"From the ashes, we will rise."

Today's the day that they get a new greenie, all the gladers are back to doing their jobs. Shes been able to go back out into the maze after arguing with Jeff and Clint about her safety. She won the argument. As always.
She wore a skin tight leather, textured tank top that had three inch straps and skin tight black jeans. She also put on a Waist to thigh harness. Her hair was up in a pony tail and she braided it up on the sides. She let out a sigh and put her makeup on, it was black all over her eyes and she dragged it down, past her cheek bones and to her cheeks.
She put on her combat boots, grabbed her knife and machete and headed to find Minho so she could speak to him. Once she found him, she sat down next to him.
"Hey shank, what's up?" Minho said to her as he munched on a piece of bacon. She grabbed it from his hands and finished it as he rolled his eyes at the girl.
"You're up early, are you running?" He asked and she nodded her head while she wiped her hands on her jeans, "Yeah, i need to blow of some steam."
"Good. Let's go." He grabbed his back pack and they walked over to the maze doors as they opened slowly. It was loud and the concrete scraping together was like nails on a chalkboard. There was some wind and dust that made her eyes flutter, but she ignored it.
They ran into the maze and he began to scold her for what happened last time, "Next time, don't order me to leave you. Seriously if you die, i die. Got it?"
She chuckled and put her gaze on the floor, all that could be heard was their breaths and their chests heaving up and down, "Yeah, got it."
"You think chucks gonna be alright?" He asked the tanned skinned girl. She furrowed her eyebrows at the question. Sure, he's a thirteen year old kid who klunked his pants three times on the way up here, but shes sure he'll survive.
"Yeah. I'm sure he will." She tried to assure herself. Chuck is just a kid who got thrown into this hell hole, just like the rest of them. But she's grown to have a soft spot for Chuck. If something happened to him, she doesn't know what she'd do. Which is why shes made it her job to protect him.
It was silent for the rest of the run before they stopped to eat food. She was eating her sandwich that Frypan gave her when she asked Minho a question.
"Do you think about what the outside world is like?"
He took a sip of his water before responding, his breathing was now calm, "Yeah. Sometimes. I think that whatever's out there can't be worse than this shuck place. That's for sure." He said and she simply responded with a humorless chuckle and shook her head.
She's noticed that shes the only person that Minho shares these questions with, but she hasn't asked why. She doesn't want to make him feel uncomfortable. That's the last thing she wants, she wants for him to open up to her. She wants for all of them to open up to her, and so far, she's been successful.
After a day of running, they decided to head back since it was getting dark. They met up with Ben half way. The reason why they don't allow her to go alone is because they feel the need to protect her. They decided to come up with a buddy system, every runner needs a partner while they're running in case something happens.
When they entered the glade, she walked to her room to see her new supplies that have arrived for her. When she finished arranging them, they decided to have a proper welcoming for the new greenie.
A bonfire.
Each time they get a new greenie they do a bonfire, it's tradition. The last time they had one was for Chuck but she was going through the changing for the second time, so she didn't get to hang out with the rest of the Gladers.
She heard all of the gladers surrounding the Box because the greenie refused to come out.
What a wimp.
She didn't bother to get past the group of boys, but she knew she would have to get them to calm down some how.
Gally jumped into the box, grabbed the greenie by his shirt and said, "Day one greenie, rise and shine." then proceed to throw him onto the floor. He practically ate grass as the gladers pointed at him and commented jokingly.
"I could use some help in the kitchen!"
"Looks like Klunk in a T-shirt."
"Think he could be a slicer?"
"Hey greenie!"
"Aw! look at him."
"It smells like feet down there."
She had enough, so she shouted at them, causing them all to clamp their mouths shut, "Slim it!"
She made her way to the front and observed the boy that was shaking in front of her. He looked to be about fifteen, same age as her. He had dark brown, almost black hair and he wore a blue shirt that was drenched in sweat. He was looking at the floor, he refused to look up, she noticed he had moles dotted around his cheeks and reached down to his neck. She couldn't help but feel familiar with the boy. She was almost positive she had seen him before.
He froze in fear, she knew what he was about to do, maybe she could get a good laugh. She put her arm out, signaling for the boys to give him space. The greenie stood up and quickly ran away from the rest of the boys that were still laughing, along with the girl, who wore a amused smile on her face.
"We've got a runner!" Zart shouted, causing the shorter girl to thwack him over the back of his head. He mumbled an 'ow' as he rubbed it. She chuckled and threw her arm over his shoulder as he put his arm around her waist in a friendly way. She laid her head on his shoulder.
"You're gonna go get him, right?" Frypan asked. She held up three fingers and let out a sigh as she counted down.
Three.
The boys were still shouting, causing her to roll her eyes.
Two.
The greenie was quickly running, she noticed he was trying to get to the maze doors.
One.
The greenie face planted and rolled over him self as he tripped on air, causing her to let out a loud snort along with the boys. No one makes it that far.
