8 - 'Democracy'

{Y/N'S POV}

This was it. The day where the future of my system is decided to be destroyed or saved. I'm just hoping there are some people in the Senate who have at least some sense to see that Sarin's plan for Solaris can only lead to more pain and suffering.

I sit on my bed, Ahsoka on the opposite side of the room floating a sphere in her hand.

"It sucks you can't get into the Senate for the movement, (y/n)."

I nod, sighing. "I may be the Princess, but it's infuriating how I don't get a say on something which could hurt my planet and my people. It's killing me."

I play with the end of my braid as I watch Ahsoka bring the sphere back into her hand, standing up. My eyes follow her as she walks over to my door. I silently asked her to stay, not wanting to be alone.

"Excuse me, I have to go... meet someone. See you later, (y/n)."

{AHSOKA'S POV}

I had to do something. (y/n)'s planet is in danger and she can't even be there to see what happens to it. It's bad enough she doesn't get a say on it. She's like my best friend, I have to help her. I leave her alone in her room and walk through the Temple, hoping to my find my Master wandering around somewhere. I pass the training room, the library and finally find him in the droid repair depot. I walk into the room, and stand in the doorway.

"Master, I need your help."

Anakin turns to me along with R2, and folds his arms, "What have you done now, Snips?"

"Nothing! It's about (y/n)."

Anakin's eyes suddenly widen and he seemed to be a little more interested. "What do you mean?"

"She's miserable, Skyguy. We have to do something to help her. The Senate is about to start the processions of her planet's case, and she can't even be there to witness it. Please, Master, we have to do something," I plead to him. I could sense Anakin's mind search for an answer.

"There's nothing I'd love more Snips, but you know I have to keep her here in the Temple. Obi-Wan would kill me."

"When has that ever stopped you? Come on, where's my Master who follows his own rules?"

Anakin's mouth curls into a smirk and his eyes gleam mischievously, "Good point, my Padawan. Why don't we go and take the Princess for a little... Jedi trip?"

I smirk back at him; there's my Skyguy.

{Y/N'S POV}

I sat alone in my room, playing with the hilt of my lightsaber as I thought about my people back on Solaris, worrying that their fate would become like the ones of my mother and brother. I couldn't take another heartbreak like that again. I walked over to the secret compartment in my wall and pressed the button to open it. I reached into it and pulled out the heap of black material I had stuffed in there. Anakin's robe. I walked back over to my bed and wrapped it around me for comfort, burying my face in it, his scent lingering on the material. I was going to give it back, I was just.... borrowing it.

I panic as I hear someone arrive at the door of my room. As the door slides open, I quickly stash the robe under my bed, my heart racing as Ahsoka enters the room, with Anakin behind her. I stare at them, confused. Anakin locks eyes with me and a smile creeps onto his face.

"Fancy a trip to the Senate, Princess? For, Jedi business?"

My eyes widen and I look at Ahsoka, who was smiling at me excitedly. I nod aggressively and jump up off my bed, grabbing my robe off of my chair and walking out of the room with Anakin and Ahsoka.

"Put your hood up, Princess. We don't need anyone recognizing you and reporting it to the Council, your Senator or even worse, the assassin. Understood?" Anakin instructed. I nodded and did as I was told, pulling the hood over my eyes so my face wouldn't be able to be identified.

We take a ship to the Senate building, and sneak over to where the Senators were gathering. Anakin takes us up to one of the highest entrances, so not many people could see us. I walk through the door and onto a little pod like thing, asking Anakin and Ahsoka to stay outside. The Senate itself was huge: hundreds, possibly thousands of these little pods arranged in a circle around the Chancellor. I step out onto the pod but notice two other people already sat there.

One of them turned to look at me. She was a Mirialan, I could tell from her green skin and black patterns on her face. She looked at me with kind eyes, "Come, we have room for another."

I bowed to her and walked over to the spare seat next to the other girl, who I identified to be a Pantoran. She smiled at me also and turned to face the Senate.

"Welcome, Senators and esteemed members and allies of the Republic. Today, Senator Nios Sarin from Solaris takes the floor to plead his case regarding the future of the protection and warfare within his system," Chancellor Palpatine announced to the Senate, which erupted in applause as he spoke. I scoffed, Sarin's system? He has no right to have authority over a monarch, yet here we are.

My eyes narrowed as Sarin's pod flew out into the centre of the circle, before the the Chancellor. I rest my chin on my fist, watching intently. I notice the Mirialan and Pantoran girls next to me lean together to talk. I shake my head and watch as Sarin's microphone is turned on.

