Chapter twenty eight

Klaus woke up gasping waking me up along with him "You alright?" he slowly nodded gasping for a few moments he lay back down as we both fell asleep.

"Hey! Earth to you!" Cami's voice broke me and Klaus out of the trance. My head rested on Nik's shoulder as he danced the glass in his hand. I looked at Cami she had a wound on her face "Your face--" she shrugs it off "--Will heal. Listen, I wanted to thank you" Nik was dull just like his reply "Unless you've come equipped with the means to fill this, no additional platitudes are necessary" Cami was taken back "Okay... I'm in a crap mood because my uncle just died, and people are partying like it's Mardi Gras. What's your excuse?" She notices Klaus scowling "Klaus, seriously, what's going on?" His Father. "I've been having these dreams about my dead father. No diagnosis is necessary, love. I've already got this one covered: my fears of fatherhood, of scarring my child as my father scarred me, are manifesting as nightmares" He smiles fakely and takes a long drink "It's horrifically cliché." I rolled my eyes at him. Fatherhood is good for him.

"Truthfully? I'm just surprised to hear you acknowledge out loud that you're going to be a dad" Cami said as I sat up "So true. First time I heard him say it!" She smiles at me.

Marcel enters the bar, which both of us notice as we listen to Cami speak.

"I know more about the trials of fatherhood than you might imagine, Camille" Nik said indicating his former fatherhood towards Marcel. "And it worked out for you the first time, why change a thing?"

Cami leaves the table. Once she's gone, Klaus catches Marcel's eye across the restaurant.

We both continue to sulk and Nik continues to drink at our table as he glances at Marcel. Marcel sees the photos of Father Kieran, Sean, and Cami by the bar, and grabs a bottle of scotch to make a toast to the entire party

"I know I haven't been around these parts lately. It's a testament to Father Kieran that we could come together and share a drink, and a story or two. Kieran rolled into town on a rusty old cruiser after his daddy died twenty-five years ago. And damn it, that guy could party!" He and the audience laugh "That was, of course, before he took his vows. But, even then, he was committed to the Quarter. He knew that this town needed him. And, we still do" He raises his glass "To Father K!" The crowd murmurs after him "To Father K."

"Seems rather uncivilized to laugh and dance around the body of a loved one" Niklaus spoke up as Elijah poured himself a drink "Yes, far better to practice your process of grief, Niklaus-- denial, rage, and hoarding coffins in basements" I tried to hold my laughter back as Hayley came up and sat beside me. "I will warn you, Hayley, Niklaus is in a spectacularly foul mood today" I warned her before. "Sod off."

"What's the deal with these moonlight rings? Oliver's trying to set a revolution every five seconds. People are scared, angry, and frankly, I'm tired of stalling" The fight for justice on wolf speech was once again started. "It's a day of peace, Hayley. Try and enjoy it. And, in the meantime, with all manner of unknown enemies conspiring against our family, you'll move back in with us" Klaus was in a foul mood yet Hayley tried to be sarcastic "Awesome! Then, we can do that thing where you lock me in the tower, I escape, there's drama, and then you two both realize I'm very capable of looking after myself" He was triggered. The problem with frustrated Klaus is that he can burst any minute.

"The rings are in progress. I will live up to my word. We will find and punish whoever launched the attack on the Bayou, and you will return to the compound for your safety!" Hayley sighed and rolled her eyes "But, right now I'm gonna finish this bottle and the next, in the hopes of drowning the demon who has chosen today to haunt me" He looked up at the ceiling before chugging right from the bottle "Cheers, Mikael. Impeccable, Freudian timing." Elijah was stunned by Niklaus' words "Elaborate."

Me and Hayley both look at Elijah and Klaus in concern

Elijah asked "Have you dreamt of our father?" which Niklaus thought was to be ashamed of "Go ahead, have a good laugh" but what was more interesting was Elijah's words "I can assure you there is no piece of this that I find even remotely amusing, Niklaus. Especially considering I've been dreaming of him, too" "What?" Klaus exclaimed. Elijah brainstorms "If you are also seeing him" He stops mid-thought when he notices Genevieve enter Rousseau's. She catches his eye, and smiles "Perhaps our elusive, unknown enemy is orchestrating a further attack?" Klaus stares at Genevieve "Well, then. What better way to punctuate a day of peace than by killing someone?" He and Elijah continue to look at Genevieve as he smiles and waves at her.

the funeral procession is walking down the street to the sounds of jazz music being played, behind the priests acting as pallbearers for Father Kieran. Near the end of the parade is Klaus, Elijah, Hayley and along with me, the latter of whom is flushed, and keeps having coughing fits. "You alright? You look-" "-A hundred months pregnant and pissed off at the world?" Elijah's words triggered me. Niklaus wrapped his around my neck with a sly smirk. "Do you think I was the target of those bombings?" Hayley was beside me when she spoke up and our attention was towards her. "Of course, you were the target! Were I to wage a war on the wolves, you'd be my first kill!" Hayley glares at Niklaus "I would string you up, for all your worshipers to see" Elijah tries to balance the murderess approach of Niklaus with simplicity "I believe that was my brother's way of telling you he'd like you to return home with us" he turned to Klaus "Perhaps try a different approach, Niklaus, with fewer references to murder?"

