40 - Visions
{ANAKIN'S POV}
I awoke to find myself in the same stone corridor of the palace, pacing the stone floor as the dimly lit torches flickered the same oddly tinted yellow light on the walls, my boots making the familiar thunderous noises as I walked. I let out a frustrated sigh, hearing my heartbeat hammer in my chest anxiously as my eyes fell on the oak door at the end of the corridor.
Please, not this dream.
I can't watch her die again.
My feet continued to wander to the end of the corridor, stopping in front of the grand doors leading to what I assumed to miraculously be the Memorial Temple on the other side. Gulping, my shaking hand automatically reached out in front of me and touched the golden handle, feeling it rust and tarnish again like it had done a couple of nights ago.
The same familiar feeling of anxiety grew in the pit of my stomach, my hands trembling uncontrollably in fear of what was going to be on the other side of this wretched door. Taking a deep breath, I opened the door and stared nervously at the room in front of me. Hesitantly, my foot finally took the step inside without my brain ever telling it to move, the feeling of dread only growing in me.
I found myself wandering into the room before me, but I was soon confused, surprised and somewhat relieved on what was on the other side. I had expected to walk into the great hall of the Memorial Temple and be forced by those hooded figures to re-live my beloved Princess' funeral once again... but instead, I was in a rather different room. I hadn't been in this room many times before but I could definitely identify which one it was.
I was still in the palace... but this was the throne room.
Furrowing my eyebrows in confusion, I stepped forward closer to the centre of the room, in which rows and rows of people were gathered and sat in their seats, their gazes intently fixed on what was going on in front of them. The two sides of chairs were separated by an emerald green carpet aisle, going up to the steps where the thrones were usually placed. This set-up felt rather familiar to me, almost as if I had been here before.
But I had been here before, just hidden at the back of the room.
This was a coronation.
Still completely and utterly bewildered on what was going on in front of me, I stood on the green carpet right at the end of the aisle as my eyes suddenly fall on a young woman stood at the opposite end, wearing the most beautiful green ballgown with her back facing her audience.
"(y/n)? Is that you?" I called out to her, my voice booming and causing an echo in the room... but no one seemed to hear me, each of the audience and the woman not even reacting to the noise.
I notice the officiant mumble something to the woman, and place the Anara's family crown on top of her curled hair. The woman lowered her head as he placed the tiara neatly upon it, everyone in the audience suddenly - and rather silently - rising from their seats in respect.
"(y/n)?" I called again, but there was still no response from anyone in the audience. My eyes widened as the woman turned to face her crowd and my jaw dropped as I examined her face, my hands trembling once more.
"I hereby pronounce you Queen Devica Anara, our new Queen of the Solaris system!" the officiator declared as the audience suddenly erupted deafening cheers and thunderous rounds of applause. Devica directed her gaze to the floor, her face showcasing an expression which could be only be described as numbness.
I felt my body finally unfreeze and I began to ran as fast as I could to Devica, who was stood at the end of the green carpet, her head hung as she uncomfortably stood in the green gown that I now realised was the one that (y/n) had worn on her own coronation day. Frantically, I seized Devica's shoulders in my grasp, causing her to look into my eyes.
Her skin was as cold as ice, and a rather greyish and pale colour. All of the life and warmth that I knew Devica possessed seemed to have completely drained from her body. A wave of what felt like sadness washed through me as I stared into her pained brown eyes, tears rolling down her cheeks in despair.
"Devica, what's going on?" I asked her softly, trying to get a word out of her. She said nothing, her facial expression not even changing a bit in response. I shook her shoulders a little to try and stimulate something, but all she did was continue to stare dead in my eyes, the tears still escaping down her cheeks. "Devica, you have to snap out of it! This isn't you... you would hate being Queen with all the dresses and the rules! Force, Anara isn't even your name! It's Lao, remember?" I said desperately, growing distressed at the sight of the person I had unexpectedly grown so fond of since we met a couple of months ago.
I continue to hold her tightly, until her eyes finally moved and lowered from my gaze, her mouth opening slightly and a whisper finally was released... "You ruined our lives."
"W-what?" I stammered, feeling anger along with mixed feelings of confusion and sadness began to bubble inside of me. My hands gripped onto Devica harder because of this, but it looked as though she couldn't feel a thing anyways. I shook her a little more in a desperate attempt to get her to answer me, but it was no use.
I started to panic as the palace surrounding us began to quake violently and crumble to the ground. I looked to Devica one more time, who stared into my eyes with a heart-breaking look in hers before she suddenly disappeared in the smoke. I screamed her name at the top of my lungs, but no matter where I looked, she or anyone else was now nowhere to be seen. I cover my eyes quickly to protect my eyes from the soot, and remained there until the quaking finally stopped.
Once I finally removed my hands from my eyes, I discovered that I was in a completely new location. I was now stood in the centre of a ship landing platform, surrounded by cliffs overflowing with the scalding hot, deep-orange substance which quite obviously was lava. It took me a moment to adjust to my new surroundings, the heat making my hair stick to my forehead a little due to the sweat.