"I, the Senator of the Solaris system, humbly stand before you today to plead for Republic intervention for our planet. Solaris has always been a peaceful, and tranquil place, where others often sought refuge from the war. Now, we can sadly not even keep ourselves safe. Attacks on our people and our government have become more and more frequent, and we have nothing to defend and help our people. Coming up to a year ago now, our system suffered an attack so horrendous, that it claimed the lives of our Queen Rokka and Prince Ayzel, and now, the pain has returned to claim our last remaining ruler, Princess (y/n) Anara, who could not be here today for the sake of her own protection. We beg you to help us before our planet is destroyed. If you will not help us, help our Princess. Please." Sarin announced to the Senate, faking emotion in his voice, causing different reactions within each of the pods.

How dare he. How dare he use Ayzel and my mother to promote his heartless cause. How dare he use me! This is all part of his sick scheme to bring the war to Solaris and more power to himself.

I watch as the two girls next to me react to his words. The Pantoran girl places her head in her hands as the Mirialan girl shakes her head at the Senate as they applaud Sarin.

"Solaris has always remained a peaceful planet, strongly against war, like Mandalore. How can people even possibly start to consider this when Duchess Satine was here but months ago with the same case," the Mirialan girl says, as the Pantoran girl agrees.

"I don't understand why the Princess is not doing anything to stop this," the Pantoran agrees.

I lose it and pull down my hood to face them.

"Maybe it's because she's being repressed from claiming her power and so Sarin is using her throne to convince others that he is in charge. She would never agree to something like this, I assure you. She has been fighting against this happening for ages," I say, tears forming in my eyes.

"How do you know this? How do you know that the Princess thinks this. Who are you anyways?" the Pantoran questions me. I take in a deep breath, trying to keep my cool. I'm not going to hide, not today.

"Because I'm Princess (y/n)."

The two girls' mouths fall open. The Mirialan girl immediately bows to me, whilst the Pantoran's face fills with regret.

"Our apologies your highness. It's a pleasure to meet you, I'm sorry it had to be in such awful circumstances. I am Haven Vass, I'm a representative from Kashyyyk. This is Esina Windcaster, she's an associate of Senator Chuchi from Pantora. Just know that we are on your side, we don't trust Senator Sarin either," the Mirialan girl Haven says to me, pointing to her Pantoran friend Esina.

"Thank you Senators, I wish I could do something about this, but I'm not supposed to be here. It's killing me, but I'm hoping the other Senators have some sense and will oppose against it."

Haven places a sympathetic hand on my shoulder. "Well, just know that Kashyyyk and Pantora stand with the Princess, my lady."

I smile in gratitude and turn back to the Senate, who all seemed to be voting on their data pads. I look at Haven and Esina, who press the button to go against the plea, giving me a little hope back for my people and my planet. If this is passed, then it won't just be Vis that will be affected, but the whole of Solaris, including our moons. My hands start to shake as I see the data pads disappear across the circle. Haven and Esina place their hands on the both of mine reassuringly, stopping them shaking.

"The votes are in, over 150 Senators from the planets and systems have spoken," the Vice Chancellor Mas Amedda announced to the Senate. I felt Esina and Haven squeeze my hands as the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine looks at the results displayed on his pod.

"With 94% of the Republic Senate voting for Republic Intervention on the Solaris system, I, the Supreme Chancellor pass Senator Sarin's plea. Troops will be sent to protect Solaris immediately. May the Princess live a long and fulfilling life."

No.

It can't be true.

94% voted yes, meaning only 6% voted against it. That's what, like 9 systems?

I watch as the Senate erupts with deadly applause, Sarin looking to them in triumph, even faking wiping a tear from his cheek. I couldn't breathe, my throat ran dry, my head was spinning.

"Your highness..."

"Princess, are you ok?"

"Princess?"

I suddenly stand up, and start walking backwards to the door, stumbling and grabbing onto the edge of the pod, almost falling off of it. Haven and Esina stand up immediately and pull me back onto the centre of the pod, falling in a heap on the floor. The door shoots open behind me and Anakin and Ahsoka rush in, ushering Haven and Esina away from me. Silent tears roll down my cheeks as Anakin holds me securely in his arms. I don't know why, but it soothed me, he made me feel safe again.

"So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause," Ahsoka said disapprovingly as she stared at the Senate. "This is not what I thought 'democracy' was."

Anakin says nothing, and just holds me in his arms on the floor. I don't know how long we stayed there, and I didn't care if Esina and Haven saw us. I was vulnerable, it was my fault my system is going to be in ruins. As people from other pods started to stare, Anakin pulled my hood back over my head to protect my identity.

"How could this happen, I-" I sobbed into Anakin's chest. He wrapped his arms around me tighter.

"I know, Princess. I know."