Niklaus did not stop "As much as I would hate to throw you over my shoulder, and drag you kicking and screaming to the compound, we both know I will--" He smiles and looks at me "-- for the sake of my child"

"One bad dream, and suddenly, you want to be a responsible daddy!" Hayley chipped in. Klaus pulls me closer, "Let me put this into perspective: my father lived to torment me. It is not my intention to become him. This cycle of misery ends with my child" I yank his arm away from me with a fake smile "You forgot one thing in your little attempt to plead your case-- she's not your child. She's ours. and still, I'll accompany Wolfie everywhere because you bore me."

Me and Hayley walk away from the brothers and start walking down the sidewalk, Hayley sees Cami walking near the front of the procession and runs to catch up with her. "Cami" Cami's attention went to us. "Hayley. Scarlett. Hi."

Hi, I know you don't know me, but I just wanted to say that--" I coughed and cleared my throat as Hayley continued for me "I'm sorry about your uncle. He was really... good to people like me during the storm, and I appreciated that" "Thank you" Cami acknowledged our approach but she realised why Hayley was here "You want something, do you?" Hayley smiles awkwardly "I'm sorry about the timing... I was just wondering, if before he died, he said anything weird about Francesca Correa. I think that she may have been involved in an attack in the Bayou. If you hear anything--" Cami cuts Hayley off "Look, Hayley? I'm trying-- mostly failing-- to stay out of all this stuff, but... she's a real bitch. So, yeah, if I hear anything, I'll let you know" Hayley tried to wind up everything "Thanks. And again, sorry about your uncle."

As I walked away, I started to cough and felt a bit woozy. I lean against a light post as I begin to cough up blood. Horrified, I continue to cough. Genevieve and Hayley, who have just noticed my condition, shout for Klaus to come help her. Klaus and Elijah rushed to help me, but I collapsed as everything went dark.

I woke up on the table, but the room was empty, except for one other person. He walks toward me, and I automatically backs away from him. "Who are you?" he smirks "I suppose I'm family."

I was scared, I backed away from Mikael as he approached her "I assume my reputation precedes me" "This is a nightmare. I'm dreaming" I tried to tell myself. "On the contrary, my darling-- this is very real" He vamp-speeds over to me and puts me in a headlock, and I gasp in fright. "Welcome to my hell-- stuck in an eternity of watching over that hideous creature my children call brother!"I was terrified "You're dead! How can I be here?" when I realized where I was "Oh my god! NO!" I thrash around in his grip "Noo! The baby!""The baby?" I screamed again "That kid never had a chance! And as if your bloodline isn't filth enough, you poison it by merging it with Klaus'?" He laughs manically "The deathless vermin, fancying himself a daddy?"

My eyes turned black, and veins formed on my face as I shrieked pushing myself out of his grip and broke his arm by twisting it behind his back. I picked up a coat rack and swung it at his head with all the force I could muster.

"She's not dead! I'm not dead! If I was dead, you wouldn't be trying to kill me! You're dead, Mikael. Your son already beat you!" I shouted Mikeal bellows "He is not my son! He's a scourge, a walking symbol of weakness!"I kicked at the fence to the staircase to break off a piece of wood to use as a stake, and made my way up the stairs as Mikael continued to stalk me menacingly "There is no saving that atrocity festering in your womb. Klaus will destroy it, one way or another. Better he dies now, and you along with it!"Mikael jumps up onto the second-floor balcony, startling me.

I jumped down onto the first floor, and Mikael jumped down to follow me. I spun around rapidly and rushed behind him, stabbing him in the heart with the stake from behind, His screams filled the room. "My daughter has an advantage Niklaus never had-- she will never know you."

I woke up with a loud gasp on the table, Klaus' blood still covering my mouth and neck. Elijah helps me sit up, and Klaus rubs my shoulder affectionately. "You're alright, love. You're alright."

"I saw him. He tried to kill me. I saw Mikael."

I was sitting on my bed, thinking, when Klaus approached my room. I noticed him, but he still stopped and knocked before he fully entered. "You've proved quite resilient, Letty. Fighters, both of you."

"I guess we've had to be. Especially lately." I look at Klaus, but he is speechless."I've decided that I'm not going anywhere from now on" I could see Nik soften "Well, I'm relieved to hear it" My tone changed as I spoke up "But no mouth-breathing bodyguards, no telling me what to do" he smiles at me "All I ask is that the child is kept safe."After a moment of silence, Niklaus broke it "Come with me, hmm?" He heads out the door but stops when he sees I wasn't following him "Please. I want to show you something."

I reluctantly get up and follow Klaus out the door. He takes me to another room in the compound, which he has already set up to be a nursery, complete with a crib, a bassinet, and a gorgeous mobile hanging from the ceiling, among other things. I stare in surprise as I take everything in. "Believe it or not, Scarlett, I would like you to be here. Our daughter should be raised by her parents, in her family home" I touched the crystals hanging from the mobile and smiled at him affectionately "I wish I had a room like this when I was a baby, she is lucky to have you as her father" Niklaus chuckles and pauses for a moment "Uh, you said you saw my father?"

"Why do you call him that? He's not your real dad" I walked near him wrapping my hands around his neck. "He's done damage only a father could do"He looks at me "What did he say to you?" I smile at him warmly "Nothing true."

Klaus considers this for a moment and then genuinely smiles before kissing me. I looked at the wall, on which he had hung the painting he made of New Orleans. It includes a cityscape at night with a large full moon painted in the sky above the buildings. "Nice one. It is radiating peace which is something we all are missing" he smiled. "I was scared you know seeing like that I thought I was going to lose you love" I looked right into his eyes "You ain't getting rid of me this easily Nik" he chuckled and he buried his head in my neck.
