Nnenna's POV

Unlike how most people react to their first day in the higher institution, it wasn't same for me. I was so excited and elated when I found out that I had gained admission into University of Lagos, AKA Unilag, to study Medical Laboratory science. It was officially added as one of the best days of my life.

Only to be told today by my mom that I wouldn't be attending the main campus located at University Road, Akoka. Instead, I'd be going to the one here in Surulere. The college of medicine. I was happy that at least I got accepted into the medical field, a lot of people don't get that.

"Do you have a pen?" I heard mom from the living room.

I nodded and waved the purple pen at her.

"And your books? You should have at least two?"

"Mom!" I wailed in despair, "I'll just buy two once we arrive at the school gate."

She nodded in disapproval, "No, what if you don't have time for that. Buy them here so once you're there, you'll concentrate while in class."

She threw a five-hundred naira note on the couch I kept my bag.

"Go to Mama Temi's shop and buy two carton-cover notebooks."

"Okay Ma," I immediately took the money and headed out.

When I walked, I walked with pride, I was no longer the Jambite waiting on admission. I was a bonafide student of the University of Lagos, College of medicine campus. I took out my phone from the pocket of my black jeans and took a couple of selfies as I walked. Yes, mother finally let go of her hold on the phone and let me have it after my JAMB results and WASSCE results were out. Thankfully, I aced my results. Now I have earned exclusive rights to the phone.

I have only spoken to few of my classmates back in secondary school mostly on Facebook and WhatsApp. I stumbled upon David's Facebook page a while back but scrolled further. I did not feel ready to talk to him though I knew it was childish of me to keep avoiding him.

After I took my time to look through and select the notebooks of my choice, I quickly made my way back home. The time right now said 10:25 am which would not tell good of me as a student if I entered the lecture block late.

I've been to the college of medicine campus twice but today was my first time going there as a fresher in the school. I've been to the main campus only once with my mom. When I set my eyes on the school gate, it was love at first sight. I literally loved the setting and environment of the school. The buildings, sculptures, trees and signposts really grasped my attention. I began to imagine myself walking down the roads and sidewalks, even through the gardens of the school grounds.

However, the reality that has slapped me in the face was that I wouldn't actually be walking on the main campus school grounds but on another campus ground. Though, I don't mind. School is school as long as I was concerned.

After mom dropped me off by the lecture C block, in a taxi, she waved goodbye and left. I sighed softly in relieve before walking into the hall.

The hall was rowdy, noisy and crowded when I walked in. I refused to look up towards the board because I was scared of meeting gazes with any lecturer, therefore, I walked to the nearest empty space on the long bench located by the door and made myself comfortable. After I pulled my backbag on the desk, I decided to look at the people around me.

As I thought, some of them were staring at me weirdly. A lot of them had questions in their eyes and I'm sure they could tell that I was new at the school. I waved and mumbled a shy 'hello' to some of them. Some smiled and said 'hello' in return, others simply turned their faces away like they didn't realize I spoke to them. Perhaps, they didn't.

For five minutes since I waited in the class, I was yet to see any lecturer walk in. I turned to the girl beside me-who was nodding to the music playing from her headphones and scribbling some words in a notebook.
I tapped her hand and looked up at me.

Her brows quirked quizzically at me then she pulled down the gadget.

"Hi," she said.

"Hi, has there been any lecturer here since morning?" I asked.

"I came late to class, so I only met the last lecturer that taught one hour ago. Although, a friend of mine told me that they had another lecture by eight, Mat 101," she replied.

"Oh! Okay, can I get your note?"

"Which of them?" she said.

"Any one that's up-to-date, I just gained admission recently so..." I trailed off and let her figure the rest out herself.

"Okay. See, it's only my Bio 101 note that's up-to-date and I think Gen 101 because those ones rarely come for lectures but I'm updating the others."

"Please, can you give me the Bio and Gen notes so I can start writing?"

"Alright," she immediately agreed and fished through her yellow bag to bring out a big notebook.

"Thank you," I received the notebook with gratitude and said, "by the way, I'm Nnenna."

"Lena?" she said.

I wasn't sure she was saying her name because of the way she said it, so I asked again to be certain.

"You said?"

"Did you say your name is Lena?" she repeated the question.

"No! Nnenna...Nne...nna," I drawled the word hoping she'd catch on.

"Okay, sorry I haven't really heard that name but my name is Jadesola Adunni Akintoye. Sorry for giving you that long a name but that's how I love to introduce myself." she chuckled and I couldn't help but like her laugh.

"No problem," I told her before I concentrated on catching up on my notes.

By two pm that day, the hall didn't look as rowdy any more. A lot of people simply dispersed for one reason or the other and when Adunni stood up to do the same, I had the courage to ask if she was headed home.

"Ehen naa, like this now no other lecturer is ready to come into this hall again today. Except student-tutors or holier-than-thou lecturers that want to fulfill all righteousness. No lecturer will take this level seriously until after matriculation, besides, admission into this university is still ongoing. No serious lecture will happen till after matric, these ones are just formula milk," she laughed at her own statement but I didn't find anything funny with what she said.

I was more curious to know if lecture has truly ended for the day.

"Okay then, bye bye," I said to her and maintained my position on the bench.

Two minutes after she left, I didn't know if I should do the same. Asides the Bio 101 class I joined in today, there hasn't been any other lecturer in the hall. I waited though until I saw another girl seated on our bench making her move.

"Are you going?" I asked.

"Yes, lectures have ended for the day. Don't you have timetable?"

I nodded no. Thank goodness she reminded me.

"I'm going now so I can't wait for you to write it down, if you have a smart phone you can snap," she offered.

I don't know how I totally forgot that I owned a smart phone that would make things easier for me. I fished it out from my bag and took shots of her timetable.

"I'm Maryjane and I'm in Department of Dental science, you?"

"Nnenna, Basic Medical laboratory science."

"Nnenna, Igbo right?"

"Yes," I smiled that at least someone didn't get my name wrong the first time.

"That's my cousin's name. They stay in Anambra State."

I didn't say anything to that. I simply took further shots of her notes and passed her book back to her. She asked if I wanted to go too and I obliged. Since lectures were done for the day, I didn't want to keep wasting my time doing nothing.

I gathered my things and we started leaving the school compound.

The college of medicine campus wasn't as large as the main campus but it was beautiful and a very conducive learning environment.

By the time I got home, I was beyond fulfilled. Finally, I've had a taste of what it was like to be in the university. Nobody was taking this joy away. I spent the night going over the notes I took shots of and arranging my outfit for the next day in school.

Whew! And that was Nnenna's first day in the university.