As I turned around, I noticed a ship had landed and a figure was standing on the ramp, his arms propped up on his waist. My hand automatically reached down to my lightsaber on my belt and I held it tightly in my grip, squinting my eyes as I tried to identify who the person was.
"I thought I had trained you better than this Anakin," the person called out to, beginning to walk down the ship's ramp, lightsaber in hand. My eyes widened in confusion as I recognized the smooth and charming voice of the man approaching me.
Obi-Wan.
I gripped onto my lightsaber harder, raising my eyebrow as my Master took his place a few metres in front of me, glowing hot embers of fire drifting through air surrounding us as the lava erupted and crashed beneath us and the platform.
"How could you do this? This isn't what she would've wanted!" Obi-Wan yelled at me, his voice cracking a little from the strain.
What the hell does he mean, 'this isn't what she would've wanted'?
What have I done?!
Obi-Wan sighed, activating his lightsaber and poising himself as though he was ready to fight. Subconsciously, my thumb reached down onto my hilt and from a reflex and force of habit, I activated my own saber. My jaw dropped in panic as the blade shot out from the hilt, but was unexpectedly a colour you would not expect to see a Jedi wielding.
The blade of my lightsaber was no longer the blue I was used to... and instead a deep crimson red.
Obi-Wan shook his head disapprovingly and frowned, tears welling in his tired eyes, "So this is the path you've chosen."
"Wha-" I began, but Obi-Wan interrupted once more as though I had never even spoken.
"You were my brother Anakin! I loved you!" he cried, lunging towards me with his lightsaber. I put mine up against his in self-defence, the blue and red blades crashing together.
I can't fight him.
So I give up.
I retract my lightsaber blade , causing Obi-Wan to impale me with his saber. I could feel nothing apart from my breath growing shorter as Obi-Wan gently lowered me to the floor. I took one last look at him, noticing a singular tear escape from his eyes before he walked away and left me. I stared up at the darkened sky, my eyes fluttering until at last they finally closed.
That was when it all went black.
I woke up with a jolt, sitting bolt upright as I frantically fought against the bedsheets surrounding my body. I could feel my hair drenched and stuck down onto my forehead, my chest heaving as I continued to flail around a little, causing the person laying next to me to wake up in equal distress.
"Anakin? Ani, what's wrong with you?" she whispered frantically, placing a gentle hand on my cheek to calm me. I look deep into her eyes, still in a panic as I continued to pant, desperate to catch my breath. "Oh my god, you're in such a state! Come here, it was just a bad dream."
She shushed me and gently pulled me back down onto the bed, laying my head on the pillow. She edged closer to me and wrapped her arm around me, resting her head gently on the top of my head to try and settle me down. "Shhhh, it's ok. I'm right here, I'm right here."
Once my breath had finally steadied, I strained my head to look up into her kind and reassuring eyes, feeling a sensation of comfort slowly replace the panic and distress I was feeling. "I-I'm sorry for waking you," I whispered in the darkness.
"Don't apologize. I used to have nightmares every night after my mother and Ayzel died... it's ok, Anakin," she whispered back, gently playing with one of the curls near my ear. "What was it about?"
I couldn't possibly tell her the truth; she'd be so worried about me if I did.
"Just um.. I can't even remember. It just wasn't a good one," I muttered, feeling a pang of guilt as I lied to her.
"I'll bet it wasn't a good one! But it's over now, and it was only a dream."
But was it a dream? Was it only a dream... or visions.
I nodded a little, and I felt her kiss my forehead lovingly before sliding back down and repositioning herself so her head was laying on the pillow. I wrapped my arm around her securely, brining me more comfort as she rested her head on my chest. The two of us lay in silence, although wide awake because we definitely weren't going to be falling asleep anytime soon after what just happened.
Thoughts raced around my brain, and certain parts of my dream started to plague me, bringing back that horrible feeling of unease in me.
Devica was Queen, and she told me I had 'ruined our lives'. Not just her life though... but ours. And then Obi-Wan was fighting me, and I can't even explain why I had a red saber in my possession. But it was what he said to me that really felt strange...
'This isn't what she would've wanted.'
I just have this horrible feeling that all of this was somehow linked to the nightmare that I had but a few nights before this one. The one with (y/n) dying and me not being able to save her.
I'll protect her if it is the last thing I ever do.
"Princess?" I whispered, breaking the silence.
"Mhmm?" she replied back sleepily, followed by a small yawn.
"I was just thinking; but seeing as I'll be going back to Coruscant soon, and I don't know when I'll be back... I was wondering that maybe we could move up the wedding so it's sooner rather than later?" I asked, biting my lip in anticipation and worry that she may shoot the idea down.
She shuffled a little in the bed, nestling her head in my neck and placed a sleepy kiss on my jaw. "That sounds good, I'd love that."
I couldn't help myself from smiling after she said that. I quickly returned the kiss on the top of her hair and held her tightly in my arms. "Goodnight, (y/n)," I whispered again, finally calm again at last.
I waited for a reply, but she had already fallen back asleep.
