NNENNA'S POV
‘♪ Glorious God! Beautiful King!! Excellent God! I bow before your throne ♩’
That was the song the girl that was leading the congregation in worship, started singing.
Everybody in the hall immediately chorused in.
Today being Wednesday, was mapped out by the Student Governmental bodies, as the social activities day. Every Wednesday for that matter. As soon as it was twelve pm, lectures are expected to end to enable students go for their personal and social activities in school.
I was studying alone in the lecture block, when three girls walked up to me. One of them introduced herself as Oluchi, and she spoke on behalf of the others as well. She was really easy-going and spoke in a soft tone. She asked if I was going for any midweek service and I said no. She politely encouraged me to attend to the one being hosted by her church; RCF inside the school.
That was how I found myself in the midst of other students—singing and dancing to the music.
Being the introvert type of person, I did not socialize with people so much in as much as most of them made efforts to talk to me. I simply smiled and went about my business.
At a point, I began to feel hungry and started to regret why I agreed to come in the first place.
Just the thought of my mother's special jollof pasta with lots of meat, had my stomach rumbling in delight.
The praise and worship session finally came to an end. A male speaker mounted the stage. He was tall, muscular built with broad shoulders.
‘Hallelulah!’ he spoke loudly into the microphone.
‘Amen!!’ the congregation chorused.
“Say to your neighbour, ‘Neighbour...in his presence, you shall not see shame.” he instructed to the congregation.
Everyone did as told, and he continued.
He spoke on being used by the Creator. He admonished us to make ourselves wholly available for service, to our Eternal Father in Heaven, and that in turn the Father will treat all the issues of our lives and give us testimonies. He cited instances in his own life and of lives of few other people.
His message really inspired me. I was not a staunch christian, but I went to church, and I believe that there is a Creator who oversees the affairs of everyone, blesses us according to our deeds and shall judge every man at the end. I was simply being a moral human being, who had some religious ethics preserved. I resolved to let the Righteous Father use me for good and to the Glory of His name, in return, I would have no issues with my results.
He led us in prayers and gave us some Bible points for study. At the end of the session, information was passed out. A member of the choir was celebrating his birthday today, so we were told to wait behind to partake in the celebration and also take a share of cake. I waited.
As the cake was being passed round, they also placed a sheet of paper before the members—to write down their phone numbers, especially for the first-timers.
I quickly started making my way back home. Close to Hotspot place, I crossed paths with Adunni.
“What are you still doing in school by now, this girl you've joined bad gang.” she joked.
“I went for midweek service.” I answered.
“Ohh! Which church?”
“RCF,”
“What does RCF mean? My friend...just give the full name joor,”
“Restore Christians Faith,” I replied.
“Okay, that's what you should have said naa. Which denomination?” she probed further.
“I don't know! Come, leave me alone.” I told her.
My patience was wearing thin, not to talk of the hunger that was playing ball inside my stomach.
She seemed to have read my mood because she did not make any other remark about the church.
Adunni was a Catholic, although not a very strong believer in the Christian faith. She simply took life as it was and carried on her daily activities.
She started talking about the Fresher's night party that was going to take in place in her hostel on Friday night. She showed me some pictures of the clothes she was contemplating on wearing to the event, and asked how it would go well with the outfit her boyfriend had picked.
“It's okay shaa,” I said, since I was not very good in this area. I was still puzzled by her last statement.
This was just our first year in school, I felt this started too early for her to be into such relationship. I could hardly even think about myself doing something that may eventually be detrimental to my academic pursuit, secondary school taught me enough lessons on that.
“Mtchew! What do you mean by it's okay, you don't even have fashion-sense. Haha!” she said.
I smiled at her words, knowing fully not to take her words seriously.
“Ehm, have you found a hostel now?” She questioned.
“Nooo, my mom and I are still looking out for a good place.”
“Well, at this rate you may not find the perfect one. Just be open minded to whatever you may see, then gradually you'll get the one you want. Hostel no dey finish as far as University is concerned, just fix yourself in one corner first, by 200 level you might find a better one.” she admonished.
“Okay”
“Anyway, there's one girl in 200 level, she met me one day and asked if I was looking for a roommate. That was the day after I moved in to where I'm staying now, I told her to give me her number instead. It seems now that the number would be of better use to you, call her then ask to see how the hostel is and know the sleeping arrangements. Personally shaa, I think having a roommate would be nice considering your pocket, you can share the expenses.”
“Okay, give me her number. I'll call her when I get home.”
She brought out her phone. I saw that she had changed her Techno and now used iPhone. Her parents must be that rich to afford her such expensive phone with all the billing associated with the University. She was lucky to be coming from such background.
I remembered when we used to live in comfort too, before we lost our dad and had to come to Lagos. The pain and memories must have been too traumatic for my mom to bear that she needed a change of environment. It was a brother in church that found a job opportunity for her here, which led to our moving.
She took my phone and typed them in.
“This is an Oppo brand right?” she asked, referring to my phone.
“Yes, A56.”
“Wow, I like the phone.”
“Ówuya! You that is using iPhone, abeg change topic.” I said.
“My sister forget that thing. There's really nothing in using iPhone, but those that don't have it won't know. It's just the pride and flashiness with using it, nothing more. And it can do some things other phones won't but it's not that special.”
“Ehh, lemme use it first and conclude myself.”
She chuckled, “No wahala, maybe when I see another phone I like, I'll give you this one.”
We arrived at the gate within a short time compared to when I trekked alone. The distance between the lecture buildings and the gate of Unilag was another journey, for people who walked alone.
“Do you want to see my room?” she asked.
I had an idea that her hostel was located just across the school gate, but I did not know the one in particular.
I thought about it for a second and decided to do that another time, I really had to go home and eat before I fainted.
“Maybe tomorrow.” I told her.
“Okay now, let me go and enjoy my cornflakes alone since you won't join me.”
“Hahaha, no wahala. Bye bye.”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow.”
‘The University is a world of it's own, a different one from what you're used to.’
As I walked to the bus stop, I remembered one of my teachers statement in secondary school. This journey was really one you were sorely going to take alone even if you have a hundred friends, you are still on your own and the future was going to tell the truth of what you used your time to do while here.

Nnenna has really admonished us here. The University is the more you look, the less you see. If you barge into it without your own purpose, you follow others to achieve their own purpose.
