niola groans, turning off her phone and shoving it into her back pocket and continuing to walk through the hall. she's been getting non-stop messages from random people. everyone is asking about her and matt's relationship and zade's broken nose.

everyone says that they're just curious or that they want to make sure the rumors are real before they believe them. but teh truth is that they already believe them – why else would they bother to message her? and honestly, nobody care if they're true or not. they just want more drama to add to the rumors.

if niola answered them enthusiastically, there would be a rumor saying that she's super happy. some people would say that she's happy because she's dating matthew – others would say she's happy because zade was beat up.

if niola answered rudely, there would be rumors saying that she's sad and mean. some people would say that she's upset because zade was hurt and maybe there was something happening between them – others would say that she's upset because the truth got out about her and matthew dating.

so it doesn't matter what she does. she's just the main character in some highschool drama that would eventually fade away within a week or two.

"hey, niola." a random blonde girl says to her as niola walks down the hall. "is it true that you and matt are dating?"

niola shoves past her, continuing to walk toward her destination – which is matthew's locker. the school day hasn't started yet. there's still ten more minutes before the bell rings to go to first period. niola has to get to matt before then, to explain to him what's going on. but the amount of people who have stopped her in the halls have made this task extremely difficult.

there's not a doubt in her mind that matt is going through the same thing. there's probably people annoying him right now. and even worse, he's probably super confused about everything. honestly, he might even be angry at niola for starting such a huge mess of drama and rumors.

"oh, niola, are you heading to matt's locker?" a random boy asks her, noticing her walk into the hall where his locker is. she ignores him and keeps walking. but he trails behind her. "i knew it! you guys are dating! just wait until i tell my friends about this. they're gonna-"

"can you just stop!?" she shouts, catching the attention of those around them. people begin to whisper as she glares at the boy. she ignore their staring. she's so sick of people watching her every move and documenting every single word that passes through her lips. "just leave! can i not walk around without people following me around!?"

"what's going on?" everyone's eyes drift to a new person joining into the action. standing right behind niola is matthew, glaring down at the boy who caused her to freak out like this. the whispering intensifies as they see how protective matt is.

niola doesn't bother to look back at matt. she's still fuming from what the boy had said. once he sees matt towering over niola, he quickly scurries away.

finally, she turns to face matt. he's wearing a green dinosaur sweater with baggy jeans. "can i talk to you?" they ask at the same time. suddenly, niola notices that everyone is still watching them. she rolls her eyes and grabs him by the hand, pulling him into an empty classroom a few feet away.

the lights are turned off, the room being lit up by the sunlight shining through the windows. matt walks over to the windows, peering out through the glass. niola follows behind him. he sits down on the surface of the desk behind him and looks up at her.

"i'm sure i know what you're going to ask." niola says. "it's about the rumors, isn't it? the rumors about us dating?"

"well, yeah." matt admits to her. "i'm a tad bit curious about why i've been getting tons of messages asking if you and i are together. not to mention how many people have stoped and asked me in the halls."

"let me explain." niola says quickly. "do you remember how i was late getting to your car after school?"

"yeah, we were all waiting on you for about ten minutes."

"that was because i ran into zade." niola explains. "he started touching me inappropriately. i punched him – which caused the broken nose rumor – then he said that he thought it was okay to act like a fucking weirdo because i'm single. so i said the first thing that came to my mind and i told him that i had a boyfriend. one thing led to another, and that fake boyfriend ended up being you."

matt listens to her speak carefully, taking time to understand what she's saying. "so i'm your way out of being stalked by zade?"

niola nods, "please don't be mad."

"oh, i'm not mad." matt reassures her with a small smile. "well, not at you at least. but you can bet your ass that i'm pissed at zade for putting you in a situation like that."

"still, i'm sorry for dragging you into my mess." niola apologizes, looking down at her shoes. she doesn't understand why matt isn't angry at her. she got him tangled into a loop of lies and now the whole school thinks that they're dating.

matt stands from the desk and places a hand under her chin. he tips her head up to look at him before he says, "i'm perfectly fine with being your fake boyfriend for as long as you need to feel comfortable."
