A Chance

3rd Person's POV

A young doctor rips a blood pressure cuff off Steve's arm, "You can get dressed."

A nurse enters and whispers to the Doctor, who then eyes Steve.

"Wait here."

Steve stands up and asks nervously, "Am I in trouble?"

"Just wait here."

He and the nurse leave. Steve eyes a poster on his right: "IT IS ILLEGAL TO FALSIFY YOU ENLISTMENT FORM. ONLY TRAITORS LIE TO THEIR COUNTRY."

"I'm in trouble..." Steve mumbles to himself as he starts to scramble for his shoes.

He freezes as the curtain slides open and he sees a towering soldier standing near it.

Dr. Erksine then enters, wearing a lab coat, looking at a file, "So, you want to go overseas, kill some Nazis?"

"Excuse me?"

Dr. Erskine offers his hand, "I'm Doctor Abraham Erskine. I represent the Strategic Scientific Reserve."

Steve shakes his hand his body still shaking in fear.

"Steve Rogers. Where are you from?"

"Queens. 73rd and Utopia Parkway. And before that, Germany. This troubles you?"

Steve considers this, then shrugs.

Dr. Erskine nods then replies, "And where are you from, Mr. Rogers? Is it New Haven, or Paramus, or... Five exams. In five different cities..."

"That might not be the right file."

"It is not the exams I am interested in. It is the five tries." He stands peering at Steve, "You didn't answer my question. You want to kill Nazis?"

"Is this a test?"

"Yes." Dr. Erskine nods with a slight smile.

"I don't like bullies, Doctor. I don't care where they're from."

"There are already plenty of big strapping men in this war. What they need now is maybe the 'little guys,' yeah?"

"Maybe." Steve replies unsure of what is going on. "What do you do, exactly?"

"Let's say I believe there is great potential in every human. It's just a matter of bringing it to the surface."

Erskine lays out Steve's file. He reaches for a stamp as he tells Steve, "I can offer you a chance, only a chance."

"That's all I'm asking for." Steve says with excitement.

Dr. Erskine hands him the form with a 1A stamped on the top, "So, really, where is the little guy from?"

"New York City... Brooklyn."

"Hmm well that is that. You are to report to this address tomorrow. There we will travel to Camp Lehigh, and you along with ten other recruits will get the chance to be chosen for the newest greatest experiment there will ever be."

"Wow thank you so much Dr. Erskine."

Erskine nods and hands Steve the paper with the address then turns to leave.

Stopping at the curtain he remembers something and turns around, "Oh and also my personal assistant and best scientist will be traveling with us. She will stay by your side and study you. Don't be alarmed she is very nice... most of the time."

Erskine smiles at Steve's frightened face and finally leaves the curtained room. Steve shakes his head and looks down at his from smiling at the 1A stamp.

I did it.
............................................................................................................................................................................

Standing in front of a small house, Steve holds his luggage and wonders why Erskine had given him this address. The front door to the small house opens revealing Dr. Erskine lugging his suitcases out the door. Steve goes to help him until a familiar voice makes him freeze.

"Really Abe you have more bags than I do."

Sammie Todd. The beautiful dame he had met yesterday was standing right here... right infront of him.

"Let me live Sammie Todd." Dr. Erskine says while pulling the bags to the cab.

"Fine." Sammie raises her hands up in surrender.

In the corner of her eye she sees a figure standing by the fence. Looking over, she notices Steve Rogers, James Buchanan Barnes best friends, Dr. Erskine's first choice for the experiment.

"Hi Steve! How are you? I'm so proud of you!"

Steve smiles slightly then freezes up again as he is pulled into a hug by Sammie.

"T-thanks S-Sam..."

While nodding she hooked her arm through his, and pulled him over to the cab.

Finally after what feels like hours, the three get their bags into the cab and are on the way to their destination. Dr. Erskine sits in the front with the driver leaving Sammie and Steve to the back. Steve looks out the window hoping this ride won't be awkward. He actually would like to get to know Sammie and not screw things up entirely.

"So Steve..."

Steve looks over at a gleaming Sammie and replies, "Yes S-Sam?"

"How old are you? You don't look a day over 20." Sammie giggles to herself making Steve's face tinge pink.

"U-um I'm 27."

"Wow really? That's crazy."

Steve nods, "You?"

"26." Sammie smiles at Steve's sudden shocked face.

Steve stares at the beauty beside him and thinks, How is she 26? She looks 18. She looks so out of my league.

"Wow w-well you l-look beautiful." Steve's cheeks warm up.

"Aw thank you Steve. I haven't heard that in a while."

"You s-should he-hear it everyday."

Sammie looks down at her hand then back at Steve, "Wouldn't that be great."

Erskine glances behind him and smiles at the young boy and girl.

Sammie glances out the window making Steve think of something and frown, "Sam?"

"Yes?"

"Why are you here?"

Sammie bursts out laughing as Steve's eyes widden at the way he just asked the question.

"I m-mean-"

"I understand Steve." She sobers up and pats his shoulder. "I'm working with Dr. Erskine... kind of taking over for my dad. He used to be Erskine's partner and second best scientist back then."

"Used to..." Steve frowns at Sammie as she glances down smiling sadly.

"Yeah... he died in a train wreck 7 years ago. Growing up, I would always go to work with him and see how he worked as a scientist. I wanted to be just like him. I went to college and was top of all my classes. I interned and started to work with him and Erskine."

Steve opens his mouth to ask another question but the cab driver beats him to it.

"What about your mom?" The driver glances through the rear view mirror with sad eyes.

"She died during childbirth.... She gave birth to me, held me for two minutes then died right there on the bed. She had a good bit of complications. Everyone wasΒ  just happy that one of us was alive. So Erskine took me in... he helped me continue with science, made me his assistant, and feeds me every Tuesday and Thursday." Sammie smiles looking up at Erskine who glances back at her.

"Wow I'm sorry." Steve says.

"Don't be."

"If it makes it any better. My father died from mustard gas during war and my ma was a nurse who got hit and couldn't recover."

"That actually does not make me feel better Steve. That makes me sad for you but thank you for trying." She smiles sadly at Steve.

Steve nods and looks back out the window. He feels a hand grab his. Glancing down, he sees Sammie's hand holding his, looking up he sees her smiling face and smiles back at her.

Steve knows that he could make her happy. He could make her smile and laugh. He could be the guy for her. And she could be the gal for him. The one that he would finally dance with.

All he needs is a chance.
