Nnenna's POV

Taking heed to Adunni's advise, I told my mother about the girl who needed a roommate. Mother was skeptical at first but seeing as her search was not yielding any fruit, she gave in to my request.
I called the number the next morning, and she told us that we were free to come check out the room, any day.

We decided to go today, being Saturday.
The hostel was located few kilometers away from the school, and very easy to locate. I calculated the distance in my head. Since it took us five minutes to get to the hostel from the time we boarded another taxi at the school junction, going on foot would have taken us about fifteen minutes—plus or minus. As soon as I came to realization with that fact, I liked the hostel more, because of the proximity.

Mom was more interested in the sleeping arrangements. The girl (Helen was her name) already has a sleeping foam, a reading table and chair, with a long mirror on the wall. I was praying really hard that mom does not find any big error with this room, because I wanted to start staying in a hostel as soon as possible, plus, I had developed a liking to this room.

“I saw a GP tank outside, so you students can fetch water within the compound, right?” My mother asked.
To think that I was too nervous to meet a potential roommate that I did not notice the GP tank mother spoke about.

“Yes, we fetch water inside the compound, we don't go out to get water because we have steady electricity. You don't have to worry, even the toilet and shower is still in good condition.” Helen said.

Mother nodded in acceptance.

“We have your number, we'll get in touch with you,” she said.

My heart sank hearing those words. My mom was not the predictable kind of person. She might sound like she has accepted the room, only to change her mind at the last minute.  I wanted her to ask the girl for her account number, that will solidify my space here.

“Okay, ma. No problem,” Helen sounded disappointed too but there was nothing she could do than wait.

I picked up my yellow satchel, and headed out the door after mom.
Helen waved us goodbye as we were going out. She had a forlorn expression on her face.
.
.
“Do you like the place?” mom said to me when we were in a bus headed home.

“Yes, Ma. It's very comfortable considering that the major needs of the students are met.” I replied.

“You're right. Call her when we get home, to send her account number, I'll make the transfer so you can move in tomorrow.”

“Okay. Thank you so much, Mummy.”

“What you should do is pay attention to your studies, never lose focus of why you are here. Let your studies be your most priority throughout your stay here because it's easy to get distracted in this kind of world. Be mindful of the people you move about with as they have a lot of influence on you too. Lastly, never forget to be prayerful, it works.” she admonished.

I nodded, suddenly determined to make the best of the time I have got in Unilag.

As soon as we arrived home, I went straight to my room and began packing the essential things required during my stay in the hostel.
Mom did not buy a lot, thankfully, she did not buy the sleeping foam she talked about last week. Seeing as Helen had one, I would simply have to share with her in the meantime.

I packed all my decent clothes and nighties in two luggage, a couple of slippers, a brown leather sandal and black Nike shoes were contained in my large backpack together with the toiletries. I put my reading lamp, my notebooks, and few novels into the bag as well. My possessions were sizeable so I did not have to pack a lot.

Mother and I went to the market later. She got me provisions and took me to a saloon to make my hair. It was very late when we came home.
Mama Toke was kind enough to take care of Steph and Tochi while mom and I were away. In appreciation, mom bought biscuits for her son, Toke.
.
.

“Nnenna!” Helen called.

“Yes, I'm coming” I replied, drying two of my hands on the flared skirt I was putting on.
When I came into the room, she started giving me few information I should have about our hostel.

She told me about the rules and regulations guiding the hostel; the time for locking the gate at night and unlocking it in the mornings. That it was an offence for any student to cook outside his or her space, in order to avoid spreading smoke and staining other students' clothes with charcoal. She said other things and told me she would continue when she returned from night class.

I used to think that night class was only held for newly admitted students in their first year until she told me that any level could attend night classes, depending on the students that fixed them.
I was yet to begin attending the classes. Adunni told me she would not be going until the week before revisions; as that was when the lectures would be intense.

Helen also told me that I was free to finish the jollof rice she had prepared earlier because she would not be eating the food again. She instructed that I lock the door after her, be vigilant and careful on who I let into the room.
Nodding to all her instructions, I bade her goodbye but did not fail to notice how revealing her clothes were.

The red tank top had a V-neck that showed the dip in-between her small breasts, her nipples were also obvious and strained against the light material.

I shrugged off.
Whatever she did with her life was not my business anyway. I knew what I was here for, if she did not have an idea about herself, that was her problem to solve.

I could not remember how long since I nodded off. I was engrossed in my biology notes trying to comprehend what the lecturer taught in the last class, when I must have fallen asleep. Only to awake to the sound of the knocks on the door.

I stayed quiet for two seconds to ascertain that the knock came from outside my door.

“Nne, open the door. It's Helen,” Helen said in a hushed tone.

I glanced at the clock, after ten O'Clock. I wondered if night classes took that long. Again, it was not my business.

She quickly rushed to the bathroom after tossing her bag on the reading table. Soon after, I heard the shower running but I was too worn out to keep my eyes open.
.
.
The next morning, I spoke to Adunni about the night classes.

“Okay, let's go next Monday” she replied.

“No wahala. But, when do the classes end?” I asked.

“It should be by 9 pm, it won't be so late because students have to go back to wherever destination they came from. And why would they be learning past two hours, which kan brain dey get?” she remarked.

“Okay,” I refrained from telling her the time Helen came in because I did not want to seem like a snitch.

As we were heading towards the science laboratory block, we stopped to buy biscuits and Coca-Cola drink that we would eat before the practical started.

“Ehen! Have you seen the physics results of the second year students?” Adunni asked.

“No, why?”

“I saw it. My sister, we have to take that course seriously, the number of fs I saw” she related.

“Wow?”

She shrugged, “Wow no be here,”

“We'll just do our best and pray for the rest. Grace shall see us through” I had no idea I could prophesy even when I just did.

“Amen oo!” she concurred.

We increased our pace when we saw that there were already a large number of students gathered at the hall. Today's practical was going to be another battle for survival. Life in the University was not as sweet as they make the stories seem.

In the long run, I had a not-so-terrible time in the hostel. Helen was not so bad to live with even though she had flaws which got on my nerves a lot. She was a wonderful roommate who let me have her hand-me-downs, her share of food, and gave me money whenever I needed. Asides all that, her regular night classes and clubbing on weekends were occurring more than I could keep up with.
I was getting tired of staying awake or pretending to be in order to open the door when she got back. Her attendance to church also became less frequent, but her stay with her so-called boyfriend was like every weekend something.

Her lifestyle was becoming unfamiliar as the days passed and I did nothing but steer clear of her way.

The semester was soon coming to an end, with the exams heralding next two weeks, Adunni and I made it our duty to study vast and further in order to cover our scheme of work before the exams. I could hardly wait to write these exams and be free with this semester so I can go back home and spend the holidays with my family.