"Put him in the slammer, wait till he calms down. Give em' the tour. Don't tell him too much." The girl ordered Alby. He nodded and grabbed the greenie,
then forcefully dragged him to the pit.
Alby gave the greenie the tour and then told him the rules. "First, do your part. No time for any freeloaders. Second, never harm another glader. None of this works unless we have trust. And Never, go beyond those walls." Alby said. Aife could hear the voice of the two boys. Of course, she wasn't seen by them, but she was still listening.
The rest of the day was somewhat calm. Before the greenie decided to make an idiotic decision.
He slowly inched himself towards the maze walls, Chuck was trying to get him to stop, but it was no use. Gally then showed up and shoved him to the floor, causing him to fly about six feet before landing on his back.
"We've gotta stop meeting like this greenie," Gally huffed as he towered over him, referring to earlier when he retrieved him from the box and threw him on the floor.
"Get off me!" The greenie scrambled to stand up as he yelled back at Gally. She stood up and dropped what she had been doing to make her way over, along with the other gladers to see what all the motion was about.
However, she stayed behind a few steps.
"Woah, calm calm calm, take it easy!" Gally put his hands up in surrender as he tried to calm him down, but it was no use.
"What the hell is wrong with you guys!" The greenie shouted at the boys that began surrounding him. His breathing got heavy as he tried to comprehend any reason of why he wasn't allowed to go through.
"Just calm down, alright?"
"No! Why won't you tell me what's out there." He shouted as he backed away from them.
"We're just tryna protect you man." Alby spoke to him calmly.
"Hey! Shut it! Calm the hell down and stop complaining." Alby shouted from his spot, it was then that she turned around and continued what she was doing. She felt pride swell in her chest for Alby as he had managed to calm the situation.
All the boys immediately stopped shouting at the sound of his authoritative voice that he rarely brought out and turned to the maze doors, that were loudly creaking and scraping together as they closed.
Gally clenched his jaw and got up in the greenies face, "Next time, i'm gonna let you leave." He poked his chest before he stormed off in anger.
She was slightly irritated of the situation at hand, but then again, she was the same way, so she cant blame him from being curious. Only she had to figure everything out the hard way.
A couple of hours went by and she felt herself grow tired, But now it's time for the Bonfire that they had planned.
It was dark out, there was a slight breeze that flowed through the grass at night.
She grabbed her bow and walked over to the group of boys that were surrounding a huge pile of sticks. Minho handed the tanned girl a stick that he had carved for her to make somewhat of an arrow, he set the tip of it on fire and everyone waited for her to launch it into the pile of sticks.
Once she did, cheers erupted and everyone else began to throw their lit stick in the fire she had created. She let out a laugh and shook her head as She and Minho walked over to a log and sat down on it.
They observed everyone as they conversed, laughed, and ate. There were three boys that were playing what they call 'music'. There were banging on a couple of pans, others were dancing and eating.
Aife looked across the fire to see Newt and the new greenie, talking.
"Look at this shank, he thinks he's the best in the glade." Minho snapped and pulled her attention away from the two boys she had been observing, he nodded his head towards Gally, who was fighting some of the other gladers. He had the other boy in a headlock. She looked towards Minho with a smirk before she sat her plate down and walked towards the circle, the boys stepped away to let her get through.
"You wanna give it a go?" He asked the girl and she shrugged. She stepped into the circle and heard cheers coming from all around She and Gally. She gave a smirk and stood in a fighting stance.
"I would tell you good luck but we both know i'm gonna win-" The girl cut him off by landing a punch to his cheek.
Gally gulped and pushed his tongue against his cheek in frustration, the other gladers didn't notice, but she did. He came at her and put his hands on her shoulders as he attempted to push her out of the circle, but she turned her body so he flew foward and got a face full of sand.
His hands clutched the sand as he sat there.
A series of 'oooohs' came from the gladers.
She kicked some sand on him and ordered him, "Get up, shank. You done that easily?" She teased the taller boy.
He huffed and stood up and turned to her. He landed a punch on the girls right cheek, causing her head to fly left. Alby attempted to stop it, but she simply gave an aggressive smile and turned to him.
"Wait- i didn't-"
She cut Gally off by kicking his feet out from under him, he tried to stand up but she landed a punch, grabbed his arm, turned him on his stomach and pinned his arm to his back. He forced himself up, but she pushed him out of the circle, causing him to fall again.
Everyone cheered for the girl as Gally tapped out. She offered him a hand and helped him stand up as he shook it, "Good game."
She nodded and responded, "Yeah. You put up a good fight. I cant wait for the day that i can get a real challenge." Aife joked. He scoffed in disbelief and shook his head
She felt a cut on her lip, but she ignored it. She could barely feel it. There was a metallic taste in her mouth.
She walked back over to Minho who was now talking to chuck, "Good job, Feefee. You've never lost a fight." Minho smiled at the raven headed girl and she gave a tight lipped smile back.
"What can i say."
"That was so cool!" Chuck looked up at the female in awe. She laughed and ruffled his hair.
She noticed Newt and the greenie talking still, it made her slightly curious. She hasn't gotten to properly introduce herself.
