Chapter twenty
Klaus and Marcel are in the living room discussing their current predicament. The little witch flew away. I hope she didn't take my information from yesterday too personally.
In the courtyard, Hayley and Rebekah are rifling through several old clothes chests while searching for a Casket Girls Festival outfit. "Still celebrating Casket Girl R," she ignored me and continued her search. " So the witch is missing, huh?" Hayley asked. "Walked right out of the front door. Know anything about it?" I scratched my head "No, although I did tell her that the witch Elders were dead." Hayley questioned, "Well, why would she care when the witches tried to kill her in their ritual?"
"I think it was more that Marcel didn't tell her that the one thing preventing her from being free had been eliminated" I stated "So you are the reason she's run off" I sighed processing my own words "I was just telling her the truth. She's the one who realized they were just using her to keep their control over the witches" Rebekah replied with true words "Yeah well, I've never been a fan of the boys club. Just wait, Elijah will join them and the three of them will be impossible."
We turned and saw Marcel and Klaus on the balcony they mutter quietly to each other.
"Used by the witches, lied to by Marcel, manipulated by Elijah, threatened by Klaus. Just like a modern-day Casket Girl" Rebekah expressed. " Are you talking about Davina or yourself?" I rolled my eyes at her as Bexs answered Hayley's question. "Does it matter? Either way, us girls have got to stick together."
Hayley and I are walking through the courtyard with two of Klaus' vampire guards behind us. She turns back to them, looking annoyed
"I know Klaus told you to follow me, but does that mean you have to follow me to the bathroom?" I chuckled at her words.
The two guards cross their arms over their chests as Hayley's phone rings. She lifts her phone and sees that Sophie is calling her
"Give us two minutes. It's her gynaecologist"
We head into the garage and shut the door before answering her phone
"What the hell do you want?"
From the other line, Sophie places her request. To find Celest. I remember that witch. She was very close to Elijah. Sophie asks Hayley to snoop into Elijah's things and find where she is buried and in return, she will undo the curse of Hayley's wolf family.
Hayley hangs up and sighs again, looking conflicted. "So?" she asked the dumb question. "You are asking me. No. Big NO" and I stormed out of the garage.
Hayley and I sat inside the house while downstairs in the courtyard havoc happened. I can feel heavy magic present throughout the compound and yet I can't do anything.
In the compound's bar room, I walk in to find Elijah still poring over Davina's sketches. Hayley was behind me. He starts sorting the various sketches out and arranging them in a pattern on the coffee table. "You OK?" he just nods. "What's with this artwork?"
"Davina's sketches. I wonder if they represent some premonition. They seem to suggest something is coming. Something sinister"
Elijah finally finishes arranging the sketches, revealing that they are one big sketch of a very familiar-looking woman's face. It's Celeste, Elijah's former lover. We all recognized her. "Oh, my god. Isn't that..." Hayley runs out of the room like she did something wrong.
We all are discussing their current predicament while Elijah looks through an old book about witches throughout the ages. "The Italians call them strega. The Yoruba of West Africa call them aje, meaning mother. Where my mother was from, they called them häxa, and here we call them witch. Over the centuries, vampires have fought them and fought beside them, bedded them and burned them. Whether adversary or ally, they have been a force to be reckoned with. Their ancestral magic anchors this city. There's never been one all-powerful witch until Davina."
Klaus proudly spoke "Who is now tucked in safe and sound down the hall under my protection. Your Celeste was quite beautiful and a portent of evil, according to our volatile artist in residence" I then asked "Yes. Perhaps Davina's mistaken in what she calls evil for power. Celeste was certainly very powerful in her day, but she's been dead for over two hundred years. I don't understand. Why all these sketches now?"
Downstairs in the living room, Klaus and Elijah make themselves drinks at the bar while they listen to Davina and Marcel fight.
"Yeah listen how they fight over trust!" Taunt slipped off my tongue as they stared at me. I shrugged and sat on the sofa.
"Well, that's going well," Nik said while indicating the fight. "If you were trying to win the girl's trust, perhaps poisoning her one true love was not the most splendid idea" Elijah's sassy reply made me laugh silently.
"Oh. Are there any more inopportune deaths you'd like to wave in my face?"
Elijah with sarcasm dripping off his tongue "Give me a month. I'll get you a list" Klaus all bored "Young, old, dead, or alive, witches are a pain in the ass" I turned around "Hey! I'm a witch too" he winked at me. "You are my witch" My mouth stretched as much as it could into a smile.
Klaus, who had heard the commotion in Davina's room, went to investigate and I in concern for the little witch followed him.
"What's with all the racket?" We stopped in our tracks when we saw Davina throwing up soil. "Bloody Hell" I shouted.
Suddenly, the house begins to shake violently, as though it's an earthquake. We heard Rebekah asking what was going on. walks out to join them, looking grim. He said a word that explained everything. Everyone understood it. "Davina."
