, like, no money" he smirks "I beg to differ. Some women find me quite charming. Including you my love," I smiled at him. He continued to tell me the story of the past.
"Why am I not surprised you like opera?"
"I always had a particular soft spot for Le Huguenots. I like the story" he gets out of bed "It was a tale of forbidden love, a Romeo and Juliet of sorts. On the day they are to marry, family and long-festering hatred intervene. Thousands are massacred. A father even kills his child in the final act. I can almost appreciate the irony."
I came into the living room to find Niklaus pouring himself a drink from the bar. "You want to self-medicate your self-pity, fine. Better scotch than my blood, no matter what Elijah says" The colour of his face changes in mention of Elijah "Don't speak to me of Elijah."
"He loves you" stating the truth of their brotherhood. "Yes. He does, and he proves it time and again, even when my father enlisted him to kill me."
I feel sorry for the whole family. Fathers are supposed to glue the family together and here the deepest bond of love is getting broken because of an evil father. The three loved each other a lot and look at them one is trying to kill the other.
"Elijah has always carried guilt for that night for not stopping our father. I told him not to blame himself. When your father wants to kill you, he wants to kill you. Nothing you can do about it" Klaus' cell phone vibrates, and he checks it "Oh, I hate to be a know-it-all. My sister and her lover have been spotted in town. So, story time endeth here, I'm afraid"
"Niklaus no it's Rebekah"
He walks over to a statue on the table and knocks it over ignoring me. The statue breaks on the floor, revealing the indestructible white oak stake inside
"Not a chance Nik"
A white oak stake.
Before I could interject, Klaus vamp-speeds out of the compound. "Niklaus!" I screamed. Wish I had my powers at their full strength.
I walk out of the compound and into the street to find Niklaus feeding on a random man he stumbled upon. When Klaus noticed my presence, he stopped feeding and sent the man away
"What are you doing?" totally annoyed by him. "Well, if you have to ask, you obviously haven't been paying attention. I'm going to kill my sister, but first, I needed some sustenance with a little less vervain in it. No offence."
"People see me as a redemption road of yours Nik. We both are anchor of each other keeping each other sane. As a person who has lost a sibling, who has felt that pain, you won't survive if you're the one who kills her. Rebekah is the person who loves you the most and you love her the most too. I know it. Don't let every one prove us wrong Nik. Just don't"
"I'll tell you what I almost didn't survive, love-- My sister bringing the most vile creature ever to have walked the earth down upon me."
"Yes, your father. But, by hunting Rebekah and Marcel down to the ends of the earth, by terrorizing them the way you were terrorized, you'll be no different than him. Don't become your father."
"I've been called every shade of monster, but that's new. My father? Mikael was the monster monsters were afraid of. Come. Let me show you."
He grabs hold of me and vamp-speeds me away. Klaus has brought me to the old opera house to see the ruins left from Mikael's visit in 1919.
"You know the city's history. That night in 1919, when the opera house burned down on this very spot? That was my father at his worst." I was horrified.
"What a show it was!" I could see in his eye. The pain. The regret. The void that Mikael created.
"The curtain goes up to reveal Marcel staked in the hands of a wooden cross. He is barely conscious. Lana is dead and is propped up on a swing, her mouth taped shut, and a stake impaled through her chest. The audience laughs and applauds, Mikael compelled the audience to watch it all, applaud as if it were the drollest of comedies, and then to leave celebrating a terrific night at the opera. I tried to save Marcel. My father had other ideas. Rebekah attempted to intervene. The crowd applauds as Mikael pushes Rebekah to the ground and stakes her with a normal stake through the stomach. All these years, I actually believed she was trying to save me."
He looked at me right in my eyes. Feeding the story right into my soul. "And so I ran, beaten like the dog my father believed me to be And as we fled for our lives, he burnt it all to the ground And with it, we assumed, Marcel."
"Niklaus I understand but--"
"I lived, but all that we had built died, as did the last shred of me that felt human. That is what my father took from me that night. I assure you, Scarlett, I will not terrorize my sister and her lover for centuries. Nor will I humiliate and torment or dehumanize them. No, none of that. I will simply and quickly end them."
He lets go of me and vamp-speeds away before I can catch him
"Klaus, wait!" I screamed.