He pointed to She and Minho as he spoke to the greenie, he wore a smug grin on his face. She walked over and she heard snippets of their conversation,
"That one next to Minho, thats Aife. She's like a flower, but not a delicate one. Like a bomb." Newt said to the greenie. She rolled her eyes as she sat down next to him.
"Hey," The girl gave a smirk as she ate the rest of the food that Frypan cooked for them.
"Hey, i was just talkin' to the greenie 'bout you." Newt smirked and she rolled her eyes and huffed.
"What'd you say?"
"Just tell in' him about how you've got everyone in the glade wrapped around you're bloody fingers." He joked and she playfully nudged him, causing the greenie to furrow his eyes and chuckle as he observed her.
"You're the only girl? Why?" The greenie said, she looked at him and gave him an 'are you serious' look.
He must of realized how stupid he sounded because his face wore a sheepish expression as he rubbed the back of his neck confusedly and his cheeks flushed red.
"Yeah. I am. I'm not sure why. Maybe my parents did the wrong position or something," Aife shrugged and cocked up an eyebrow at him.
"I- i didn't mean it like that- i just, you're the only one." He stammered and she rolled her eyes as she fought off a smile at his awkwardness, "S'alright. I get it."
She caught his eyes tracing her scar that went up to her neck, but she ignored it. It made her slightly frown at the memories, like as if everyone that eyes it rips off the bandaid. But she just know he's just curious. But one day, that'll get him hurt. She won't let that happen to him. Any of them. However, she couldn't fight the awkward look that rose to her cheeks under his gaze, he must have noticed because he let out an uneasy chuckle.
"She here, is In charge of everything that goes on, respect her, and maybe she'll let you live. We worship her here. She always gets what she wants, even if she has to fight for it." Newt informed while he patted the girls shoulder with a smile.
"Let's dial it down a notch, Newtie." The girl replied with a raised eyebrow as she looked at him incredulously.
Newt gave a chuckle and shrugged, she opened her mouth to speak again. But was cut off when she saw the expression of the greenie.
Then she realized.
The maze was changing. It caught his attention.
"What's out there?" He asked eagerly.
She gave Newt a nod, gesturing her head towards the greenie saying that he could tell him.
Newt let out a sigh before he spoke, "it's a maze." The greenie furrowed his eyebrows and gave the two a look, "A maze?"
"Yup. And trust me, the maze is a dangerous place." Aife said with a sigh, she could tell he got the warning she gave him, seeing as he gulped in nervousness.
They sat in silence, before the greenie spoke, "...we're trapped here, aren't we?" He fidgeted with his hands at his sides as he spoke anxiously.
"For the moment," Newt nodded, "But You see those guys, There by the fire. Those are the runners. That one in the Middle is Minho." Newt pointed to Minho who was scoffing down his food with a cold expression, causing the female to snort quietly.
"Him And Aife here, they're the keeper of the runners. Now, every morning when those doors open, they run the maze, mapping it. Memorizing it, trying to find a way out."
Greenie looked back at the tattooed girl with his eyebrows pinched together, "How long have you been looking?"
She clenched her jaw before she responded to his question, "Three and a half years."
Greenie sat with his mouth agape as he processed this new information, "and they haven't found anything?"
"It's not easier said than done," Newt defended and he held his hand up, motioning for silence, "Listen."
"You here that? That's the maze, changing. It changes every night." She grabbed the moonshine drink from Newt and chugged down a few sips and slightly scrunched her face up at the burning sensation it sent down her throat.
"How is that even possible?" The greenie asked in shock.
"You can ask the people who put us here, if you ever meet the bastards." She spoke bitterly with pure hatred in her voice. Her top lip curled in disgust and she gritted her teeth as she thought of everything they've put them through.
"Listen, the truth is, the runners are the only ones who know what's out there." Newt said, "They're the strongest and fastest of us all and it's a good thing, because if they don't make it back before those doors close, then they're suck out there for the night. And no ones ever survived a night in the maze."
She shut her eyes as she recalled the memories, "No one except for Aife."
"What happens to them?" The greenie asked hesitantly. He eyed the girl in front of him up and down with wide eyes as he proceeded to process the information.
"Well we call em' grievers." Newt spoke for her. He knew she hated talking about them. It brought back horrible memories and each time she though about that night, it was like she was reliving everything that went down.
"Of course, no ones ever, seen one and lived to tell about it. But they're out there."
The greenie looked at her as if he was expecting her to tell her story, but she quickly shoved the drink she stole from Newt into his hands, "Lets not ruin the mood. This is you're night. Let's put some hairs on you're chest."
The greenie hesitantly took a sip before he spat it out in disgust, gagging dramatically, causing she and Newt to chuckle, "What is this stuff?! Oh my god, what is that?"
"I don't even know, it's Gallys secret recipe."
They sat in silence for a little and made small conversation before Gally pushed the greenie into the circle, causing him to fall on his stomach.
"Wanna give it a shot Greenie?"
